Why our sleep experts loved it
The Highgrove Solar Supreme is a very typical British, value-led, open coil mattress that tries to feel a bit smarter than its price suggests. I have not had the chance to test it in person or in my own home, this review is based on the published specifications, brand experience, and the small amount of customer feedback available. And because Archers is up in Scotland, I also did not get to pop into store and lie on it for ten minutes like I normally would when I can.
Design and features
You are looking at an open coil spring system with hourglass shaped springs linked together. That usually means decent all round stability, but not the precise body contouring you would get from pocket springs. The micro quilted stretch knit cover is a genuinely nice touch. It tends to feel smoother against bedding, and quilting can help the surface feel less flat and a bit more cushioned. I also like that it is double sided. At this sort of price point, a lot of mattresses are single sided and basically disposable. Being able to rotate and flip it properly can make a real difference to how quickly it dips.
The rod edge support is fine, not magic. Wired edges do help reduce that saggy border feeling, especially on open coil builds, so if you sit on the side to put socks on it should cope better than models without reinforcement. But it is still not the same as a high density foam encasement you might get on more premium hybrids. You will get usable edge space, just do not expect it to feel totally rigid.
Mattress comfort
This is pitched right in the medium firm pocket, and on paper that is the sweet spot for a lot of UK sleepers. The feel should be supportive with a modest amount of surface give, rather than a plush sink in sensation. The quilted finish and the mention of Tencel fibres suggest a slightly more breathable and refined surface than the bare basics, and that is a pleasant surprise. But the fillings being described in the usual white fibre territory does make me roll my eyes a bit. Those fibres can feel comfy at first, then compress and matt down, and that is where the early body impressions come from on budget open coil mattresses.
Suitability
For average weight back sleepers, I actually think this tension makes a lot of sense. You should get a flatter, more held up posture through the lumbar area, and the open coil unit generally keeps things feeling level. Side sleepers of average weight will likely be fine too, especially if you like a steadier feel and do not need loads of shoulder sink. But if you have a pronounced hourglass shape, or you are a pure side sleeper who needs pressure relief at the shoulder and hip, this might feel a touch pushy. In that case I would normally steer you to a slightly softer tension or a pocket sprung option with a plusher comfort layer.
It is also worth being realistic about motion transfer. Linked springs tend to pass movement across the surface more than pocket springs. So couples who are light sleepers may notice partner movement, even if the surface feels comfortable.
The verdict
I like the intent here. A medium firm, double sided mattress with a decent looking quilted cover and edge support usually represents honest value. The one real customer comment we have is positive on comfort and delivery, and that lines up with what I would expect from a straightforward build that does not try to be clever.
But I am not going to pretend it is something it is not. Open coil and fibre heavy comfort layers are not my favourite recipe for long term shape retention. The guarantee is reassuring, but personally I am dubious this will feel truly fresh at the five year mark in a main bedroom if it is used every night. If you want a simple, supportive, medium firm feel and you will actually flip it regularly, it could be a good buy. If you want contouring, quiet partner isolation, and a mattress that stays crisp for years, I would spend more on a pocket sprung model.
