Introducing: The Gainsborough Mayfair 1000 Pocket Ultra Firm Mattress
When it comes to mattresses, one size definitely does not fit all. Today, we are focusing on a speciality mattress designed for a specific group of sleepers - The Gainsborough Mayfair 1000 Pocket Ultra Firm Mattress. A heavyweight player in the extra firm league, this mattress indeed is not for everyone. Rather, it is a solution designed for those with specific orthopaedic needs or those suggested by a medical professional to opt for a higher degree of firmness.
How We Assessed It
On paper this is a very hard bed. Mattress Online rates it Extra Firm, its firmest rating, and the build explains why: 1000 pocket springs (the count is for a king size) sit under a dense polyester pad, and tufting pulls the layers tight. The only comfort filling listed is soft white polyester fibre, so a build like this should keep you on top of the bed with very little sink. That points to heavier back sleepers. If you are light or sleep on your side, look at something softer. It is 29cm deep and double-sided, so you can flip it as well as turn it.
Design and Features
With a heritage spanning three decades, Gainsborough was known for pocket sprung mattresses. It ceased trading when its parent, the Airsprung Group, went into administration, and Mattress Online lists this model as ‘Last Chance!’ stock. Their Mayfair 1000 Pocket Ultra Firm mattress is an embodiment of evolution and attention to detail, right from the core to the very surface. It's a blend of 1000 individually pocketed springs, top-tier polyester filling, and a sleek woven damask cover. Plus, with its Ultimate Freshness anti-allergy treatment, you could say that the Mayfair looks fiercely determined to guard your sleep.
The 1000 pocket springs work independently and respond to your body movement. Motion transfer, a usual trouble-maker for tandem sleepers, is no worry with this mattress. The springs' adaptability also ensures better spinal alignment, potentially minimising chances of discomfort or chronic aches.
The comfort layer, filled with breathable polyester fibres, offers a pleasant sleeping surface whilst being an earth-conscious choice, thanks to its recycled and recyclable properties. The breathability of the material guarantees a more refreshed sleep by allowing heat and moisture to move through the mattress freely. A denser polyester pad underneath the comfort layer caters to the mattress's ultra firm feel, offering uncompromising support for your back and hips.
Topping off the Mayfair's distinctive design is a soft woven damask cover, ready to offer a cosy sleep surface. Since this cover cannot be removed for washing, consider investing in a quality mattress protector to keep the surface as immaculate as possible for longer.
Mattress Comfort
True to its claim, the Mayfair guarantees an ultra firm feel. It's evident the mattress has been designed with an unwavering devotion to support. However, this mammoth firmness does not keep it from offering a comfortable resting place. The soft fabric layer makes sure you enjoy sinking into the mattress, albeit slightly, ensuring you do not wholly compromise comfort for support.
One crucial highlight is the mattress's edge-support. Mayfair incorporates two rod edge wires secured with butterfly clips, forming a sturdy PowerEdge border design. These additions enhance edge-stability and minimise that dreaded ‘roll-off' feeling, meaning sitting or sleeping at the edge is bliss!
Suitability
With its formidable firmness, the Gainsborough Mayfair 1000 Pocket Ultra Firm Mattress surely is not one for the faint-hearted or side sleepers. It's a specialist solution ideally suited only for back sleepers. If you're a back sleeper with a recommendation from the medical fraternity for an ultra-firm mattress, Mayfair might be your dream come true. However, explore other options if you're prone to sleeping on your side or are not in search of orthopaedic properties in a mattress.
What Customers Thought
One owner wrote that the mattress is ‘very good quality’ and praised the ‘fast and friendly service’.
The Verdict
The Gainsborough Mayfair 1000 Pocket Ultra Firm Mattress offers strong, unapologetic support for those who need or want it. With its 1000 responsive pocket springs, unique edge-support, and open-air construction, this mattress makes a solid case for itself as an ergonomic solution for back sleepers and those with specific orthopaedic requirements.
Its ultra-firm tension means it's not for everyone - this mattress knows its audience and caters to them without any compromise. For the right sleeper though, it seems nothing short of a dream.
Make sure to take a little caution though. It's our experienced opinion to ensure that this is the correct mattress for you. Ultra-firm mattresses can often promote stiffness or discomfort if not suitable for your specific sleep needs. Don't let the features overpromise if the product doesn't match your requirements.
The Gainsborough Mayfair 1000 Pocket Ultra Firm Mattress comes with the assurance of careful crafting and thought-out design to add value to your sleeping experience. As always, remember that a mattress should complement your individual sleep habits and comfort requirements. Happy sleeping!
