Brand

Aspire

Overall score4.7/5
Price range£205 – £299

On aggregated owner reviews the two are level at 4.7 out of 5, so the choice comes down to price, trial and guarantee.

Head to head

Relyon has 17 of its 18 mattresses sprung; Aspire has sprung throughout, with pocket springs or a hybrid build in every model. Only Relyon offers latex, in 5 models. Relyon runs from soft to extra firm, and Aspire runs from medium to medium-firm. Relyon covers more of the firmness scale, which helps if two sleepers need different feels. Relyon is the cheaper way in, though not by much. But at the top end Relyon goes further, so it also has the more premium options. Relyon's owner score rests on far more reviews (606 against 130), so treat Aspire's number as the less settled of the two.

Relyon

Relyon was the first bed maker to be awarded the Furniture Makers' Guild Mark, and has been making beds in Wellington, Somerset since 1858. That gives it one of the longest continuous trading histories of any mattress brand in the UK, and the company still operates from the same Somerset site today.

Relyon specialises in traditional pocket sprung mattresses with natural fillings, and the range is built around wool, cashmere, silk and horsehair used in different combinations depending on the model. The brand is sold through bed specialists and department stores rather than online direct, which puts it in a different category to the bed in a box brands but also means the quality control is tied to a factory that has been doing this for over a century and a half.

Aspire

Aspire is a UK manufacturer based in Barnsley, Yorkshire, founded in 2013 as Aspire Furniture Ltd. The company has grown steadily by combining traditional upholstery skills with modern design at accessible pricing. All Aspire mattresses and beds are handcrafted in the UK, and the brand sells direct through its own website as well as through Amazon, eBay, B&Q, Very and other major retail partners.

What separates Aspire from many mid-market rivals is the combination of genuine British manufacturing with multi-channel retail distribution. Designer collaborations with Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Catherine Lansfield bring aesthetic value that is rare at this price tier.

Relyon owner satisfaction

Relyon scores strongly in owner reviews, and comfort and support are what owners write about most. The firm models suit the people who went looking for firm. One owner called theirs “Extra firm but so supportive and comfortable for both back and side sleeping”. The complaint that comes up most is a mattress that turned out firmer than the buyer expected, and an owner who was expecting medium wrote “It's like sleeping on a board.”

Several owners who sleep hot say theirs is cooler than the memory foam it replaced, though a couple found the latex models warmer than they expected. On the flip side, Relyon is not the brand to pick if you want that slow sinking memory foam feel, because the range is almost entirely pocket sprung.

Relyon supportiveness

Relyon's support comes from its pocket spring units, and spring counts in the main ranges start around 1,000 and go up to around 3,000 in the higher end models. Above the springs, the natural fillings are layered by hand, tufted into place and finished with a damask cover that lets air move through the mattress rather than trapping body heat.

For back and stomach sleepers, the firmer models give the solid support that helps the lower back stay in line with the shoulders. Side sleepers will want to look at the softer and medium options, which use more generous layers of wool and cashmere on top to cushion the hip and shoulder. Because the mattresses are hand finished, the support is noticeably consistent across the whole surface, with no weak edges or sagging middle.

Relyon durability

A Relyon mattress is built to last, and the brand has the Furniture Makers' Guild Mark and a hundred and sixty year trading history to back that claim up. Hand tufting keeps the natural fillings in place instead of letting them shift over time, which is the single biggest factor in how long a traditional mattress stays comfortable.

Several owners are replacing an older Relyon after long service, and one bought again because “my previous mattress had given me more than 20 years of amazing nights sleep”. A handful report dips where they sleep instead, in some cases within the first week. The underlying spring units are built to outlast the fillings above them. If you are looking for a mattress that works out cheaper per year than a budget model that needs replacing every four or five, Relyon is one of the few brands in the market that can genuinely deliver on that promise.

Aspire owner satisfaction

Owners mostly rate Aspire mattresses as comfortable and good value for the price. Firmness is the usual complaint, and it runs both ways: several found the Natural Cashmere models firmer than expected, while a few found the Pocket+ models softer than expected. The multi-channel distribution means buyers can compare offers across several retailers, which tends to keep pricing honest. The Yorkshire manufacturing heritage and Union Jack labelling give buyers visible confidence in where the product comes from.

The main area where Aspire is still building is customer service infrastructure. The brand has scaled quickly and the returns and support processes are still catching up with the growth rate. In our experience the process works, but it can take longer than at more established rivals.

Aspire supportiveness

Every Aspire mattress we list is pocket-sprung, whether Natural Cashmere or rolled Pocket+. Spring counts run from 1000 in the Pocket+ models to 3000 in the Natural Cashmere and Silk, which on paper is a sound specification for the price point. Owners describe the support much as you'd expect from that build: one Pocket+ owner found theirs “quite soft on the top surface and then firmer springs”, while a Natural Cashmere 2000 owner said theirs does “slope away if you sit on the edge of the bed”. Back sleepers and combination sleepers across average weight ranges are well served throughout the catalogue. Side sleepers should focus on the softer pocket spring options.

Heavier sleepers benefit from the stronger spring units in the upper tiers of the range. The overall support profile sits at mid-market rather than premium, which is appropriate for the pricing and honestly positioned by the brand.

Aspire durability

Aspire manufactures in Yorkshire with traditional upholstery techniques and invests in training local craftspeople, which supports consistent build quality across the product range. The materials are reasonable grade for the mid-market tier, and the multi-channel distribution means warranty claims can be handled through whichever retailer you purchased from.

Durability at the mid-market tier is typically average rather than exceptional. Buyers looking for 10-year-plus longevity should consider whether the premium heritage specialists offer better value over time. For the intended use case of a well-made mid-market British mattress at accessible pricing, Aspire delivers what the positioning promises.

A bit extreme perhaps but I've waited a full year before posting this review. When we were looking for a mattress, I read lots of reviews from people who were reviewing something they'd only slept on for a couple of days or perhaps weeks and I didn't find these especially helpful. This mattress wasn't our first choice, we'd originally bought a different one that unfortunately turned out to be faulty. As a side note, Dreams were absolutely brilliant over this - after I reported the issues, we had an engineer visit within a couple of days and it was quickly confirmed that our original purchase had been duff. After our initial bad experience, we didn't want to have a straight replacement, so we re-visited our local store (Chester) to have another look at the potential replacements they had on offer. The sales team there were fantastic, we saw the same advisor who'd helped us on our initial visit - we explained the situation so she knew she wasn't going to earn any commission from helping us but she was wonderful, she spent ages with us and really gave us fantastic service - huge thanks to her! So, at last to the point. I wouldn't have considered a soft mattress, if we hadn't been directed to it by the sleep match machine but our initial impression was excellent, the mattress felt sturdy and well made as well as being very comfortable, although not particularly 'soft'. A year on and we are so, so happy with our choice! My husband's back pain has gone, as has my neck and hip pain - I've packed away the knee pillow that I was having to use to reduce the aches I was feeling with our old mattress. After a few weeks, the pillow top did soften up - I'd been a bit nervous about this happening as I didn't really like the idea of a soft mattress but I needn't have worried, every night is like sleeping on a huge, incredibly supportive marshmallow, it's just lovely. I've never slept better and I wholeheartedly recommend the Highbridge.

Let me start by saying that I've owned this mattress since 28/11/21 So I'm in a pretty good place to review after just about 4 years of owning one. We bought this mattress after popping into a brick and mortar Dreams store and after much testing around the showroom we found that this one was the best by a wide margin. We prefer medium firm between us and some of the feature we were looking for were: - Being able to move around in the night without disturbing the other - Quiet, so no creaking of springs or scrunching of fabrics - Soft, quilted feeling top fabrics - Firm supports that didn't make you feel like you were being swallowed - Body heat distribution so that you didn't get really warm and uncomfortable when trying to sleep - Durable. I'd bought a lot of relatively cheap mattresses before springing for the Bridgwater and was hoping to get more than a handful of years before it started to sag and develop dips etc. Well. 4 years in and the thing is still pretty much perfect. We love this mattress! There's hardly any wear on it at all in spite of almost nightly use since the day it arrived. When I sit down on it, it's still as medium firm as the day we bought it. I'm a tall, heavy bloke and my wife is around half my weight so it'd be easy to tell if the durability was poor because our old mattresses started to look a bit like a skate park ramp after 4 years but the Relyon hasn't so much as developed a dip where I sleep. How's that for durability? This is a high-quality, very comfortable, super durable mattress that's still going strong 4 years in. If you're looking for something comfortable, quiet, firm and doesn't feel like a bouncy castle when your partner gets up for a glass of water in the night, this is the one for you. Cheers Dreams and Relyon!

Really pleased with the Relyon Luxury Pashmina 2350 Pocket Mattress and it took sometime to find the best mattress. I had tested out hybrid including Eve, Origin and more traditional ones from sleepeezee. I think Relyon fill their mattresses with quality fillings, Reylon leave it to you to rate the comfort and firmness it is indicated as being either a medium or medium-firm by some retailers. I would call this mattress a firm with a comfortable and premium softness that doesn't make it feel like you are sleeping on a table top. It will soften over time. It is a rotate only mattress, it doesn't flip and this caused me to take a risk as I prefer the option to rotate and flip ensuring you get a long life from the mattress. However unlike the more hybrid mattresses that lack decent, natural fillings, this mattress as been well made and designed as having a single sleeping surface. Reylon may like other mattress makers save production costs, but the Mattress Online (MO) price was very competitive around the £800 mark for a king size. As a front sleeper I needed something a little supportive and I can sometimes suffer with lower back pain with a softer mattress when lying down or even getting out of bed. I bought a new bedstead ottoman for this mattress which added more height, so also consider whether you need to raise your mattresses higher or lower to support you getting in and out. If you want a soft, plush bed that you sink into; this is NOT for you. If you want a hotel-esq supportive and premium mattress then DO give this a whirl. Review written after week 6 of delivery. I added a Hansleep Memory Foam mattress cover with a 2.5cm topper just to give it a little more cushion.

The quality of the stitching and fabric is top but one night on what was meant to be a don't mattress (as was the one on store) and I've woken up with pain between my shoulders and really sore ribs. So disappointed as we've already swapped to this mattress from another one at Dreams. Please keep your mattresses up to date in the shops. I can't even wait for this one to compress a bit as the last mattress also caused me to go to see a chiropractor! Not having a good time.

Really disappointed this was a replacement for our Grayson mattress that had a fault. We upgraded by £600 as this mattress was absolutely lovely in store and surpassed anything else. We have had the mattress less than a week and within 2 days I have had to contact Dreams as the sides are almost 5 cm higher than the rest of the mattress making it very uncomfortable and forcing you to the middle of the bed. Dreams have been very helpful on both occasions and I am now waiting for a Homeserve inspection to decide if this is a manufacturing fault. Hopefully Homeserve will be as helpful as Dreams and we can finally get a suitable mattress.

Only slept on it for a few nights so will give an update after a couple of months. The mattress is not light, the drivers could only drop it at the door due to Covid and it was seriously difficult to move, the mattress is really thick and doesn;t bend so was a nightmare to get upstairs. The mattress is quite a bit firmer than I thought it would be but it is not uncomfortable and I am sure it will loosen up in a few days / weeks. There is no movement when either of us toss or turn in the night. FANTASTIC! It is VERY thick so be sure you have some extra deep fitted sheets to hand, a normal bed sheet won't fit. Also the thickness adds quite a bit of height so if you are short, your legs will dangle over the edge and you have to jump off! The quality is really good and better than previous mattresses I paid a lot more for it feels like a bed you would get in a 5 star hotel. Would defintiely recommend Aspire products.

5 David,

I've been suffering with a bad back for a few years now, I thought it might be the mattress so I spent £1800 on a new one from a big brand name, my issues continued and I just accepted it as part of getting old. We bought this mattress for our spare room and one night when I was restless and didn't want to wake my wife I decided to sleep in the spare room, the next morning my back pain eased, I used this mattress for another couple of nights and my aches had virtually gone. I couldn't believe it what an amazing product. I then started using the main mattress again and after a few nights my back pain returned, one night on the Aspire mattress and I woke up pain free again. I have since bought another one for the main bedroom and have been back pain free since. The two Aspire mattresses cost about the same as the one big brand mattress, fantastic quality and value literally changed my life. Thank you Aspire.

I ordered a new mattress from Mattress Online and the service was absolutely brilliant! It arrived in less than 24 hours, which was amazing, but unfortunately it just wasn't quite right for me. One quick phone call later and they happily exchanged it under their 60-night guarantee; again delivered in under 24 hours, free of charge. The replacement (an Aspire Pocket+ 1000 Memory Box Top Mattress) is perfect; super comfortable and exactly what I was looking for. I have a constant pain in my back following injury and surgery 7 years ago, but this mattress is fabulous and I'm sleeping so much better already! Highly recommend Mattress Online: incredible service, great products, and really competitive prices.

We bought this mattress after reading medium is better for side sleepers…. Unfortunately the mattress just isn’t for us and have chosen to go back to a firm mattress… this mattress is good quality tho but like I say just didn’t suit our needs.

I exchanged a 5 for a 3 level softness and was recommended this mattress by a mattress online representative. The 3 was supposed to be softer and cooler, but there is no difference! Still very hard and despite purporting to have a built in topper there is no evidence of such. Totally disappointed with a mattress I now need to get rid of and purchase elsewhere!
