Head to head

Sealy has 20 of its 57 mattresses sprung and 8 all memory foam; Otty has sprung throughout, with pocket springs or a hybrid build in every model. Only Sealy offers latex, in 11 models. Sealy runs from soft-medium to extra firm, and Otty runs from medium to extra firm. Sealy is the cheaper way in, though not by much. But at the top end Sealy goes further, so it also has the more premium options.

Sealy

Sealy has formerly separated from Silentnight, who once managed the UK arm of the popular retailer and will now be re-acquired by Tempur Sealy International. For those who don’t know, Sealy is the world's biggest bed brand that’s not down to luck, Sealy mattresses are highly regarded and at a price point that is achievable for the vast majority of people. What’s more, the company produces handmade beds right here in the UK using some of the finest fillings and upholstery.

Sealy’s Posturepedic technology makes it ideal for those with back and neck pain looking for that additional bit of support, becoming the only partner to be approved under the Orthopaedic Advisory Board

Otty

Otty is a British brand that started in 2016 and has grown quickly into one of the most recognised hybrid mattress names on the UK market. The company is based in Leeds and sells direct to the customer, cutting out the middle man in the traditional bed retail chain and passing the savings on in the form of long trial periods and sensible prices.

Their hybrid lineup pairs cooling gel infused memory foam with individually encased pocket springs, and it is the hybrid build that Otty is best known for. Most mattresses ship vacuum packed in a box, and buyers get a 100 night home trial along with a 10 year guarantee.

Sealy owner satisfaction

Satisfaction is at the heart of what Sealy offers. Since their inception Sealy has offered numerous different base and comfort layers to try and appease all areas of the market. The company has largely remained successful in their plight thanks to their strong support within the mid-tier market. Owners are mostly happy with what they bought, and comfort is the thing they mention most often. Back pain easing comes up as well, with one owner writing "my backache has virtually disappeared now". The complaints are far fewer, and firmness is the main one: some owners found theirs harder than expected and a smaller number softer, with one calling it "Harder than the model we tried in the shop". Dips forming where people sleep are the other complaint that recurs.

Sealy supportiveness

The Sealy lineup includes everything from soft-medium through to firm tensions. The most popular in the range are the mediums which give the best overall support for most people, pairing well with the pocket spring support layer to offer full body contouring for all-round support without feeling too-firm.

For those looking for a bit more support, Sealy has firmness grades exceeding firm and entering extra-firm territory. We would personally recommend these only for specific circumstances as comfort is reduced slightly to better aid support.

Sealy durability

When it comes to durability Sealy performs in line with expectation. We do see a bit of fallout from some of the cheaper in the range, particularly the open coil sprung models which, combined with a single sided comfort layer often do not have long-lasting properties and may not afford as good value as initially perceived due to their reduced operating lifespan. Contrary to this is the excellent pocket sprung options on offer from Sealy, particularly when paired with a double sided comfort layer. A combination of these will ensure you get a long standing mattress that will last far better and in-line with the average expectancy where people typically look at replacing their mattress (7 years)

Otty owner satisfaction

Plenty of owners write about support, often with a bad back behind the purchase. "Back ache stopped immediately", one wrote, and another found it "firm but really supportive" and "Great for my bad back." Couples mostly say partner movement barely registers: "I never get disturbed by my wife when she moves around anymore".

Complaints about the mattress itself mostly come down to firmness. Some owners found it harder than they bargained for ("it is very very firm" and "It seems firmer than I expected"), and the hot-sleeper verdict splits, from "as a hot sleeper I find it very breathable" to "I’ve felt rather hot during the night." Edge support splits the same way: one owner wrote "Decent edge support too, much better than of the Emma one." while another's husband "feels like he’s rolling towards the edge of it." Many owners praise a fast delivery, but the sharpest gripes are about couriers rather than the mattress. One owner had the pick-up and delivery go out of sync twice. Another wrote that "Otty had delivery problems with their previous couriers who did not deliver" and still called the customer service "excellent".

Otty supportiveness

The Otty Original Hybrid uses a top layer of cooling gel memory foam over a reflex foam transition layer and a core of pocket springs. Each spring moves independently, which is why the mattress copes well with two people of different weights sleeping side by side. The foam layers add enough pressure relief for the shoulders and hips, and the spring core keeps the lower back properly supported without letting anyone sink into a hammock shape.

For heavier sleepers over about 15 stone, Otty makes the Firm Hybrid, a flippable mattress rated 9/10 for firmness on one side and 10/10 on the other. Support comes up again and again in the reviews. One owner wrote: "I feel much better supported at hips and shoulders when I'm sleeping".

Otty durability

Otty uses a high gauge spring unit and good quality foams above it, which is the right recipe for a mattress that holds its shape over the long run. Most Otty covers are removable, and several are machine washable, which is unusual at this level of the market and helps the mattress stay fresh over the years.

Owners split on how it wears. One owner about two years in reported "absolutely no signs of sagging", while another found theirs "already dipping in the middle" after eighteen months. The 10 year guarantee gives a clear signal of how much life the brand expects out of its own product. Given the materials and the build, Otty mattresses are well positioned to last the seven to ten years that most buyers are looking for.

I’ve been sleeping on this mattress for a few nights now and I’m pleased to say it’s making a positive difference. I was hoping for something supportive and comfortable, and this mattress delivers on both fronts. What I like The medium-firm feel hits a nice balance: not so hard that you feel like you’re lying on a plank, yet firm enough to feel properly supported. The product’s description calls it “medium-firm” and highlights the balance between support and plushness. The cooling feature is visible: the mattress uses INFUSE™ Black Diamond Graphite foam (which I must admit sounded fancy to me) to help with temperature regulation. According to the spec it “keeps you cool while cushioning your hips and back”. On warmer nights I’ve noticed I’m less restless. Excellent support for back and hips: I wake up without the usual niggles around the lower back and shoulders that I used to get with older mattresses. The “AlignSupport® coils” and plant-based ComfortCore layer appear to be doing their job. Good edge support: the mattress doesn’t feel as though you’ll roll off when you get close to the edge, and the usable surface feels generous. That’s helpful when two of us are sharing it. Quality and build: the cover feels robust, the stitching seems neat, and while I won’t pretend to have dismantled it, it gives a sense of quality rather than a bargain compromise. Where there’s room for improvement (or things to know) It’s a bit heavier/setup-intensive than my old one: rotating or manoeuvring it takes a bit of effort. If you prefer a super soft, sinking-in feel (the “body-hug” kind) this mattress might feel a little firm. Some reviews of the same family of mattresses note that side-sleepers (especially lightweight ones) might find medium-firm less contouring than they’d like. As with many new mattresses, there was a short adjustment period for my body clock and sleep-muscles to adapt. The first two nights felt slightly unfamiliar; by night three I was into it. Cooling is better than my previous mattress, but if you’re a very hot sleeper I wouldn’t say it’s magic. The spec claims better temperature control but some users of related models still noted some heat retention. Verdict In my view this is a strong pick if you want a mattress that blends support with comfort, especially if you’ve got a back that lets you know when the mattress is doing a poor job. For someone like me (part-time mystic, allotment keeper, old bones) it feels like a good investment in sleep rather than just a piece of furniture. I’d say I’m waking up more rested, and that alone makes the change worthwhile.

Lying on a bed in a shop fully clothed for a few minutes is one thing. Lying on it for 8 hours in thin nightwear is something else. I tried the Newton bed in the shop and it seemed comfortable, although it may have been there years and hundreds of customers may have bounced on it. Once delivered (and Bensons were totally professional in that regard) I got backache after one night. Others have remarked their bed seemed firmer than in the shop. Dreams sell the same mattress but they call it Hagen and rate it very firm which it certainly is. I found I could get my hands behind the small of my back and exactly the same when I lay on the floor !! I also got cubital tunnel syndrome (hard bed pressed on shoulder and elbow causing pain down arm and little finger went numb !) A topper improved things a bit but if you need a topper to make your bed comfy you're probably lying on the wrong bed ! After a week of pain I decided to switch to a medium Newton which you wouldn't know existed if you only went in the store and didn't look online. I zoom called Bensons HQ who confirmed none of their shops displayed it. So why didn't I order a medium in the first place ? I didn't like the idea of buying a bed I hadn't tried first (if that is any guide) but in the end I was forced to ! Now medium doesn't mean soft. It just means slightly less firm !! I phoned Sealy HQ who explained the only difference is Newton Medium has firm and medium foam, not extra firm foam like their firm version. I'd give Newton firm a 9/10 rating for firmness and Newton Medium 7/10 although that may ease to a 6 in a few months. Incidentally I did consider the Bronte too. I had a pillow top but found it got frayed and torn after 6 years (I'm a restless sleeper), was heavier to turn, higher and the sheets didn't fit. As others have mentioned I found it warm to lie on after just 10 minutes so wondered how hot it would be after 8 hours. To be brutally honest I didn't think it worth an extra £400 which is a lot for a pensioner ! If you want a soft top buy a mattress topper for the Newton Medium and save yourself the extra expense. A final point, I found the Newton Medium somewhat lighter than the firm, probably due to the lack of hard heavy-duty foam.

Absolutely horrible. This is a completely unbiased review after owning it for almost 4 months now, and rotating it around as per instructions. After trying out a few beds in various stores and doing some research into the kind of bed I wanted in an Extra Firm, this was one was the best *when I tried laying down on it in store*. However, when I received this, it felt like a completely different mattress - soft, pudgy, sinks down in the middle (what Central zoning PowerPack/lumbar support technology? Is this a scam?) and downright uncomfortable. I got this to help with a back injury I suffered a while back, so that means solid support that keeps that back held up firm, but this was the opposite, and the softness of it actually caused me more pain and discomfort in the long run. EdgeGuard - newsflash: it has no EdgeGuard support or technology in it. You roll off the edge just like on a standard mattress. Extra Firm rating: Nothing more than a lie. There is nothing about this that could classify it as extra firm. Other than its bad quality, the firmness rating would be medium to firm. Definitely not Extra Firm, and it was definitely not the same mattress I tried in store. The only positives were the delivery crew were amazing. Top lads. I really regret not going with my initial option from mattressonline, which had the same specs and was cheaper too. I would not even pay £200 for this rubbish.

In the store this was the most comfortable mattress. We tried nearly every mattress in the shop. The selling point was the construction of the mattress and the salespersons insistence this was one of the most popular and highly rated mattress in the U.K. We bought the mattress and the delivery was arranged. First class service. Once the mattress has been delivered and the packaging removed, the smell was overpowering in the room. This was described to us as the mattress "off gassing" and the smell would dissipate within 48 hours. Luckily we have extra bedroom so it was left to vent its gasses. Two weeks later I decided to make up the bed even though the "off gassing" was still there. We have slept in it once, my wife who suffers from asthma now sleeps in the spare room. She awoke in the night in a coughing fit. I am trying to use the bed myself but I wake up with this smell wafting from the bed. This smell was not evident in the showroom. The current advice is to place it in the garage to air properly. I am so angry about this mattress. It's a shame because we have used bensonforbeds regularly and never had any issue before. This mattress will be withdrawn from sale if they want loyal custom.

A great mattress. We looked at several of the leading hybrid mattresses on the market, and after a discussion with the sales person via chat on the website (as it was during lockdown), they were able to answer many of my questions clearly and exactly why Otty Mattress is a better product than its competitors. The delivery service and also the ease of ordering the product was great and most importantly we have had fantastic nights sleep since purchasing this mattress. Fantastic product and you wi...

Absolutely love my Otty matress, I went for the hybrid and I was not disappointed. I was hit by a car whilst pregnant and broke my tibia platueu so have since suffered with problems in both knees and my back so it was important to get a good nights sleep and rest well. The Otty matress has given me just that and my 18 month old son loves snoozing ontop of their pillows too. They offer a 100 day money back guarantee which I think is great, although personally I'd be pretty surprised if anyone wan...

Appalling customer service. Wasted a days annual leave waiting for my mattress, it arrived the following day. There was no communication and when I questioned it I was told that I was rude and they couldn?t do anything to help. I paid extra to have the mattress delivered to the room of my choice . On delivery the men refused to take it upstairs due to health and safety regulations. Again when I mentioned this to otty customer services they weren?t interested. Eventually I was told by the boss Da...

Bought two mattresses for two different bedrooms; one original hybrid and one aura hybrid mattress. Although advertised as levels of 7 and 6 firmness respectively, they are much firmer than expected; you barely sink into them! The aura hybrid was used by my partner and I (15 and 11 stone) and we still found it very firm that it gave us lower back pain. We trialed them for 6 weeks before giving up on them and when we tried to claim the 100-night trial that each mattress advertised, it turns out w...
