The Bensons Ortho Pocket 1000 Mattress gave me a fairly clear impression in the showroom: sensible bones, ordinary comfort layers, and a price that needs watching carefully. I can see why someone would shortlist it. I can also see why I would hesitate before paying anywhere near full ticket.
My interest here starts with the support unit. A 1000 pocket spring mattress is automatically preferable to a basic open-coil option in my book, because the support can move in smaller sections under the body. Even so, 1000 springs now sits at the minimum end of the pocket-sprung market. It does the job. It does not make the mattress feel especially advanced.
What Bensons has built here
Bensons has not made much noise about the fillings, and after handling the mattress I can understand why. The top felt like soft fibre padding, with no obvious premium comfort material making itself known. Budget, in feel. The surface had enough cushioning to take the edge off the firm support underneath, but I would not buy this expecting a deep, layered finish.
The shop-floor model looked neat enough. No loose stitching jumped out on the one I tested, and the mattress had the plain, practical look you tend to get from an entry-level orthopaedic model. I do not mind that in principle. A mattress can be visually dull and still sleep well. The concern is longevity, because fibre comfort layers can flatten with use, and a showroom lie-down cannot show how quickly that will happen.
Value is the sticking point. Under £500 for a king size, with the smaller sizes coming down accordingly, this starts to make more sense. Above that, I would be comparing it hard with a Sleepeezee Backcare Ultimate 2000 or a discounted Silentnight pocket-sprung mattress, both of which often feel like stronger buys in this part of the market.
How firm it felt in person
The firm tension was firmer than I expected. On my back, my hips stayed level and the mattress gave a properly supported feel through the middle of the body. It did not have the dead, plank-like quality some cheap firm mattresses suffer from, so credit where due. There was a small amount of contouring at the surface, enough to stop it feeling brutally hard during the test.
Side sleeping was much less convincing. My shoulder met resistance quite quickly, and my hip did not sink in as much as I would want for a full night. A few minutes in a showroom will not replicate six hours in one position, but pressure usually announces itself early, and this mattress gave enough warning signs for me.
I did not feel hot while testing it, though I would treat that as a limited observation. A store is cooler and more controlled than a real bedroom, and there is no strong cooling feature here that I would put money on during a warm August night. No mystery solved there.
Best sleeper match
Back sleepers are the natural audience. The support feels direct, and anyone who dislikes a mattress swallowing them may prefer this more traditional response. Some stomach sleepers could also get on with it, since the firmness should help keep the pelvis from dipping too far.
Side sleepers need to be careful, especially those with an hourglass shape. The hip and shoulder need more room to settle than this mattress seemed willing to give. Lighter side sleepers may have the hardest time, because they will not compress the spring unit enough to find much relief at the top.
Couples get the basic benefit of a pocket-sprung construction, so movement should be better controlled than on a continuous-coil mattress. I could not test partner disturbance properly in store. Turning over on a display bed tells you very little about being woken at 2am by someone restless.
My buying call
I would only put the Bensons Ortho Pocket 1000 Mattress on a shortlist for a back sleeper wanting a firm, traditional mattress at a sharp sale price. The support layer earns a tick, but the vague filling story keeps it from feeling like a clever buy at higher money. My cut-off would be simple: a king below £500, or I would keep walking round the showroom.
