Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Jay-Be Simply Kids Waterproof Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

In the showroom, the Jay-Be Simply Kids Waterproof Mattress felt immediately practical: wipe-clean, slim and clearly built for accident-prone years rather than luxury comfort. As an average-weight back sleeper, I could tell from pressing and sitting on it that the medium-firm feel comes in quickly, but the open coil unit feels basic and not especially precise. I liked the foam-free fibres, recycled E-Fibre detail, hypoallergenic and anti-microbial claims, though the waterproof surface has a slightly clinical feel and I’d still use a sheet and protector. For younger children, bunks or grandparents’ beds, it makes sense as a short-term clean-up-first mattress, but I wouldn’t treat it as a long-lasting everyday upgrade.

What our sleep experts found

The Jay-Be Simply Kids Waterproof Mattress left me with a fairly blunt impression in store: it solves a messy, practical problem, then asks you not to look too closely at the comfort spec. For children who still have accidents, spill drinks or climb into bed with sticky hands, the wipe-clean surface is useful. Very useful, in fact. That is the reason this mattress exists.

I assessed it in person by checking the cover, pressing through the comfort layers, sitting on the edge and looking over the finish. I did not do a full adult lie-down test, because this is a kids’ mattress and my weight would distort the result. The shop-floor feel still told me enough. This is a budget sprung mattress with a waterproof skin, not a premium children’s sleep product in disguise.

Waterproof build and everyday upkeep

The waterproof cover is the part I liked most. It feels wipeable and practical, so a nighttime accident should not turn into a ruined mattress. Parents dealing with toilet training will understand the appeal straight away. A separate protector on a normal mattress can work, of course, although leaks and laundry are still part of the routine.

The surface has a slightly medical feel under the hand. A fitted sheet is essential, and I would still be tempted to add a thin washable protector because repeated scrubbing can age waterproof finishes. That is one thing a showroom visit cannot prove: how the cover looks after a year of cleaning products, warm bedrooms and small children being small children.

At 18cm deep, it is easy to see where the cost has been kept down. The slim profile may suit bunks, trundles and cabin beds where guard rail height matters. It also means there is not much mattress here to absorb wear. Care is simple because it is single-sided, so you rotate it rather than flip it. The 5-year guarantee gives some reassurance, and the National Bed Federation approval is a better sign than vague sales claims.

Comfort and spring feel

The stated medium to firm feel seemed about right from my hands-on check. The Soft White Fibres give a little padding at the surface, then the support arrives quickly. For a light child, that may be enough. For an older child who is heavier or already fussy about comfort, I would be careful.

The support system is Traditional Open Coil Springs, and this is where the mattress feels basic. Open coil units tend to move as a wider panel, so the support is less precise than you get from pocket springs. Pressing across the surface, I could feel that broad, connected response. Acceptable for a young child, maybe for a spare bed. I would not choose it for a child with regular aches or very restless sleep.

Jay-Be makes a lot of the foam-free construction, hypoallergenic materials, anti-bacterial treatment and anti-microbial treatment. Some of that sounds reassuring, but I would not overread it. Foam-free simply means the filling choice is different. The mattress still needs to feel supportive night after night, and that is the part I found average. The BS7177:2008 fire resistance rating for domestic use is a concrete safety point, so I give that more weight than the softer wellness language.

Who I think it suits

This mattress makes most sense for younger children in the accident-prone years, for grandparents’ houses, or for a bed where clean-up speed matters more than refinement. It is rolled for delivery, so getting it upstairs should be straightforward, and Jay-Be also uses 100% recycled packaging. The E-Fibre layer made from recycled plastic bottles is a nice detail, though it does not make the mattress feel expensive.

The breathable fibres and moisture-wicking claim are harder to judge in a showroom. I could not tell how cool it would stay during a warm night, especially with a waterproof surface involved. That combination always makes me cautious, because waterproofing and airflow rarely feel like natural partners.

I would compare it with the Silentnight Healthy Growth range before buying. Silentnight usually feels more like a proper everyday children’s mattress in store, while this Jay-Be is better aimed at homes where accidents are the main concern. Different job. Different buyer.

Final take

I would buy the Jay-Be Simply Kids Waterproof Mattress as a short-term, practical solution for a younger child. The UK-made build, rolled format, high density eco-insulator and simple care routine all help its case, but the 18cm depth and open coil spring unit keep my expectations firmly in budget territory. Once dryness is reliable, I would move to a better sprung children’s mattress.
