Why our sleep experts loved it
The Hypnos Banbury Cotton Comfort Mattress is a high-quality, handcrafted mattress designed to provide luxurious comfort and support all night long. I got my hands on this one in-store and spent a good few minutes pressing into the top, sitting on the edge, and having a quick lie down, and it definitely has that classic Hypnos feel, plush on top but still quite controlled underneath. With a combination of natural fillings and advanced spring technology, this mattress is a good shout for those who want a soft to medium firmness and decent pressure relief, just don't expect it to feel like a sink-in memory foam job.
The ReActivePro support layer At the core of the Hypnos Banbury Cotton Comfort Mattress is 1200 ReActivePro™ 7-turn pocket springs. These extra deep springs are designed to adapt to your unique shape, providing responsive support and pressure relief. When I lay on my back I could feel the springs reacting in a more 'buoyant' way than some of the flatter pocket systems, it pushes back nicely rather than letting you drop too far. The 7-turn technology helps to absorb and disperse your body weight, while also bouncing back to provide extra support.
The pocket springs are stitched into the border for a reinforced, sturdier edge, and are finished off with 2 rows of genuine hand side stitching along the border. Sitting right on the side, the edge held up better than a lot of softer-feel mattresses, but it still compresses a bit, so if you perch on the edge to put socks on every morning, it's not going to feel as solid as a proper ortho model.
The wool comfort layer On top of the pocket springs is a layer of natural wool fillings, which are both plush and sustainable. Running my hand across the surface and giving it a few firm presses, it feels springy and padded rather than squishy, and you can tell it's more about natural loft than foam hug. Wool is known for its temperature-regulating properties, making it a great filling for all seasons. It keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter months, and can be traced back to its origins through the Red Tractor program.
The wool fillings are infused with natural cotton fillings, which are highly breathable and wick away moisture, helping to keep you cool and comfortable all night long. That said, if you love that slow-melting memory foam feel for pressure points, this won't scratch that itch, it relieves pressure in a more traditional, cushioned way.
The soft-medium tension The Hypnos Banbury Cotton Comfort Mattress has a soft to medium firmness, making it perfect for those who prefer a softer feel. On my side, my shoulder settled in nicely and I didn't feel that sharp pressure you can get on firmer pocket spring mattresses, which is usually a good sign for lighter to average weight side sleepers. The combination of the pocket springs and natural fillings provides excellent support and pressure relief, while still being comfortable and cosy.
If you prefer a firmer feel or sleep primarily on your back, the Hypnos Burford Ortho Comfort Mattress might be a better option for you. I also think heavier back sleepers could find this a touch too forgiving around the hips over a full night, it's comfy, but it won't suit everyone. If however you are a mixed sleeper or primarily sleep on your side then the Banbury could be the perfect option for a great nights sleep.
Who the mattress might suit The Hypnos Banbury Cotton Comfort Mattress is ideal for those who want a soft to medium firmness and excellent pressure relief, especially if you like a more traditional, natural filling feel rather than foam. If you're the type who sleeps warm, the wool and cotton combo is a sensible choice, and from what I felt in person it breathes better than a lot of foam-topped options.
Who the mattress won't suit If you're shopping on a budget through mid-range, you probably won't find success with this particular product. The prestigious retailer and impressive assortment of high quality materials mean that you will be unlikely to ever see this product breach the mid-range price banding. Another concern is the soft-medium tension, which will not be optimised for most back sleepers who are better off with a firmer tension mattress.
It's also not the one I'd pick if you're really sensitive to movement, pocket springs help, but a softer top can still let you feel a partner getting in and out a bit more than you'd like. And if you want that dead-still, slow response feel, you're looking at the wrong type of build here.
Final Thoughts The Hypnos Banbury Cotton Comfort Mattress is a high-quality, luxurious mattress that provides excellent comfort and support. For me personally, it sits in the 'properly comfy, well made, but not for everyone' bracket, I like the buoyant support and the natural, breathable feel, but I'd steer strict back sleepers and anyone wanting a really firm edge toward something else. With its soft to medium firmness, natural fillings, and advanced spring technology, it suits those who want a comfortable, supportive product that helps to relieve pressure. If you are after a soft to medium firmness and excellent pressure relief, the Hypnos Banbury Cotton Comfort Mattress is worth considering.
