Why our sleep experts loved it
I tested the Alberta Ortho Mattress in store, and my main reaction was fairly settled after a few minutes: the firm tension works. It gives a steady, braced feel under the back, with enough surface firmness to keep the hips from dipping. I would still keep expectations grounded. This is a practical ortho mattress, not a high-spec showpiece.
The price point feels a little ambitious at full ticket. In a sale, the Alberta becomes easier to justify, because the support is decent and the guarantee period gives some reassurance. At full price, I would also try a Silentnight ortho model before deciding, as that part of the market has plenty of capable firm mattresses.
What it is built around
The support comes from 1,000 pocket springs. That number matters, because it is about the level I look for before expecting proper full-body contouring from a pocket-sprung mattress. Below that, support can start to feel too general. Here, the Alberta did shape to my weight better than a basic open-coil bed, and the middle section felt controlled during the showroom test.
I would not call the spring unit generous for an orthopaedic mattress, though. It is adequate, and the quality felt acceptable under load, but the spec is a touch light for the way this type of mattress is often marketed. Firm upholstery can make a mattress seem stronger than it really is during a short lie-down. Worth remembering.
The display model looked tidy, with the kind of straightforward finish I would expect in this category. I did not see obvious puckering or loose stitching on the one I tried. Long-term fabric wear is a different matter, and a shop floor test cannot tell me how the borders will look after years of being sat on while getting dressed.
Firmness and comfort
The Alberta has a direct, firm feel from the first contact. There is no slow foam hug and no plush top doing the hard work. For my back, that was a positive: my pelvis stayed level and the mattress gave a clean sense of support through the lumbar area.
Side sleeping was where my enthusiasm cooled. My shoulder did not sink in much, and while a few minutes on the bed was bearable, I would be cautious about a whole night on it. Pressure build-up is one of the things I could not prove in store, and firm mattresses often reveal their flaws at 3am rather than during a showroom bounce.
Compared with a Sealy Posturepedic in the same broad firm-mattress conversation, the Alberta feels plainer through the top surface. The Sealy models I have tried often have a little more cushioning before the support kicks in. The Alberta’s appeal is its firmness, so buyers wanting comfort layers to soften the first contact may find it too blunt.
Best suited to
Back-sleeper territory. That is where the Alberta made the strongest case for itself. The mattress kept me flatter and better aligned than many softer hybrids I have tried in store, and the firm tension felt natural rather than punishing in that position.
Front sleepers may also get on with it, especially those who dislike any sag around the hips. Side sleepers need to be more careful. A lighter person, or anyone with sensitive shoulders, may find the surface too unforgiving once the initial “supportive” impression wears off.
Couples should test it together where possible. The showroom floor did not let me judge partner disturbance properly, and a firm pocket-sprung mattress can feel quite different once two people are moving on it through the night. A quick solo test only tells part of the story.
My call after trying it in store
The Alberta Ortho Mattress is a sensible buy for back sleepers who want firm support and can catch it at a sale price. I would not pay a premium for the 1,000-spring spec alone, because that is a sound baseline rather than a luxury marker. My choice would depend heavily on the deal on the day: reduced, I can see the appeal; at full price, I would keep walking the showroom for another comparison.
