What our reviewers found

Pros

  • Two layers of pocket springs do the support.
  • A fibre comfort top that's softer than the plain e-Pocket's.
  • A 3D spacer border lets air through the sides.
  • Owners whose mattress fitted say children find it comfortable straight away.

Cons

  • The name says memory, but there's no memory foam in it.
  • Owners report it measuring short of a single frame.
  • One owner describes soft corners and a thin feel.
  • At 22cm it won't suit most top bunks.

There's no memory foam in the Jay-Be Dual Support Memory e-Pocket Mattress. Memory e-Fibre is a fibre comfort layer, and the build underneath is the same two layers of pocket springs as the plain e-Pocket. That makes it a decent children's mattress with a softer top, and the owner reviews raise the same length problem as its sibling. Skip it if you were paying extra for memory foam.

Memory e-Fibre is fibre, and it sits on pocket springs

Under the knitted cover sits Jay-Be's Memory e-Fibre comfort layer, then more fibre, then a layer of micro e-Pocket springs over a deep e-Pocket core. The listing says the mattress is completely foam free, so the "memory" describes how the fibre is meant to respond to pressure rather than the slow-sinking foam the word usually means. At 22cm it's the deepest of the Dual Support models.

For your child, a quick-responding fibre top is better than memory foam would be. Children move a lot in their sleep, and foam that holds a shape slows a restless sleeper down and runs warm. The pocket springs underneath do the supporting, each one moving on its own.

A softer top for a single bed, never a bunk

Buy it if your child likes a softer top than the plain e-Pocket gives, for a single frame you've measured. Avoid it for your top bunk. At 22cm it's too deep for most of them, where the mattress has to sit below the maximum line marked on the bed. It's one-sided, so rotate it rather than turning it.

The happy owners and the unhappy ones describe different mattresses

Owners who are happy are very happy: children who find it comfortable from the first night, and one parent who liked it enough to buy a second for another child. The unhappy owners report the same thing as each other. The mattress measured short of the frame once unpacked, and one says the replacement was short too. Another describes soft corners and a thin, uneven feel.

The length is the complaint I'd act on, because a gap at the foot of your child's bed is a safety problem as well as an annoyance. Measure yours the day it expands. If there's a gap, send it back.

What to buy instead

If a softer top is the attraction, the Dual Support Natural e-Pocket uses wool and bamboo over the same springs, and natural fibres sleep cooler. If you just want the springs, the plain Dual Support e-Pocket is the simpler buy. Have a tape measure ready for either when it arrives.

Suitability

  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Odour

  • Initial Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

Although the mattress arrived promptly, the product itself was a huge disappointment. It measured 10cm shorter than stated on the Bensons for Beds website (180cm instead of 190cm), which meant the end of my child's ottoman bed was completely visible. The corners were very soft, and overall the mattress felt as though it was missing a lot of filling, giving it a thin, uneven feel. Bensons did send a replacement, but unfortunately it was identical to the first one - still too short and poorly made. I eventually decided to return it, but the returns process was slow and frustrating, with conflicting information from different members of the customer service team. Overall, I would not recommend this mattress at all. If Bensons intend to keep selling it, they should at the very least update the website to reflect the correct dimensions and improve the product quality.

I only gave this a one star as couldn't choose no stars. This mattress is not 190cm long so there is a dangerous gap at the end that my child could put her foot down between the slats of the bed. Benson's do not care about this and will not acknowledge this as a fault. Replacement is the same. Do not order this mattress.

My son loves his new mattress. Usually a mattress needs to soften over time . However this mattress is super comfy from the first moment. Bought the same one for my daughter last year. Would highly recommend.

Questions and answers about the Jay-Be Dual Support Memory E-Pocket Mattress

Common questions answered by our team first, then questions shoppers asked the retailer, with the retailer’s own answers.

Image of the post author
Common question
Does the Dual Support Memory e-Pocket contain memory foam?

Answer: No. The listing describes the whole Dual Support range as foam free. Memory e-Fibre is Jay-Be's name for a fibre comfort layer designed to respond quickly under pressure. For a child that's no loss, because fibre stays cooler than memory foam and doesn't hold a restless sleeper in one position. The support comes from two layers of pocket springs underneath.

Common question
What should I do if the mattress is shorter than the bed?

Answer: Return it. Owners report this model measuring short of the frame after unpacking. Give it time to expand fully, then measure it on the bed. A gap at the foot or side of a child's bed is somewhere a foot or an arm can slip into, so it isn't something to fix with cushions. Ask the retailer for an exchange or a refund.

Common question
Is the Memory e-Pocket too soft for an older child?

Answer: Not usually. It's sold as Medium, with two layers of pocket springs doing the support and a fibre top for comfort. A heavier or taller child presses further into the top layer, so if your child is big for their age, compare it with the plain Dual Support e-Pocket, which has less on top of the same springs.
