Why our sleep experts loved it
I got my hands on the Classic Gold Ortho Mattress in person and the first thing I noticed was how traditional it feels, in a good way. It’s a handcrafted mattress that offers you a medium to firm tension and orthopaedic support throughout, no matter which side you choose.
The materials used to make the Classic Gold Ortho Mattress are high quality and have been carefully selected to ensure that they are strong, fire resistant and durable but also provide support and comfort. Running my hand across the knitted cover, it felt hard-wearing rather than plush, so don’t expect that thick hotel-style squish on first contact.
Inside, the mattress has an open coil spring system combined with soft white fibres that provide support and comfort. When I pressed down with my palm and then lay on it, you can feel the whole spring unit respond together, which is what open coil does, it’s supportive but it doesn’t have that ‘individual spring’ feel you get from pocket springs. On my back it kept my hips nicely up and level, but on my side I could feel a bit of pressure building around the shoulder, so lighter side sleepers will probably find this a touch too firm. Motion isolation is also not its strong point, if you’re sharing, you’re more likely to notice your partner moving compared to a pocket sprung mattress.
We recommend The Classic Gold Orthopaedic Mattress for those looking for proper orthopaedic support in their mattress. For me personally it’s a solid, no-nonsense option if you want firmer support on a budget, but if you’re after a softer top, better edge support when sat on the side, or less movement transfer, I’d be looking at a pocket sprung alternative at a similar price.
