Why our sleep experts loved it
There's no getting around it; mattresses are a major investment. If you live in a small space or just don't have the space for another piece of furniture, you might be anxious about purchasing a new mattress online. But it can also be a great opportunity to grab an affordable, high-quality bed that will last for years to come. The Silentnight Lift Renew 1200 Pocket Mattress combines the best of what makes a good mattress with a better than expected price point that helps create a product that should appeal to most, even those on a tight budget.
I got hands-on with the Lift Renew 1200 and the first thing I noticed was how 'normal' it feels in a good way, no weird wobble, no overly squishy top that makes you feel like you're sinking into a pit. Running my hand over the cover and pressing down through the top, you can feel that latex layer pushing back quickly rather than slowly melting like memory foam does.
A pocket mattress like the Silentnight Lift Renew is one where multiple layers of fabric are sewn into the sides of a spring unit, creating individual pockets of springs that have great support and good body contouring capabilities. These springs are one of the better options available on the market, outperforming reflex foam and open coil options consistently. That said, 1200 springs is solid, but it's not the highest count you'll see at this sort of price, so if you're the type who wants that super 'fine-tuned' feel, there are denser spring units out there.
If you're looking for a pocket mattress that offers plenty of support for all types of sleepers, this one is a great choice. The Lift Renew 1200 has a soft, latex foam top layer that'll conform to your body for maximum support and pressure relief. I really like latex, it has many of the same body moulding properties of traditional memory foam but with the added benefit of remaining cool and breathable, allowing deeper sleep. When I lay on it on my back, it felt nicely buoyant, my hips didn't dip and I didn't get that stuck-in-the-bed feeling you can get with deeper memory foam.
The bottom layer is made from a durable, tight wound pocket spring as mentioned above. These springs will stand up to plenty of use. This mattress has a medium firmness level and good bounce to it that has plenty of body contouring support. Side sleepers will appreciate the good amount of sinkage allowing for your hip and shoulder blades to fall into the mattress rather than risk levitating above. Back and stomach sleepers too should see sufficient support thanks to the medium tension offering enough tension to alleviate most aches and pains while you sleep.
On my side, I did get decent give at the shoulder, but if you're a lighter side sleeper (say under about 70kg) you might still find it a touch on the firmer side because latex doesn't 'collapse' the way memory foam can. Also worth saying, the bounce is great for moving around, but if you sleep with a fidgety partner you'll still notice some movement compared to a more dampened foam-heavy mattress. Edge support was fine when I sat on the side to put my socks on, but it isn't that locked-in, reinforced edge feel you get on some pricier hybrids.
