Why our sleep experts loved it
The Fairfield Backcare is one of those mattresses that, frankly, is unlikely to set your world on fire. It's solid and well-made, and should last as long as you can stand using it. But it's also slightly workmanlike in design and performance, so if you're after top-end performance and glowing recommendations, then look elsewhere. Still, even with a couple of missteps in terms of what it claims to offer, it's a decent bed, especially if you want something more traditional.
First impressions
Straight out of the bag the Fairfield offers a reassuringly old-school look and feel. The Belgian damask cover gives it a suitably classy look, and the tufting is neatly done. It's a deep 26 cm, so it offers some presence without being too bulky. Firm and evenly padded to the touch, there's no plasticky new-mattress smell, just a crisp fabric odour. For a mattress that sits at the budget end of the market, it's put itself together rather well. Sleek, no-frills, practical rather than flashy - it suits the character and price point.
Construction
Inside, 1000 pocket springs do the main work. As the name suggests, the springs nestle in individual fabric pockets, so they move independently from each other. That means they're free to adjust to weight and movement as required, which makes for better support and less motion transfer between them. The edges have a layer which Bensons claim is dynamic reinforced support, but in reality it's less weighty than it sounds. It keeps the perimeter steady enough for a decent night's sleep, but not to the point where the sides don't sink under your weight when you sit on them. On the plus side, it's a stable and secure bed with each side of the spring core, the fillings are different - one designed for summer, one for winter. One side uses a layer of wool to help insulate, while the other side has a softer, breathable layer made from 42 per cent recycled materials. It's simple and effective, though the hand-tufted finish not only adds to the traditional look, but helps keep all the layers locked together so they don't shift around over time. The damask cover then ties everything together with a solid, slightly textured feel.
Comfort
First up, the good news: this is a firm mattress. If you're after that sort of support, you know from the outset what you're getting, and it remains consistent night after night. On my back, I felt supported from the outset, with my hips and shoulders level and stable. Front sleeping felt similar - well-balanced and supportive, and it kept my spine neutral throughout the night. Side sleeping, meanwhile, was a little more challenging, particularly around the shoulders. After a few nights, it settled down a little and felt a little more comfortable, but it never reached the point where I could sleep like this all night long (i roll onto my side mid-way through the night). It's not deeply cushioned, but that's by design and the surface feels reassuringly strong. If you like your mattresses to support you rather than sink into them, you'll like this.
One thing worth noting here is the two different comfort layers. The summer side definitely does feel a bit fresher thanks to the recycled fibre layer, while the winter side has a softer, slightly cosier feel from the wool. It's not hugely different, but there's enough of a change to make the flipping worthwhile when the seasons change. It's nice to have a genuine double-sided design in this price range, especially when so many cheap modern mattresses only have single-sided builds.
Temperature and breathability
Temperature control is another plus here. The damask cover and natural wool layer are doing a good job of keeping things aired up. On warm nights it never felt close or stifling, and in cooler weather the wool side added just a little extra warmth without feeling cloying. The recycled fibre layer also seems to wick away humidity pretty well and for a traditional pocket spring design, it breathes far better than expected and stays consistently comfortable through the night.
Motion transfer
Motion isolation is another area where the 1000 pocket spring setup shows its worth. There's no need to suffer through a night of being pummeled every time your partner shifts position. Yes, a hard turn or weight shift still creates a ripple across the bed, but it's small and mercifully short-lived. For anyone sharing a bed, the reduction in motion transfer compared to any open coil or basic continuous spring mattress is significant. For a single sleeper there's nothing to complain about here. For couples it's steady and stable enough that only one of you moving a lot in your sleep is likely to cause issues.
Edge support
Sadly, the claim of strong edges falls down a little here. Despite the promise of dynamic reinforced support, the perimeter of the bed just doesn't feel as firm as it could or should. Sitting on the side creates a more noticeable compression than the middle of the bed, and sleeping too near to the edge creates a slightly rolling off sensation. It's not a disaster, but it's something you'll notice if you're a side sleeper or tend to sprawl across the bed in your sleep. The support and stability through the middle is very good - flat, even, and firm - but the edges feel in need of more tension. It's the only area that detracts from what is otherwise a solid bed.
Everyday use
The real bonus here is the double-sided design. Flipping it seasonally and rotating every few months will keep the structure even and help the tufts maintain their tension. It's not especially heavy either, so two people can manage turning it. The fabric is durable and easy to care for. After several weeks use, there have been no changes in the firmness and no body impressions have formed. The wool side will flatten slightly over time as all natural fillings will, but the support underneath remains stable and consistent. It's a practical, dependable and easy to live with mattress.
Who this mattress suits
The Fairfield Backcare is best suited to back and front sleepers who want a firm, simple, no-frills mattress. It also works well for those who like the idea of a summer and winter side. Cooler in summer, warmer in winter, it has the build to support both and make it work. If you're buying for a main bedroom and you favour traditional comfort over modern alternatives, it's a sensible buy. It's also a decent option for a guest room where durability and simplicity are more important than luxury. For the money, it offers honest, no-nonsense performance that feels like good value.
Who it doesn't suit
Side sleepers, especially lightweight ones, will find this mattress too firm under the shoulders. Memory foam fans or those who prefer deep cushioning won't enjoy it either. The lack of edge strength is also an issue if you need stability across the full width of the bed. For couples where only one of you moves around a lot in your sleep, it's less of a problem. It's a fair price for what you get but not a bargain - there are other options in this range with better edge support. It's a mattress that earns its keep by being firm and reliable, not by adding luxury touches.
Care and maintenance
Rotate and flip it regularly - once a month at first, then every few months after that. To get the most out of the seasonal sides, make sure you're using both. A breathable protector will help the damask fabric stay clean and last longer. Leave it uncovered for a few minutes each morning to air out. With the tufting and sturdy construction, it should last for years if you maintain it well.
Verdict
The Fairfield Backcare Mattress is a solid, firm mattress that gets the basics right without over-complicating things. It's comfortable for back and front sleeping, breathable all year round and well-built for the price. The two-sided design adds value, while the damask cover gives it a traditional look. The edge support, however, falls short of the claim and is the one area that really doesn't work. For a mattress in this price range, it's largely as it says on the box. It's not luxurious or fancy, but it's honest and consistent, and in a world where most mattresses are hyped-up and over-marketed, that's worth something.
If you're after firm, no-nonsense support and the reassurance of traditional comfort levels and build quality, the Fairfield Backcare is a respectable choice. It won't set your world on fire, but it will look after your back and give you a reliably comfortable night's sleep. Just don't bank on miracles at the edges.
