Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Relyon Comfort Pure 1000 Pocket Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

Trying the Relyon Comfort Pure 1000 in the showroom, I found the medium-firm feel well suited to me as an average-weight back sleeper, with my hips staying level rather than dipping. The 1000 Posturepocket spring unit gave clean, steady support and decent edge stability, though it doesn’t feel as substantial as higher spring-count models I’ve tried. I liked the practical 26cm depth, UK-made finish and eight-year guarantee, while the Soft White Fibres added light cushioning without that sinking memory-foam hug. I’d happily shortlist it for a traditional, supportive back-sleeper mattress, but heavier couples or anyone after plush luxury should probably try Relyon’s higher-spec options too.

What our sleep experts found

Relyon is still one of the traditional mattress brands I take seriously, and the Comfort Pure 1000 Pocket Mattress felt very much from that school when I tried it in store. Neat finish, sensible tension, no flashy boxed-mattress theatrics. The reservation arrives early, though: 1000 pocket springs is respectable, yet it feels light beside many current models at 1500 springs and above. Good foundation, limited ceiling.

The medium to firm label felt accurate on the shop floor. Lying on my back, my hips stayed level and the surface had enough firmness to feel supportive without turning harsh. On my side, my shoulder and hip sank in enough for a clean spinal line, though the comfort layer is not plush in the hotel-bed sense. This is a supportive Relyon first, a softly cushioned mattress second.

Construction, cover and care

The core is a 1000 Posturepocket spring unit with Soft White Fibres above it. Each spring sits in its own pocket, so the support feels cleaner than an old open coil system, and the mattress does not wobble around under the body. I could feel proper separation through the middle in store, although a quick showroom test cannot prove how much disturbance a restless partner would cause across a full week of use.

The knitted cover has a tidy, micro-quilted finish. It felt pleasant under the hand, not luxurious in a thick hand-tufted way, and the Bio-Protect treatment is one of those features I treat cautiously. A cover can feel smooth and well secured in store; claims about bacteria and dust mites need real use over time. I could not verify that by lying on it for a short test. Fair to mention, because the marketing gives it plenty of attention.

Depth is a practical strength. At 26cm, this mattress should work with normal fitted sheets in most homes, so there is no immediate need to buy deep bedding. The single-sided design also makes day-to-day care easier, as there is no flipping. Relyon says to rotate it monthly from head to foot, and the turning handles are there for that job. Use them from the start. Single-sided mattresses can develop wear patterns when people treat “easy care” as “do nothing”.

The 8-year guarantee is impressive for this level, and the mattress is made in the UK with National Bed Federation approval. Fire resistance is listed to BS7177: 2008 for domestic home use. Those details matter because Relyon’s appeal has always been about trust and conventional build quality. Even so, the spec sheet still comes back to that spring count. It is not poor. It is simply not where I would stop looking with a bigger budget.

Comfort and support in person

Back support was the best part of the test. The mattress kept a flat, even profile beneath me, with no sagging sensation around the pelvis. The edge support also felt firmer than I expected from a 1000 spring model, helped by the outer rows of stronger springs. Sitting on the side to put shoes on felt steady enough. Sleeping right on the border of the mattress is another matter; the centre remains the best place to judge its support.

Side sleeping was better than I expected. My shoulder did not jam against the surface, and my hip had enough allowance to avoid that tilted-spine feeling. A curvier side sleeper may still want a deeper comfort build. There is no memory foam hug here, and some buyers will miss that immediate cushioning. Others will prefer the cleaner, traditional feel.

Compared with the Sleepeezee Jessica range I have tried in shops, this Relyon feels simpler through the support core. The Sleepeezee has a denser showroom feel under the hips; the Comfort Pure 1000 comes across as easier-going and more conventional. The Relyon name carries weight, but the badge alone does not upgrade a 1000 spring unit into a premium support system.

Best match for this mattress

Average-weight back sleepers are the clearest fit. Side sleepers who dislike very soft mattresses should also get on with it, provided they are not chasing deep sink. Combination sleepers may appreciate the surface because it is easy to move across. No stuck-in-foam feeling. That part is refreshing.

Heavier sleepers and heavier couples should pause. The showroom model did not buckle, but daily use is a tougher test than fifteen minutes in a shop. A spring count of 1500 or above gives extra reassurance in a main bedroom, and that is where I would look when the budget allows. Relyon makes stronger-feeling mattresses higher up the range, so this is not the point where the brand runs out of options.

Decision after testing

The Comfort Pure 1000 is a sound buy for someone who wants a traditional, UK-made, medium-firm mattress from a brand with a serious reputation. I would choose it for a back or side sleeper of average build who values practicality as much as plushness. For the main bed in a heavier household, I would walk a few steps further around the showroom and try Relyon’s higher spring-count models before signing the order.
