Today, I'm diving into the world of ultra-firm mattresses with the Rock Hard Mega Firm 1500 Pocket Mattress from Mattress Online. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Rock Hard? Really?" But on paper this mattress lives up to its name: it carries Mattress Online's firmest rating, Extra Firm, and the filling is compressed polyester under a hand-tufted surface. One owner called it "Super rock hard, like actually rock hard". I'm here to share all the nitty-gritty details with you.
Who it will suit / Who I recommend it for
For those who've been on the hunt for a mattress that offers an orthopaedic feel and full-body support, this might just be your match made in heaven. With 1500 pocket springs, it promises to contour and support every inch of your body. Further to this, if you're eco-conscious, you'll be pleased to know that this mattress is fully recyclable at the end of its life. Plus, with its plush insulator pad, it regulates heat, ensuring you're not sweating buckets by dawn.
Who it will not suit / Who I do not recommend it for
Now, let's be clear: this mattress is not for the faint-hearted. If you're someone who dreams of sinking into a soft, cloud-like bed, the Rock Hard Mega Firm might feel more like a slab of stone. While the hand-tufted sleep surface amplifies the firm feel, it might come across as much too hard for the average person. You see, this is a specialist product, that means those without requirements for a firm mattress with orthopaedic qualities should look elsewhere. Side sleepers will also not find this product suitable as there is no sinkage for the hips or shoulders.
How firm is it?
The name says it all, the Rock Hard Mega Firm Mattress is not just firm; it's mega firm. It's designed for those who crave an intense, orthopaedic feel. We recommend this for back sleepers only who require ortho properties.
Benefit of polyester fillings
Despite its mega firmness, the mattress doesn't skimp on comfort. The High Density Compressed polyester fillings ensure a snug feel, while the blissful extra firmness ensures you're supported throughout the night. It's like having a firm yet comforting hug every time you lie down. Polyester might not seem premium, but it is particularly effective for comfort while also keeping costs to a minimum, offering a good night's sleep at fair value.
Benefit of pocket springs
The 1500 pocket springs are the stars of the show here and are typically found in more expensive variants. The benefits of these springs are vast, with them outperforming open coil and reflex foam competitors. These springs gently contour to your body, providing personalised support and ensuring your spine is aligned just right. And for those who like to live life on the edge (literally), the additional steel support around the mattress edge ensures you won't roll off.
Will the mattress suit couples?
For couples, this mattress is a mixed bag. On one hand, the individual pocket springs ensure minimal motion transfer, so if your partner is the type to dance in their sleep, you won't be jolted awake. On the other hand, the mega firmness doesn't suit most people, let alone two people together. That said, if you both require orthopaedic tension, it's a winner.
What do customers think?
Owners who mention the firmness mostly back up the name. Back pain comes up again and again: one owner wrote "it's the first time in ages I wake up without lower back pain" and another said "my back feels so much better". It can take some getting used to. One owner admitted "at first I thought it was too hard" before deciding after a month that they were happy to keep it, while another softens it with a topper ("I use a mattress topper to give it a bit of softness"). The edges get a mention too, with one owner writing "Does not dip when you sit on it." Where owners do complain, it's more often that it isn't hard enough, with some finding it softened or dipped with use ("Definitely not rock hard firm", "The middle sinks in with both sleepers rolling into the middle"), and a few were plainly unhappy, one calling it "worse than sleeping in the floor". That said, we want to be clear, this is an orthopaedic very firm mattress, it is not to be purchased by those who either sleep on their side or do not have specific firmness needs.
