Why our sleep experts loved it
The Willow & Eve Bed Co. Cool Memory Dual Seasons Mattress is one of those value models that looks tempting on paper. You get memory foam, a medium firm feel, and a proper two sided build, which is genuinely rare at this end of the market. My review is based on the published specs and brand information rather than hands on testing. I also did not get the chance to try it in store, partly because Archers is up in Scotland and it is not practical for me to pop in. So this is a spec led assessment from someone who has spent the last decade pulling mattresses apart on paper and in real life, and spotting where the compromises usually sit.
Design and features
The headline is an open coil spring unit paired with a layer of temperature sensitive memory foam. Open coil is durable enough for occasional use, and it keeps costs down, but it is not a premium support system. The hourglass springs are linked together, so when one spring compresses it encourages the next to move as well. That can mean a more general bounce rather than targeted support. There is rod edge wiring around the perimeter, which I do like. It typically helps the mattress hold its shape and gives a steadier feel when you sit on the side. The upholstery is a soft stretch knit, which should help the foam respond more easily rather than feeling trapped under a stiff cover. You also get hypo allergenic fibre layers, which is a sensible, fuss free comfort filler for most homes.
The best design decision here is that it is dual sided. Most memory foam mattresses at this price are one sided and you just rotate. Being able to flip as well as rotate usually improves long term wear, especially with open coil where body impressions can become noticeable faster. If you are the sort of person who actually will flip a mattress a few times a year, this feature matters.
Mattress comfort
Memory foam is doing a lot of the comfort heavy lifting. On a medium firm tension, you should get that gentle contouring at the shoulders and hips, without the whole bed turning into a sinkhole. But open coil underneath changes the character of the foam. Instead of feeling sharply mapped to your body, it often feels like foam on top of a more old school springy base. Some people love that because it feels familiar and less restrictive. Others buy memory foam specifically to avoid that shared bounce.
One customer review mentions a grandson sleeping on it and having a comfortable, good night. That fits the pattern I see with this type of mattress. It tends to suit lighter bodies and occasional use really well, where you want instant comfort without paying for a more advanced spring unit.
Suitability
I agree with the medium firm positioning for side and back sleeping if you are average weight, with a caveat. Side sleepers who carry more shape through the hips and shoulders might find it a touch firm, especially if they like deeper pressure relief. Back sleepers are where I get more sceptical. Back sleeping is not just about firmness, it is about contouring and maintaining the natural curve of the spine. Pocket springs generally do that better because they respond independently. With open coil, support can feel more flat and more reactive, so you may not get the same tailored hold through the lumbar area. If back support is your priority, I would personally spend around another £50 and move into an entry level pocket sprung mattress.
This one makes most sense for a spare room, a teenager, or anyone wanting a budget friendly mattress with a bit of memory foam comfort and the practicality of flipping. For couples who are sensitive to movement, I would be cautious because open coil tends to transfer more motion.
The verdict
I like the idea of the Cool Memory Dual Seasons mattress more than I like the support system it is built on. The memory foam and two sided design are strong positives, and it is refreshing to see those features kept affordable. But open coil is still open coil, and I do not think it is the right base if you want properly targeted support, especially for back sleeping or for heavier bodies. If your budget is tight and you want a medium firm feel with some contouring, it is a decent, honest option. If you can stretch a little further, I would do it and choose pocket springs, because that upgrade is usually where you actually feel the difference night after night.
