I wouldn't buy the Jay-Be Dual Support e-Sprung Mattress for a child who sleeps on it every night. Its main spring layer is an open coil, a unit of springs wired together, and I don't put open coil under a growing child. Where it makes sense is a pull-out or spare bed for sleepovers, where you can accept a cheaper build for the odd night.
An open coil underneath, micro pockets on top
Jay-Be calls the base layer a Deep e-Spring core. It's an open coil, springs linked into one unit, with a layer of micro e-Pocket springs above it, then fibre comfort layers, a soft knitted cover and a 3D spacer border. There's no foam in it. Jay-Be makes it 19cm deep and calls the feel Medium.
The micro pockets soften the surface, but the support underneath is the linked coil, and that decides how the mattress wears. An open coil passes movement through the whole unit and dips where the weight sits most nights. If your child sleeps in the same spot every night, that's exactly where the dip will form.
Happy children, and two owners who felt the coil
Most owners are happy, and many say their child likes it. The complaints are about the feel. One owner can feel the springs through the top cover and says it isn't the medium it claims to be, and another says their son finds it no different from the decade-old mattress it replaced.
One owner bought it for the lower tier of a stowaway bed, for occasional use by a child, and that's the job I'd give it too.
A spare bed, never the main one
Avoid it for your child's main bed. Avoid it too for an older or heavier child, who will press harder on the coil and find the springs sooner. And if you want a mattress you can turn, this one is one-sided, so all you can do is rotate it every few months.
What to buy instead
Buy the Jay-Be Dual Support e-Pocket instead. It keeps the micro e-Pocket layer and the fibre comfort layers and puts a deep layer of pocket springs underneath in place of the open coil, which is the change I'd pay for. Measure it when it arrives, as owners report that model coming up short of the frame.
