Slumberland

Slumberland is one of the oldest and most prestigious mattress manufacturers in the UK having first been established in 1919 in Cambridgeshire. To this day, Slumberland remains one of the largest mattress manufacturers, offering an impressive range of products in pocket spring support layers accompanied by numerous upper comfort layers, primarily of foam and latex.

When it comes to price point, Slumberland aims to capture the mid-range price tier while still offering upper range quality. This is evident in the pocket spring support layers offered across the lineup, a support that tops the charts in terms of body contouring and pressure relief.

Flaxby

Flaxby mattresses are sold exclusively by the popular retailer, Dreams. The collection is a more up-market premium brand within the lineup and uses an impressive array of comfortable and soft materials in the upper layers of their mattresses to ensure a natural and comfortable sleeping surface. Flaxby are focussed toward ensuring a greener and fresher sleep that is more environmentally friendly. That’s why they utilise 100% recyclable spring systems and natural fibres to help safeguard the environment for future generations.

A feature unique to Flaxby includes their new all-seasons lineup which sees a two sided mattress which has different comfort layers on each side, giving a “warmer” side and a “cooler” side.

Slumberland Owner Satisfaction

Slumberland mattresses are well reviewed, expected given the brands huge selling power. When it comes to customer feedback, reviews are positive with thousands of reviews and happy customers. People particularly enjoyed the luxurious qualities offered from such a reasonably priced mattress with those customers believing they get very good value for money. Other positives come in the form of the support layer, offering full body contouring and pressure relieving qualities that offer a degree of orthopedic comfort that protects and helps against back pain.

Slumberland Supportiveness

When it comes to supportiveness, Slumberland deals almost exclusively with pocket spring base layers. I bring up pocket springs a lot because they are the true mark of a good quality support structure, they generally perform better in tests than open coil traditional springs and reflex foam. Pocket springs offer, on average, better support and better durability, lasting longer than competitors. Slumberland has core parts of their lineup dedicated to orthopedic support which will prove ideal for those looking for additional back and neck support. In terms of firmness, we see a variety of different tensions that will ensure there is something for everyone in the lineup. Recommendations typically see those with back or neck pain navigate toward firmer mattresses, accompanied by back sleepers and heavier weighted people. For those who sleep on their side or are of lower to average weight should perhaps consider a medium tension mattress. With support, it’s all relative and subjective to each person, so consider each mattress on its own individual merit before purchase.

Slumberland Durability

When it comes to durability, Slumberland makes some impressive strides with their lineup. Thanks to the pocket spring support layer you get a better base layer acting as a foundation for everything that sits above. What separates Slumberland from many other manufacturers is that most of the lineup features a 5-10 year guarantee. The guarantee is a testament to the manufacturer's belief in the product they are selling and how long it will typically last. Lots of the industry relies on a 1 year guarantee and helps demonstrate the level of quality offered within Slumberland mattresses. Combine this with the double sided nature of much of the range and you actually get twice the surface area of many competitors, further expanding on longevity and durability.

Flaxby Owner Satisfaction

Flaxby mattresses are some of the better reviewed in the industry achieving impressive scores on a continual basis that generally outperform the competition. Owners are particularly overjoyed because Flaxby is offering the great comfort and support that we all love but introduce multiple new features that help provide an enhanced sleep experience. Customers particularly enjoyed the all-season range which gave people a deep sleep all year round that kept them cool in summer and warm in winter, the perfect combination.

Customers also enjoyed the natural cotton, wool & hemp fillings that come as standard on many in the lineup with particular attention being drawn to the fantastic 5 year guarantee on most models.

Flaxby Supportiveness

Flaxby mattresses have a great deal of supportiveness thanks to the Cortec™ and DNAir pocket spring systems on offer within the lineup. The Flaxby range is what we consider to be a traditional lineup with typical high quality manufacturing processes that result in luxurious and supportive mattresses. Pocket springs have generally remained unrivaled over the years and are my own personal favourite support layer when it comes to offering good tension for back and neck support. Many of the products on offer are available with multiple tension options which means you have a choice around how firm you would like the product to be. Depending on how you sleep (front, back, side) to how much you weigh are all determinations when choosing the right supportiveness.

Flaxby Durability

Flaxby mattresses will typically perform better in terms of true longevity than many other mattress suppliers due to their large investment in good quality pocket spring support layers combined with tried and tested comfort layers of wool and silk. The combination of these materials gives customers confidence but also the retailer, Dreams. This is evident in their backing of this product lineup with the impressive 5 year guarantee that ensures long standing support in the event of any manufacturing defects. The price point for Flaxby may often price certain people out of the market who are looking for something a little cheaper, however, when you consider the lifespan and the cost per night of sleep as a result, the Flaxby offers a fantastic opportunity for sleepers thanks to its durability and comfort.

I've only had this mattress about 3 weeks so don't feel I can give 5 stars yet - I may update in 6 months. It has improved in comfort significantly from the first week. The comfort rating is what I would rate it now, not what I would have given if I had reviewed this after the first night. Plus points: - double sided so hopefully it will last longer than my last mattress. Most of the other mattresses available were single sided. - light enough for me to turn and flip on my own (there was no point in it being double-sided if it was too heavy for me to lift). As a middle-aged 5ft2in woman this was the main reason I choose this mattress over others. I recommend going into a store and trying to lift mattresses if this is important to you as a lot of other mattresses were very heavy. - pocket sprung and no memory foam - a plus point if you don't like overheating in the summer. - reasonable price Negative points: - you can't sit on the edge of the mattress - this isn't very important to me, but might be important to others. It's fine for getting into and out of bed, but the edges do not have extra support like some mattresses and sink when you sit on them. - breaking in the mattress to achieve a comfortable sleep took around 2 weeks (although I may be breaking it in for a while yet as I still have some rotating and turning to do). The first few days were very uncomfortable, so much so, that I was regretting my decision. However, I had been warned that mattresses can take a while to break in, and had the 40 day trial to fall back on if necessary, so I persevered. Initially the padding feels very pronounced and solid - more like a very firm mattress than a medium. I also thought I could feel the 'tufts' as small hard lumps. I did not sleep well on it the first couple of nights and had back ache, so I looked up some ways of speeding up the 'breaking in' process. I crawled around on it several times a day and resisted getting a topper (which slows down the breaking in process), although I did sleep on top of a doubled up duvet a couple of times in the first week. I'm happy to say that, 3 weeks on, I'm sleeping well, have no back ache and I'm not noticing the tufts anymore. I don't feel like I would need a topper now and would say the mattress is medium/firm at the moment. The area where I'm sleeping is softer than other areas of the mattress, so I think it probably will be a medium as advertised once it is fully broken in. Overall, I am happy I bought this mattress - just be warned that the breaking-in process means you may be in for some uncomfortable nights to begin with. It wouldn't be suitable if you like to use the edge of your mattress as a place to sit.

Ordered this without reading any reviews, recommendations as there were none. Tried it out in store and it felt firm enough- just what we were after. Firmer as it is still new so time will tell how it ages. Firm is just that, wonder what extra firm feels like! Support is great, the top layer doesn’t have much give. The brilliant thing is that it can be flipped over unlike the hybrid lot. The winter side is definitely warm, the summer side noticeably cooler to the touch so I can’t wait to try it when it gets warmer. This is a plus and for the price I would so far recommend his mattress. Has 2 handles on either side and an 8 year guarantee so what’s not to like? I only hope the guarantee is what it says it is

Adding this review as Bensons couldn't be bothered to reply, Dear Benson for Beds, Thank you for today's delivery and the initial bed buying in store at Truro. So disappointed today on the arrival of our new mattress and why yourselves would send an £800 mattress in such a poor condition. The plastic covering was covered in a black storage dust, this black dust ends on the stair carpets, walls, landing carpet and bedroom carpets. Your delivery guys said to watch the black dust and to wash hands before handling the mattress itself, so equally disappointed following this advice to then find even more black marks on the mattress itself. This must be an ongoing issue and lets the whole process down?

I Bought this mattress for a vintage bed with oak wooden head and foot. I never thought about the depth of the mattress when I chose it. When it was delivered it was taken upstairs and put on the bed. I was surprised to see that it had come right to the top of the foot board. I removed the plastic covering and made the bed up with sheets and duvet etc, which of course made it even higher. To get into bed I have to take a little leap. But the mattress is very comfy - firm but comfy that was just what I wanted. It has a gorgeous rich fabric cover on it and I would highly recommend. I just wish it had been a little less deep for my bed.

Very comfortable, good quality, just what we needed to replace our conventional pocket sprung mattress. We liked that on delivery it was vacuum packed which made it easy to move upstairs. Once opened it took a couple of hours to get to its proper shape, and there was a little bit of a chemical smell for a few days, but not overwhelming. This is the 3rd mattress we have bought in 10 years and we have had comfort issues with all of them except this one. We are really pleased with the comfort, quality and the value for money. We would not hesitate to make a recommendation of this product. We love it.

We purchased the Flaxby 14450 pillow top mattress from Dreams after trying out the range of Flaxby mattresses in store. We opted for the Superking size with the split medium/soft support and the zipped option (essentially two singles joined together). I prefer the medium support whereas my partner likes the softer feel. Bear in mind, these are heavy mattresses and having the split mattress option makes it far easier to rotate them, which you will need to do weekly for the first 3 months (then monthly thereafter). It has taken a long time for the mattress to fully bed in and feel comfortable to sleep on. If you're considering this mattress, be prepared for a full 6-8 weeks break in period to allow the materials to loosen up and conform to your body. When new, it felt very stiff with the sensation you're lying on top of the mattress, with not much give and with minimal support. My partner quickly got used to sleeping on her softer mattress, whereas with my medium feel mattress, I experienced lower back pain on and off for the first 4-5 weeks. The Dreams staff advised that the Flaxby mattresses do take a while to break in and conform to your body. Here's some tips that have worked well for us and are worth considering: Mattress support - this mattress really does deserve a quality bed base, preferably a pocket spring divan base. We initially used our old Superking bed frame with sprung slats. However, although the 14450 mattress is a deep mattress and should in theory work well on any bed base, we found that it did not gel that well with the sprung slats, as the mattress tended to sag slightly. We have now switched to a sprung divan base and it's made a big difference to the feel, comfort and support of the mattress. Pillows - we initially used our Tempur cloud pillows with the Flaxby but we have since switched to Levitex sleep posture pillows (we opted for the small size). This has made a world of difference - no more neck and back pain! Duvets - we've always liked having our own single duvets rather than sharing a larger duvet so we can better control our body temperatures. My partner uses a weighted duvet whereas I switched to a wool filled duvet. The Flaxby mattresses do offer better temperature control compared to our old Tempur mattress. It is still worth investing in a quality duvet to really get the best sleeping experience.

My last bed was a supersized king divan style base with an orthopaedic mattress which I had for the last 15 years and it was a bit too large for the flat I moved into a few years ago so thought it time to change over to a double. I have always wanted a chunky wooden framed bed with a nice soft mattress & finally decided to take the plunge and ordered a frame off the web in the same style as my other bedroom furniture and then started looking for a mattress that I liked and found this one Dreams which sounded just right. I can tell you after spending 15 years sleeping on what might as well have been a rock the new mattress is like sleeping on a cloud. The mattress gives me a tremendous amount of support, yet it has a nice soft finish to it that I just sink into when I get into bed at night. It is beautifully finished with handles on all four sides making it easy to rotate even though it is quite a heavy mattress. My only wish is that I had spotted the Moore Wooden chunky bedframe on the Dreams website before I had ordered the frame that I did because that looks a lot sturdier that the one I bought is. I do have one small problem though and that is that it isn’t only me that has fallen in love with the new mattress, so have the cats who spend the bulk of the day relaxing on it and get a bit disgruntled when it comes to bed time and I have to get into it but they soon find their way back onto it when they think I have fallen asleep. So it seems that it isn’t only me who now get a great night’s sleep on my new 6500 DNAir mattress! But prehaps I should have gone for the king size to accomopdate all of us.

I did the dreams exchange as the Tempur elite medium was far too firm as I have widespread arthritis and fibromyalgia. So glad I waited 7 weeks for the swap to this Harrison Spinks Flaxby 11150. Its all natural fibre fillings and sprung plus eco friendly with the added bonus of being handmade by British crafts people up in Yorkshire. The difference it has made is huge, now I sleep far better. Even though I opted for the soft double mattress it has 11150 springs in it so there is alot of support and it is not like a cheap flimsy soft mattress. It is more like a medium at first but is a wonderful mattress, I highly recommend it and yes its worth the money, even better at sales time. It has an odour at first, just open window and air mattress if poss, it soon fades, but at least the odour is natural. It is a dual season mattress, one side for autumn/winter the other for spring summer so thats a bonus as I can be a hot sleeper. It comes with a guarantee and clear instructions for rotating & turning for the first number of weeks especially (it has 8 handles for turning) , worth following as this mattress is top quality, you look after it and it will look after you for many years.Buy a good quality mattress protector as the mattress does have the dipping yarned buttons, wont interfere with your sleep though! I love it and so glad I did the swap as its for me i top quality, highly recommend this and a thankyou to the team at Dreams on Basford bank roundabout in Stoke On Trent.

Don’t buy a bed online! Two years ago we replaced our right year old bed with a Simba mattress (one of these online ones that comes vacuum packed). We both get hot at night and this memory foam didn’t help. It started to sag badly, I ended up under the chiro and I complained to Simba who replaced the mattress free of charge. New mattress started sagging with three months and I’m still suffering with a bad back under the chiro. As my back wasn’t improving the chiro suggested the mattress may not suit me and perhaps I needed something more supportive so in desperation (and really not wanting to spend money on another mattress so soon) we went to Dreams. Best thing we ever did. Back MASSIVELY better after just one night. Sales Manager Amy spent a lot of time going through our options. New bed creates less condensation in our room and we aren’t hot at night. Worth every penny, wish I’d done it sooner and I’ll never ever buy a bed online again. There maybe a X number of days you can try it (on Simba and Dreams) but the reality is very few of us will go to the effort of sending it back unless it’s really bad. You just live with it. Don’t make the same mistake I did. The bed is also British made with all natural fibres. No gels or foams. LOVE it!
