Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Silentnight Healthy Growth Starry Natural Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

In the showroom, this felt far more substantial than the Starry Natural name suggests, with the 600 Mirapocket springs giving a stable medium feel rather than that bendy junior-mattress softness. As an average-weight combi sleeper, I found the surface easy to move across, and the wool top added a gentle cushioned feel without making it sinky. The edge support was the standout for me, because sitting near the side did not bring that cheap collapse I half expected. I’d still check the 29cm depth on bunks or raised frames and note the single-sided design, but as a child’s main mattress it made a reassuring first impression.

Why our sleep experts loved it

The Silentnight Healthy Growth Starry Natural Mattress was better in person than its childlike name led me to expect. I tested it in store expecting a fairly basic junior mattress with cheerful branding doing most of the work. The feel under hand was stronger than that: proper pocket spring support, a cushioned wool surface, and edges that did not collapse the moment I sat near them.

I am still cautious about parts of the pitch. Children’s mattresses can get over-sold with soft language about healthy sleep, and this one is no different. Even with that caveat, the core spec is respectable for a child’s main bed.

Construction and showroom details

The support unit uses 600 Mirapocket springs. In an adult mattress that would be a fairly modest number, although on a smaller child’s mattress it makes much more sense because there is less sleeping surface to cover. The important part from my testing: I could not feel the springs poking through the comfort layer when pressing or lying across it. That matters far more than chasing a bigger number on a spec card.

Wool is used as the comfort filling, and it gives the mattress a calmer top feel than many synthetic junior models. Compared with IKEA’s basic children’s foam mattresses, this Silentnight felt steadier at the side and more substantial through the middle in the showroom. The edge support was the bit that caught me off guard. A pleasant surprise.

The 29cm depth needs a practical check before buying. On a normal single frame or divan, fine. On a bunk bed, cabin bed or high sleeper, that height may reduce the useful guard-rail clearance. The single weighs 18.5kg, so rotating it is realistic for one adult, though it is not a flimsy mattress you can throw around with one hand.

Feel, comfort and spring response

Silentnight describes the firmness as medium, and I think that is fair. The top has some cushioning from the wool, then the Mirapocket unit gives it a stable base. It did not feel spongy, and there was no obvious dip when I put weight through one hip.

For a growing child, I prefer this sort of restrained comfort to a very soft foam slab. A mattress for children should support them cleanly through the torso and still feel inviting at bedtime. This one managed that balance better than I expected from a range with such playful branding.

The wool is promoted as breathable and temperature regulating. I buy the logic, because wool can deal with warmth and moisture better than basic polyester fillings, but a showroom is a poor place to judge summer heat. Add a waterproof protector, as many parents will, and the protector may dominate the feel far more than the filling underneath.

Best fit in the home

This is a sensible choice for a child moving into a proper single bed. The mattress is hypoallergenic, made in the UK, approved by the National Bed Federation, and the fire resistance conforms to BS7177: 2008 for domestic use. Silentnight also gives it a 5-year guarantee, which is a decent length for a children’s product from a major brand.

The single-sided design is the weaker decision. You can rotate it, yet the same sleep surface takes every night of wear, plus the usual reading, lounging and occasional bouncing that children put a mattress through. I would have preferred a two-sided build here, because it would give parents a bit more room for error over time.

I would also be careful with the “chemical-free” style of claim in the marketing. The mattress has to meet UK fire safety rules, so parents dealing with sensitivities should look at the care documents and retailer information rather than relying on a broad phrase. The composition is good. The wording around it is doing a little too much.

Final take from the shop floor

I would consider this for a child’s everyday bed, mainly because the construction feels properly judged: 600 pocket springs, wool comfort filling, medium support, and edges that behaved well during testing. It feels like a small mattress with grown-up thinking behind it.

The purchase decision would come down to the bed frame. A 29cm-deep mattress in the wrong bunk or raised frame can create a safety headache, however comfortable it feels on the shop floor. Measure that rail clearance first; the mattress itself did enough to earn the second look.
