Your shoulder sinks into the Blueberry for a second and then meets something that holds it: one layer of airy foam over a sheet of tiny pocket springs, with none of memory foam's slow settle under that. It's medium firm, 24cm deep, and the rung in this new Hyde & Sleep range I'd put most people on.
Back and combination sleepers are the easy fit, and so is anybody who cooks on a memory foam bed. Light side sleepers should steer clear, because one comfort layer at medium firm won't let your shoulder sink far enough. Avoid it too if you're a heavier body after a full height spring unit under the hips. The brand and I have history: too firm, mostly, and a bit dear with it. This one changes my mind, and of the four new beds it's the one I'd buy.
Same money as the Raspberry, and no memory foam in it
The firmer bed next to it costs the same and puts memory foam on top. This one puts Serene foam there instead, which Dreams sells on billions of microscopic air capsules and quicker recovery than memory foam. Strip the trademarks off and you have an airier foam that lets go of your shape the moment you move off it.
That's why I'd send a warm sleeper here first. Memory foam parks heat under your hips whatever the fabric over it is called, and there's none of it in this build. Fidgets win too: foam that releases quickly is foam you aren't wading out of when you turn over. Medium firm is where I start almost anybody who hasn't worked out what they like, and it's the grade that goes wrong for the fewest people.
One sheet of micro springs is doing all the spring work
Now the limits, in one go. All the spring content here sits in a single micro-spring sheet, and no count for it is published anywhere. Micro springs are padding with a grand name, as far as I'm concerned. No layer thickness is published either, so nothing tells you how much of the 24cm is comfort foam and how much is base. Nothing is claimed for the edge, and the care guide says to keep off it for long sits, so treat the perimeter as the soft spot if you share the bed. Ask Dreams for the count before you order if a number would settle you.
None of that moves my answer. Pocket springs in a roll are a good piece of engineering, and my gripe with boxed mattresses was always the price and the marketing wrapped round it. Here the money has gone into the layer you lie on, which is where I want it.
The roll gets it up the stairs, and 24cm keeps your own sheets
Buy it rolled. The pack is a shade over a metre long and just under 30kg, so a tight landing stops being the problem it is with a full double. The same mattress delivered flat costs the same with a much longer wait on it. Put someone on the far end: the care guide says two people, and the handles underneath are for steering and rotating, not carrying.
Open it, get the window up, and leave it 4 to 6 hours before you sleep on it. Give it up to 72 hours to come to full height; the roll creases go on their own, and the foam smell goes with a few days of airing. Don't judge it on night one, because the first fortnight tells you what you expected to hear.
It's an easy thing to live with. Twenty four centimetres is as shallow as this range gets, so an ordinary fitted sheet goes on first time. Sunday means clean sheets at mine, and the mattresses I hold a grudge against are the ones that turn that into a job. Check the pocket depth on yours if you buy the deep ones.
Give it a head to toe turn each week for three months, then one a month, and never flip it: there's one sleeping side. The zip on the cover is there to help build the mattress. It does not come off and it does not go in the wash, so blot spills as they happen and spot clean with soapy water. Keep it off a tired old base, because Hyde & Sleep's care guide says that can invalidate the guarantee. Read the 100-Night Comfort Guarantee before you order: you get a swap instead of your money returned, it only stands if a protector has been on from day one, and you pay for the collection.
What to buy instead
Only one bed in this range is a real alternative. If a properly firm bed is what you're after and you like memory foam's slow hold, the Hyde & Sleep Raspberry Rolled is the same price, the same 24cm and the same spring sheet, graded two steps firmer, with the extra warmth memory foam brings. Everybody else should buy the Blueberry, and buy it rolled.
