Why our sleep experts loved it
Shire’s Worcester Crib 5 Contract Waterproof Mattress is one of those products that tells you exactly what it is from the name alone. It is a UK made, safety compliant, waterproof, contract style mattress designed for higher risk settings like hospitality, student lets, and care environments. I have not been able to view or test this in person, Archers is in Scotland so this review is based on the published specifications, the brand’s positioning, and the customer feedback provided. And yes, I have opinions, because this is a very particular type of mattress.
Design and features
The headline feature is Crib 5 compliance to BS7177 medium hazard, which is the point if you are furnishing a property where fire performance is a requirement rather than a nice to have. If you need that certification, you buy for compliance first and comfort second. The waterproof cover is the other core selling point. For real life use in kids rooms, care settings, or rentals, it can be genuinely practical, and one reviewer specifically called out how useful it was for a child who is not fully toilet trained yet.
Where I’m far less impressed is the underlying build. This is an open coil spring system, with the usual rod edge wire for perimeter stability. Open coil is robust, sure, but it is also the most old fashioned, least refined spring format still commonly sold. In 2026 it reads like a mattress that time forgot. It is functional, but it is not sophisticated, not pressure relieving, and not what I would call a modern sleep upgrade.
Mattress comfort
On paper, comfort here is going to be firm and fairly flat. Open coil mattresses tend to give a broad, general support rather than targeted contouring, and the waterproof cover can add a slightly tighter surface feel compared to a stretch knit fabric. Breathability is mentioned, and it can help to a point, but waterproofing and airflow are always a compromise. You might get a cooler surface than fully sealed plastic style covers, but it still will not feel as naturally breathable as a standard fabric top with a good comfort layer.
One customer called it a terrific buy and said it was comfortable so far, another said the mattress is not amazing but adequate. That is exactly the range I would expect. It does what it needs, but it is not going to deliver that plush, hotel boutique feel people now associate with better hybrids and pocket sprung designs.
Suitability
This firm tension is best for back sleepers and some stomach sleepers who want a steadier, more level surface. If you sleep on your side, or you have a more pronounced hip and shoulder shape, I would be cautious. Side sleeping typically needs more give in the comfort layer to avoid pressure build up, and open coil plus a firmer build is not famous for gentle cradle.
For commercial buyers, the Worcester makes more sense. If you need Crib 5, want waterproofing, and prioritise durability and easy maintenance, it ticks boxes. For domestic buyers, I think you can do better unless your main goal is protecting the mattress from accidents. And even then, I would usually rather buy a nicer mattress and add a high quality waterproof protector.
The verdict
I can see why this exists, and for B2B it has a clear purpose. It is compliant, practical, and built around risk reduction. But aesthetically and technically, it feels like an early 2000s leftover, the kind of mattress you point to when explaining how far the industry has moved on. It works, it is not pretty, and in my view it is not very good at the actual luxury of sleep. If you are buying for compliance and wipe clean convenience, it is a sensible option. If you are buying for comfort, pressure relief, or a modern feel, I would keep looking.
