Why Our Sleep Experts Loved It

becky says

We’ve got a Millbrook Smooth Tech Luxury 5000 Pocket Mattress on the cards today and what a fantastic offering from the popular and prestigious manufacturer. For those not in the know, Millbrook Beds are well established in the arena, selling primarily higher quality products in the mid-tier price point. They represent a great opportunity for those that are looking for a more premium nights sleep and the Smooth Tech 5000 Pocket takes that and dials it all the way up to 100. Let’s jump into what this one is all about.

First, the support layer; 5000 premium pocketed springs that are housed in their own individual fabric pockets, all ready to contour to your each and every movement. Available in a soft-medium tension, these springs will best suit side sleepers and will allow you to fully sink your hips and shoulders into the depths of the mattress while you sleep. Back sleepers may be satisfied with this degree of tension also, though should consider something firmer if they are heavier than standard as the sinkage may otherwise be suitable.

Onto the comfort layer which sits at the top of the mattress and you get natural fillings of wool and cotton, available in a deep layer that proves to be both breathable and luxurious. This type of mix works well for many people that get too hot at night and require something more ‘all-season’ that will allow them to sleep deeper and longer. It has been an industry trick for decades to not be specific about the exact GSM of the fillings in mattresses, to help create a bubble of uncertainty. This isn’t changing with the Smooth Tech Luxury 5000 unfortunately, but, just look at the size of the thing, you can see the sheer volume of fillings from a mile away and it is clear that the quality and structure of the mattress will keep you comfortable for years to come.

Finally, you get the coveted and market leading 10-year warranty that pairs with a 60-night trial to ensure customer satisfaction in the immediate while also protecting your wallet for the future.

Reviews are still fairly early into the lifecycle of the product meaning that we won’t have long term reviews for a while, however, those that have received the mattress do indeed reflect fondly on it.

Key Performance Indicators KPI question mark

Our Key Performance Indicators are produced using a combination of specification-heavy algoritmic data points and user reviews. For example, a firm pocket spring support layer is more breathable and offers better back support but may prove unsuitable for side sleepers, the reverse is true for a soft-medium tension reflex foam support layer. This is one of 100+ datapoints considered when generating the below ratings.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Ease of Use

  • Turning handles
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses typically need to be rotated frequently and having turning handles can be massively beneficial, particularly in larger sizes which can become fairly heavy.

Odour

  • Initial Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.

What Makes The Millbrook Smooth Tech Luxury 5000 Pocket Mattress Great?

Includes a 60 Night Sleep Trial: swap with any other Millbrook mattress if you don’t love it!

Sleep trials are a fantastic pro-consumer option that allow you to try-while-you-buy. It's the best of both worlds, you get to order your mattress from the comfort of your own home while having much of the same flexibility of an instore purchase where you get to try out the product and make sure it is for you. Terms and conditions vary retailer to retailer, but ultimately you will be able to swap this mattress for an alternative to find the right solution for you.

Revolutionary Smooth Tech™ technology gives you a cozy sleeping surface

Integrated Nemoflex™ technology offering superb edge-to-edge support

The supportive edge system is designed to prevent roll off while you sleep while also creating a safe and supportive edge that will avoid dipping and increase durability.

Nemoflex™ is made up of 200 repurposed plastic bottles

The bottles are collected from recycling centres and then cleaned and sterilised before being used to create the mattress. The mattress is then covered with a special fabric that is designed to wick away moisture and keep the mattress clean.

Natural fillings of wool and cotton bring you supreme cosiness and comfort

There are many benefits to cotton in mattresses, including its hypoallergenic properties, its ability to regulate body temperature, and its breathability. Cotton is also a very durable fabric, so it can withstand a lot of wear and tear.

5000 pocket springs that mold to your body giving you superb support!

Pocket springs are always my default go-to when it comes to recommendations surrounding support systems. See, pocket springs just do it better thanks to their individual and pocketed nature they are able to contour to your body better, reacting to each and every movement your body makes and allowing for full zoned support. Generally perform better than poorer reflex foam and open coil spring units.

Soft to medium firmness - not too soft or too hard

Single-sided - no need to turn over, just rotate with the 8 turning handles!

Non turn mattresses have a few benefits, most importantly that they do not need to be flipped, saving time effort and energy that can be better focussed toward getting a good nights sleep. Do be aware however that you should still be rotating your mattress in line with the manufacturers guidelines for the product.

Free from foam and chemical treatments so it is safe for everyone

Foam free models are becoming increasingly popular as part of an anti-foam initiative been driven by many of the legacy builders of traditional mattresses. Foam has many positive properties but can often cause overheating thanks to poor breathability that this product does not have issue with.

100% recyclable

A product that is 100% recyclable is considered better for the environment and goes a long way to reducing your personal waste. Recyclable products and materials are able to be repackaged and remade into new products.

Packaged in recyclable Sugar Cane plastic

Easy to care for: non-removable cover so vacuum to clean

Mattress depth: 33cm

33cm of depth is not in itself a good enough indicator of quality to blindly state one way or another. That said, generally speaking, deeper mattresses tend to be that way due to the excess of deep comfort layers which is typically a good thing. 33cm is right on the edge of requiring more specialist deep sheets which can be found alongside normal sheets in most stores.

10 Year Warranty

A mattress warranty covers physical defects in a mattress, such as sagging over a certain threshold when not in use. Most mattress warranties last between 5-20 years, but as it is recommended to replace your mattress every 7-10 years this warranty will cover the life of your mattress.

Made in the UK

These are made and manufactured in the UK, meaning that they all meet the same exceptional quality and durability that we expect from genuine UK manufacturing.

Wool

Luxury wool, typically found in mattresses in a shredded and felted capacity is an upholstery fibre often used as a top comfort layer, but sometimes found further down in those mattress layers as part of the support structure

Cotton

A cotton mattress cover of fairly good quality and often preferable to damask covers and weaved covers. Your preference will vary though.

Pocket springs

Pocket springs are like natures own springy piece of comfort, except they are not from nature. Alas, pocket springs are a very good part of a mattress and often found in the more premium models. Lower quality products will frequently use open coil spring setups, where pocket springs house each spring in a tiny pocket for additional stability and continued support. Pocket spring typically lasts longer than open coil due to this.

Soft to Medium

A Medium firmness mattress is the most common build offered due to the range of suitability offered in such a mattress. This type of mattress will be better suited toward averagely weighted people, while lighter people should opt for a medium-light, and heavier people considering a medium-firm.

33cm deep

The industry standard for mattress depth is 7 inches, with most offering a comfortable 10 to 14 inches. Generally, the higher the load, the deeper it needs to be. But quality is important as a well-built 10-inch mattress can be equally as comfortable and supportive as a budget 12-inch mattress. This 13 inch mattress sits at the higher end of the scale, worth consideration for those requiring support for higher weights.

Reinforced mattress edge

One of the most common complaints in the industry is against mattresses with a weak mattress edge. It can often result in the user feeling like they are going to fall off the side of the bed and bed avoided. This mattress has a reinforced edge, something that helps ensure that particular scenario is avoided when you get close to a mattress edge while sleeping.

Knitted Cover

It is common in the industry to have a knitted cover, these covers can come in a variety of patterns but are typically hard wearing and do not present problems for consumers.

Single-sided

Single sided means only one side is comfy. Positives are you only need to rotate the mattress occassionaly rather than the more cumbersome rotate and flip. Downside is the lifespan of the product may suffer as a result, only marginal, but worth mentioning.

Includes turning handles

Oh turning handles are pointless I hear you say. Just try flipping and turning this product without handles. It can be a pain. Remember that mattresses should be both rotated and flipped frequently, not a problem if you are opting for a sinle, but those doubles and kings can get heavy. Handles are very good.

Handcrafted in the UK

Handcrafted in the UK means that the product is built here, by people being paid a fair and honest wage using certified and safe products of good quality and construction. UK manufacturing is some of th best in the world and all of that is reflected in this product

Approved by the National Bed Federation

The NBF is one of the most prestigious awarding federations in the industry, helped slightly by the fact that it is one of the only, however, it is still a great source of comfort knowing that this product holds approval by the team
