Why our sleep experts loved it
There's a refinement to the Hypnos Clinton Cotton Deluxe that you notice immediately. Even before you touch it, the mattress feels more special. The hand side-stitching, the smooth cotton cover, the mix of wool and spring, it's all so well composed. After a few nights sleeping on it though, I discovered that while the Clinton has quality in spades, it's also on the soft side. If you're a side sleeper, that will feel like plush luxury. If you sleep on your back or front, you might find it's not quite firm enough to keep you levelled out.
First impressions
The Clinton looks exactly how you'd expect from Hypnos: tidy, traditional and beautifully crafted. The cotton has a natural, unbleached texture to the surface. The hand side-stitching gives the look and feel of something handmade, rather than factory made. It's 26 cm deep and sits comfortably on the bed without overwhelming it. The quality of the finishing is obvious to see and to touch. It's got that natural fibre look and feel, with the hand-tufted detail that suggests a proper, long-lasting mattress. It's the kind of design that conveys care and craftsmanship immediately, before you even get in bed.
Construction
Internally, the Clinton Cotton Deluxe follows Hypnos's formula of natural fibres and precise springing. There are 1000 ReActivePro 6-turn pocket springs, heat-treated twice for extra resilience. They're individually responsive to movement and contour to your body with a gentle give. Around the edge there are three rows of firmer springs, for what Hypnos calls Triple Edge Protection. That keeps the mattress steady and prevents that roll-off feeling along the sides. It also means the whole surface area stays flatter and more evenly usable.
Above the springs are thick layers of wool and cotton. The cotton keeps the sleeping surface cool and breathable, while the British Red Tractor wool provides gentle cushioning and natural insulation. Together, they create a cosy breathable top that feels soft but still well supported underneath. Hypnos has also added Solotex, a recycled fibre with springy bounce. It helps improve the bounce-back of the mattress and resists flattening over time. The surface fabric is 100% unbleached cotton, with no chemical finishes or artificial shine. The result is a clean, honest feel that's a direct result of Hypnos's emphasis on natural comfort. And when it comes to the end of its life, all those materials are fully recyclable. It fits with the brand's broader message of sustainable comfort.
Comfort and feel
The Clinton Cotton Deluxe is marked as a medium, but it's actually softer than that in reality. Your first impression when you lie down is comfort, that lovely yielding top layer that draws you in. The cotton and wool give it a plush quality under the shoulders and hips, and it's instantly relaxing to lie on. The problem, after a few nights in, is that it didn't have quite enough firmness for me. As a side sleeper, you'll likely find the level of cushioning just right. It relieves pressure around the joints and prevents the shoulders from feeling pinched. But back and stomach sleepers will find it too soft. The hips sink in a little deeper than you want, and that throws your posture over the course of a long night.
It's not unsupportive, the ReActivePro springs do their job, but the overall impression is more comfort than correction. The Clinton is the sort of mattress that feels wonderfully luxurious to get into. But it's also the sort that may not suit those who like a flatter, more structured sleeping surface. Comfort and softness are two different things, and this edges too far into the latter for my tastes.
Temperature and breathability
If there's one thing the Clinton excels at, it's breathability. The combination of cotton, wool and Solotex means this is an incredibly breathable mattress. Even with a deep duvet on top, the bed never felt stifling or clammy. The airflow through the natural fillings ensures the temperature stays constant through the night. The wool helps regulate warmth in the winter, and the cotton wicks away moisture in the warmer months. It's the sort of mattress that always feels dry and fresh, which is exactly what you want from natural materials. If you overheat on memory foam beds, then it's a significant improvement.
Edge support and stability
The Triple Edge Protection system gives this mattress noticeable stability along the sides. I could sit or lie up against the edge without it feeling like it was dipping or tilting. The sort of edge-to-edge consistency that makes you feel confident sharing the bed, particularly in smaller sizes. The overall structure has good stability. Even though the top is soft, the underlying spring unit prevents any sagging or shifting. You can sense the engineering beneath the surface is solid, it's just wrapped in a softer comfort layer than expected.
Motion transfer
Movement isolation is very good. The individually housed pocket springs do a great job of containing motion. When my partner turned or got up, I could barely tell. The cotton and wool layers also help to absorb the smaller movements that do travel through the springs. It's not perfectly motionless, few natural fibre mattresses are, but it's more than good enough for restful sleep. As a couple, it's calm and stable.
Everyday experience
Living with the Clinton is simple. It's single sided, so you only need to rotate it rather than flipping it. The surface has maintained its shape well, and the tufts have remained firm and even. The cover looks just as crisp as it did on arrival. It's not a light mattress, but the handles are well placed and strong enough to rotate easily. Other than that, there's very little maintenance required. After several weeks, the surface still feels airy and comfortable, but I would have liked a little more resistance beneath the softness. It's a relaxing mattress, not a corrective one, and that's worth keeping in mind when deciding if it's the right mattress for you.
Who it suits
The Clinton Cotton Deluxe is ideal for side sleepers and anyone who wants a naturally soft, breathable mattress with a premium feel. It's great for those who value sustainable materials, traditional craftsmanship and gentle support. It's also a good choice for lighter sleepers who prefer that plush top feel but still want a supportive spring base. The wool and cotton combination also makes it exceptionally comfortable all year round. It's a luxury product that delivers on comfort over firmness, and for some, that's exactly the right balance.
Who it doesn't suit
Back and stomach sleepers will likely find it too soft. The hips sink more than ideal for alignment, and that will create mild stiffness over time. Heavier sleepers might also find that the mattress loses a little lift under pressure. The price point also feels a bit high for the level of firmness, you're paying for excellent materials and build, but not necessarily for orthopaedic-grade support. If you need more structure or prefer a firmer surface, then the Hypnos Halton Deluxe would be a better choice.
Verdict
The Hypnos Clinton Cotton Deluxe is a beautifully made mattress that demonstrates all the things that Hypnos does well: comfort, breathability and natural quality. The traceable wool, unbleached cotton and hand side-stitching give it real character. For side sleepers, it's near perfect, soft where it should be, cool and deeply comfortable. Back or stomach sleepers won't find enough firmness to keep them level, and that's the only real drawback. It's luxurious in feel but potentially priced a little high for what it offers in support. But it's an elegant, restful mattress with unmistakable Hypnos pedigree, and if you're the right sleep profile, it could be a lovely addition to your bedroom.
