Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Wentworth Mercer Natural Pocket 2000 Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

In the showroom, the Wentworth Mercer Natural Pocket 2000 felt immediately firm, settled and properly built, with none of that cheap springy hollowness I’m wary of. As an average-weight combi sleeper, I liked the hip and back support when rolling onto my back or front, though I’d want a touch more give at the shoulder for longer side-sleeping stretches. The 2000 pocket springs, strong edges and natural wool, cotton, silk and cashmere layers gave it a breathable, traditional feel rather than a foamy hug. I’d shortlist it if you want a firm, turnable, old-school mattress, but the tufted surface and short five-year guarantee are worth weighing up before buying.

Why our sleep experts loved it

My showroom time with the Wentworth Mercer Natural Pocket 2000 Mattress left me more convinced than I expected. It has the feel of a proper traditional bed: firm, settled and well packed through the top, with none of the hollow bounce that gives cheaper sprung mattresses away. Old-school, clearly. In this case that is a strength.

The spec is doing real work. A 2000 pocket spring core is a strong base for a firm mattress, and the comfort layer uses cashmere, cotton, silk and wool rather than relying on a thin token pad. Lying across it, the surface felt breathable and substantial. The springs stayed buried, as they should on a mattress at this level.

Traditional construction, done with care

The look is unmistakably classic: wool tufts across the top, a structured border, and a finish that would sit naturally on a divan base. Buyers after a smooth, flat-topped foam mattress may find it too formal. Anyone who likes a Hypnos-style feel will understand the appeal straight away.

The border deserves credit. It is hand side-stitched, with air vents around the sides, and the edge support felt properly braced when weight was put near the perimeter. That makes the mattress feel wider in use, particularly for couples who do not want to be nudged back toward the middle. Store floors are kind to mattresses, of course; years of sitting on the same edge every morning is a tougher exam.

At 29cm deep, it has enough presence without becoming comically tall once bedding is added. The turning handles are not decorative either, because this is a double-sided mattress with fillings on both faces. That is one of the more impressive details here. Plenty of mainstream mattresses at this end of the market are single-sided, so a turnable build gives the Wentworth Mercer a more premium character. Worth knowing: flipping it will not be fun for one person.

Comfort and firmness

The firm rating is accurate. The mattress holds the body high, with a flat and supportive feel through the hips and lower back. It is far removed from the cushioned sink of an Emma Hybrid or a Simba. Those beds feel more modern and foamy; this feels denser, drier and more traditionally sprung.

The natural fillings are well judged. Wool and cotton bring the breathable character, while silk and cashmere make the surface feel smoother than a basic ortho mattress. I would still treat the seasonal temperature claims with sensible restraint. A showroom visit cannot recreate a warm bedroom after six hours under a duvet, so the cooling side remains a strong indication rather than a proven overnight result.

The tufts are part of the deal. They help hold the mattress together and give that properly anchored feel, but they also create a textured sleeping surface. Some people barely notice them. Others never get on with the dimples. I found the padding thick enough to stop them feeling intrusive, though lighter side sleepers may want a softer top layer than this provides.

Who should shortlist it

Back sleepers are the natural audience. The support feels steady and confident, and the pocket springs respond without the whole mattress moving as one slab. Front sleepers who already prefer firm beds should also find plenty to like. Petite side sleepers, or anyone with sensitive shoulders, need a proper in-person lie down before committing.

For shared beds, the combination of a stable edge and individual pocket springs is reassuring. Movement control felt decent during handling in store, but partner disturbance is one of those things that only shows itself properly at home, with two people turning half-asleep. I would not buy it blind purely on that claim.

The closest comparison in feel is a more premium Hypnos natural-filled mattress. Hypnos still has the brand weight and a slightly finer finish, but the Wentworth Mercer gets closer than many would expect in components, look and general comfort. The catch is availability: it appears to be mainly a Mattress Online proposition, so cross-shopping and trying it locally may be harder than with bigger retail names.

Final call

The 5-year guarantee feels a little short beside the otherwise premium cues. UK manufacture, National Bed Federation approval and BS7177: 2008 fire resistance for home use all help, but a longer guarantee would have made the proposition feel cleaner.

I would happily recommend this to someone wanting a firm, breathable, turnable mattress with a traditional tufted finish. The buying decision hinges on taste more than spec. Get on with the firmer feel and the old-school surface, and there is remarkably little here to pick apart.

Questions and Answers About The Wentworth Mercer Natural Pocket 2000 Mattress

Prospective customers had the following questions about the product

Mr Kg
Can you shed some light on the firmness of the Wentworth Mercer mattress? Is it suitable for a back sleeper?

Answer: Certainly. This mattress is crafted with a firm tension to fully support your spine while you sleep. Back sleepers will particularly benefit from this level of firmness as it discourages the spine from moving into an unnatural shape overnight. Also, if you need orthopaedic support or have been advised about a firm mattress, you'll find this choice suitable. -Thanks, Becky

Is this mattress suitable for use throughout the year, or is it better suited for particular seasons?

Answer: The Wentworth Mercer mattress indeed caters to comfort all year round. Thanks to the blend of natural fibres such as wool, cotton, silk and cashmere in the comfort layer, it can help regulate your body temperature. These materials are breathable and can wick away moisture during summer, and act as efficient insulators to lock in warmth during colder months.

I've noticed some conflicting reviews, some find the mattress comfortable while others don't. Can you explain this?

Answer: Comfort can be highly subjective and varies from person to person. Some individuals might find the firm tension of this mattress perfectly comfortable, especially those who are back sleepers or require orthopedic support. However, it might not provide the same comfort level for everyone, especially side sleepers.

Is the Wentworth Mercer mattress suitable for those who share their bed?

Answer: The mattress design incorporates I-Fibre and a solid border with side-stitching, allowing you to use the full surface without experiencing the so-called 'roll-off' effect. This added stability creates an increased sleeping area, which is particularly beneficial when sharing the bed.

Are there any measures to increase the longevity of this Wentworth Mercer mattress?

Answer: The mattress is turnable, featuring sumptuous fillings on both sides. Routinely flipping the mattress according to schedule, using the built-in handles, can help maintain the life and performance of the mattress for an extended period.
