Why our sleep experts loved it
I’ve been looking forward to getting my hands on the Simba Hybrid 1500 Pocket Kids Bunk Mattress because kids bunk mattresses are usually either wafer-thin or weirdly hard. This one is aimed at giving proper comfort and support for young children, and the hybrid build is clearly designed to be durable, breathable and easy to clean. When I ran my hand across the cover it felt smooth and practical rather than ‘luxury’, which is exactly what I want for a bunk bed where spills and sticky fingers are part of the deal. If you are looking for a quality mattress for your child's bunk bed, then this could be the one for you, but it’s not going to feel like a big, deep adult hybrid.
The Simba Hybrid 1500 Pocket Kids Bunk Mattress is for kids age 3 and up and it uses 1500 pocket springs to adjust to your child's body. When I pressed down with my palm I could feel the springs responding in smaller sections rather than the whole surface dipping, which is what you want as they wriggle about in the night. On my side, I could feel it sitting on the firmer side, so if your child is very light or a dedicated side sleeper, it might feel a bit too ‘straight’ around the shoulder compared to something with a thicker comfort layer. It is breathable, but it’s still foam over springs, so if your kid runs hot you might still want to pair it with a breathable protector rather than anything plasticky. Plus, the product comes with a 60-night trial, which is handy, although in reality you’ll probably know pretty quickly if it’s too firm or too bouncy for them.
When it comes to the base and comfort layers within, the mattress is made from a few different layers of foam in the comfort layer following a dense assortment of good quality pocket springs in the base. Lying on my back, it felt nicely level through the hips and lower back, and I didn’t get that hammock feeling you sometimes get on cheaper kids mattresses. Sitting on the edge, it held up better than I expected for a bunk mattress, but it’s still not the sort of edge support you’d want for a child that perches on the side every morning, it compresses and you can feel the drop. This combination is great for kids because it provide a balance of comfort and support that is difficult to obtain at tis price point elsewhere, but I do wish it had proper side handles for rotating because getting a mattress in and out of a bunk is a faff at the best of times.
