Why our sleep experts loved it
Shopping for a firm mattress online can feel like a leap of faith, and that’s exactly the context for this review. I haven’t had the opportunity to test the Willow and Eve Bed Co Ortho Support Mattress in person, mainly because Archers is based in Scotland, and I’m working from the published specs and real customer feedback rather than a showroom lie down or a home trial. With that said, I’ve been in the mattress industry for a decade and I’ve read enough build sheets to know what tends to translate well in real bedrooms, and what tends to disappoint.
Design and features
This is a very traditional orthopaedic style mattress built around a 12.5 gauge open coil spring unit. That gauge is firmly on the stiff end of the scale, so the intention is obvious. This is about holding you up, not letting you sink in. Inside, you’ve got hourglass shaped springs linked together with spiral wires, which is a classic budget friendly construction that can feel surprisingly supportive at first. It’s finished with hypo allergenic white fibre fillings and a soft stretch knit cover, which should help it feel less stark than some firm mattresses that come across as almost board like.
It’s also double sided, which I genuinely like. Being able to flip and rotate gives you a better shot at even wear, and if you actually keep up with it, you can often squeeze more consistent comfort out of an entry level mattress. There’s also a rod edge wire around the perimeter, designed to help reduce border breakdown. On paper that sounds reassuring, but in practice I still find open coil mattresses tend to lose their crisp edge feel sooner than people expect.
Mattress comfort
This mattress is going to feel firm, and not in the fashionable “firm but cushioned” way. It’s a straighter, more old school firmness where you lie on top of the mattress rather than settling into it. The stretch knit fabric will add a bit of softness on first contact, but the fillings are fibre based, so don’t expect the kind of pressure relief you’d get from memory foam or a more sophisticated hybrid build.
My honest take is that it will suit people who actively dislike sink and want their mattress to feel stable and simple. But if you’re hoping for plush comfort on top of strong support, I don’t think this construction delivers that. And while the rod edge aims to improve edge to edge support, I’m sceptical that it will feel properly sturdy if you sit on the side a lot, especially over time.
Suitability
This firm tension will best suit back sleepers and some stomach sleepers. If you sleep on your side, especially with a curvier or hourglass shape, I’d be cautious. Side sleepers typically need more give at the shoulder and hip to keep the spine neutral, and a 12.5 gauge open coil tends to push back rather than mould. You might end up with pressure points, or you’ll find yourself changing position just to get comfortable.
The customer reviews do paint a fairly positive picture for the price, and they’re often in contexts that make sense for this type of mattress. Guest rooms, kids rooms, and value driven purchases. People describe it as very comfortable for the money, well made, and several mention great sleep. One buyer even liked it enough to buy another for their elderly mum, which suggests the firmness and stability can be a real win for some bodies. But there are also service related complaints around delivery issues with a divan base, which isn’t the mattress itself, still it’s part of the buying experience and worth keeping in mind.
The verdict
I don’t love this kind of mattress construction, and I’m not going to pretend I do. The double sided design is a genuine plus, and the price seems fair, and plenty of customers are clearly happy with it. But open coil is not something I’m ever going to get behind as a first choice, especially for anyone with aches, pressure point sensitivity, or side sleeping habits. Edge support also tends to be the quiet compromise in builds like this, no matter what the perimeter wire promises.
If you are a dedicated back sleeper who wants a firm, straightforward mattress, and you’re shopping with a tight budget, this could be a sensible buy. But if comfort means contouring and pressure relief, I’d keep looking, even if it costs a bit more. Your mileage may vary, and with this one, it really will.
