Why our sleep experts loved it
The ASC Capri Mattress is a very traditional, no-nonsense British mattress on paper, and I mean that as both a compliment and a warning. I’m reviewing this one purely from the published specifications and the real-world customer feedback provided, because I haven’t been able to view or test it in person. Archers is based in Scotland, and I did not have the opportunity to try this model in-store. So this is an online, spec-led review, not a home trial.
Design and features
The Capri is built around a 12.5 gauge open coil spring unit, which is one of the firmest wire thicknesses you’ll commonly see in this price and style bracket. In my experience, 12.5 gauge open coil is chosen for sturdiness and a flatter, firmer feel rather than any sort of tailored contouring. It’s the kind of support system that tends to suit people who want a mattress to “hold them up” rather than “hug them in”.
The rod-edge perimeter support is another old-school feature that usually improves edge stability, especially compared with basic open coil mattresses that can feel a bit “roll-off” near the sides. But it’s worth being clear that this is still an open coil. You’re not getting the more precise, point-to-point response you’d expect from a pocket spring system, and motion transfer is typically higher. If you share a bed and one of you is a restless sleeper, I’d go into this with realistic expectations.
The cover fabric is the most modern part of the spec. Tencel is genuinely a good choice for moisture management and a fresher sleep surface, and I’m broadly positive about it as a fibre. But I’m also cautious. Cover materials can help with temperature regulation at the surface, yet they cannot magically turn a firm, robust spring core into a cloud-like, pressure-relieving sleep. Marketing often overplays the “microclimate” story, and I don’t think it should be the deciding factor here.
Mattress comfort
This is described as firm yet comfortable, and that reads true for the construction. Expect a supportive, resilient feel, likely with less initial sink than many bed-in-a-box hybrids or memory foam styles. If you like a mattress that feels stable from the first moment you lie down, the Capri’s core spec points firmly in that direction.
But comfort is personal, and with a firmer open coil, comfort tends to depend on your sleeping position and body shape more than people realise. Without deeper comfort layers that allow the shoulder and hip to settle, firm mattresses can feel “fine” for 20 minutes and then become noticeably unforgiving overnight. That’s the trade-off with this sort of build. It’s supportive, but it may not be kind.
I do like that it’s a flip-and-rotate mattress. In my experience, double-sided builds can wear more evenly if people actually maintain them. And that last part matters. The Capri asks more of the owner. If you ignore the turning routine, you may lose comfort consistency quicker than you’d like.
Suitability
I’m going to be blunt because it helps shoppers. The Capri’s firm tension is best for back sleepers, and it can also work for some front sleepers who want a flatter plane and don’t want their hips dipping. For those sleepers, a firm open coil can feel reassuring, and the rod-edge can help the mattress feel stable right to the edge.
But I don’t think this is a smart pick for most side sleepers, especially if you have a curvier, hourglass shape or any sensitivity in the shoulder. Side sleeping usually needs more pressure relief at the contact points. Without enough sink at the hip and shoulder, you can end up twisting your spine slightly all night. And that’s when people wake with numb arms, sore hips, or that stiff, grumpy lower back feeling.
If you’re lighter in body weight and you sleep on your side, a firm mattress can feel even firmer. That’s a big deal. Heavier sleepers sometimes compress the comfort materials enough to find a “sweet spot”, but lighter side sleepers often can’t access that comfort at all.
What customers thought
Customer reviews are always about context. People buying a traditional, firm open coil mattress are often replacing an older, sagging mattress and they want something that feels stable again. When reviews mention feeling better supported, or feeling like the mattress is “solid”, that aligns strongly with the 12.5 gauge spring choice and the reinforced edge.
On the flip side, when negative feedback appears for mattresses like this, it’s usually about firmness, pressure points, and motion transfer. Those aren’t “faults” so much as predictable outcomes of the design. And that’s why I’d rather be honest upfront than pretend this suits everyone. If you want a gentler, more contouring feel, this is the wrong direction.
The verdict
Based on specifications alone, the ASC Capri Mattress looks like a robust, traditional, firm UK-made option with a sensible, breathable Tencel cover and a reinforced perimeter for better edge security. I like the straightforwardness. I also like that it’s designed to be flipped and rotated, because that’s often a sign the manufacturer expects it to handle real use rather than relying on soft top layers that mask wear.
But I’m sceptical about it being broadly comfortable for side sleepers, and I’d actively steer most side sleepers elsewhere. This is a mattress for people who know they like firm, who mainly sleep on their back, and who are willing to do the maintenance. If that’s you, the Capri could be a very satisfying, good-value workhorse. If you’re chasing plush comfort or pressure relief, I wouldn’t gamble on it.
