Why our sleep experts loved it
The Grigio Ottoman Bed Frame in the Furniture Village catalogue caught my eye as soon as it was released. But when I saw one in store, I came away with mixed feelings. It is a well constructed, good value and very functional ottoman bed frame. Styling wise, and especially in terms of the headboard, it is strikingly modern, bold and luxurious. It would fit in well if your bedroom has other high gloss or marble effect pieces, but it might feel like the odd one out in a more traditionally decorated space.
Design & Build The Grigio is not a subtle bed. The headboard combines a high gloss, marble effect ceramic surround with a padded central upholstered panel in soft grey fabric. It is part of the wider Grigio bedroom range, which carries the same glossy ceramic finish across wardrobes, chests and other bedroom furniture pieces to create a coordinated, modern showroom aesthetic.
Close up, the ceramic surround is sleek, reflective in store lighting, and the marble effect pattern reads as distinctly contemporary. To my eye it jostles aggressively for attention if you are used to timber frames, buttoned headboards or more classic upholstery. In isolation on the shop floor it looked like a dramatic, high end piece of bedroom furniture, but when I mentally placed it in my own, more traditionally furnished bedroom, I could immediately see it dominating the space in a way that I would not personally enjoy.
In terms of build quality it felt reassuringly solid. There was no obvious flex or creaking when I leant or pushed against the headboard or side rails, and it felt like a properly constructed, solid frame as opposed to a flimsy flat pack. The ceramic and padded fabric combination gives it a textural contrast that works, although the hard ceramic surfaces are really the first thing your eye is drawn to, which I would describe as either a pro or a con depending on your personal taste.
It is exclusive to Furniture Village and comes in double, king and super king sizes, so you can scale the look up or down depending on your room. At the time of viewing, the double was on a promotion at around £764, reduced from a higher list price. That puts it in the mid to upper bracket for an ottoman bed frame but still reasonable value for the amount of storage and the materials on offer.
Assembly & Setup This is a bed frame that is sold with included assembly as part of the premier delivery, so in most cases the delivery team will build it in the room of your choice and position it where you want it. For a heavy ottoman with a large ceramic headboard, that is an extremely welcome inclusion, as it is not the kind of frame you will want to drag up the stairs or then try to build single handed in your bedroom.
Lead time is quoted at around 21 days, with a proviso that some parts of the UK are likely to take an additional week or two. In practice I felt it was a bit sluggish compared with some of the delivery times I have seen from other suppliers, who can now turn around bed frames much faster if required. For most people that will not be a problem, but it might matter if you are working to a tight move in or guest room deadline, or planning to coordinate the Grigio bed with the rest of the range and need that many weeks to be sure.
Comfort & Practicality Comfort with any bed frame depends very much on the mattress you choose to match it, but the frame does have an influence. The Grigio uses an ottoman base platform so when you have a mattress on it you get a flat, supportive surface to sleep on. In store, when I leant back on the headboard, the upholstered centre panel felt nicely cushioned and supportive behind my shoulders. It is padded enough that you can comfortably sit up and read or watch TV without feeling as though you are pushing against a solid piece of wood.
The ceramic outer frame around the upholstered panel, however, changes the dynamic of the headboard, both visually and physically. Because it is glossy and cool to the touch your arms or head can occasionally brush up against a hard edge if you sprawl. It is not uncomfortable as such, but it does never quite let you forget that this is a piece of furniture designed to make a visual statement first and foremost.
Day to day, the finish is very easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth, which is great if you are prone to make up or product marks along the sides of the headboard. You should not use abrasive cleaners and the ceramic surface is not fully heatproof and may show surface scratches in certain lighting, so you will want to be a little careful with sharp jewellery, zips and any hot devices you might absent mindedly rest against it.
Storage This is one area where the Grigio definitely earns its keep. The base has a full under bed ottoman compartment, accessed by lifting the mattress platform to reveal a large storage cavity underneath. In store I was impressed by how much storage space was actually on offer. It is easily large enough to fit spare bedding, seasonal clothes and a few bulky items that might otherwise take up wardrobe space.
The mechanism on the showroom model felt smooth and controlled and the platform stayed in place once raised, so you are not fighting to hold it open while rummaging inside. As always with ottoman beds, the ease of lifting will depend a little on the weight of the mattress you choose, but the frame itself feels more than capable of handling a heavy mattress without complaint.
If, like me, you live in a typical UK home where storage is at a premium, the ottoman element is a major selling point, and genuinely useful rather than an afterthought. It also means you can potentially get away with fewer bulky chests or blanket boxes in the room, which helps if you are trying to keep a smaller bedroom feeling open.
Everyday Use In practical everyday terms, the Grigio is a bed that I think will suit best in a bedroom that already has a modern, glossy aesthetic. Pair it with the matching Grigio pieces and you will end up with a very coordinated, modern hotel inspired look. In that context the oversized, bold headboard looks intentional and impressive.
In my own more traditional setting with softer textiles and timber pieces, I know it would stick out in a way that would irritate me. The high gloss, marble effect fascia and the sharply delineated headboard simply do not blend, they demand attention. If you are in any doubt, I would ask yourself whether you already have other ceramic, marble effect or high gloss furniture in the room. If the answer is no, then this may become a visual focal point that you either end up designing the rest of the room around, or slightly resenting.
On the plus side, once it is in situ it should be straightforward to live with. The wipe clean surfaces are fairly forgiving of everyday dust and marks, the upholstered insert is comfortable enough for propping up in bed, and the substantial frame feels stable and secure. It is worth being aware that glossy ceramic can highlight smudges and light scratches under strong lighting, so if your bed is next to a big window you may find yourself giving it a quick buff more often than with a matte fabric frame.
Who it suits I would recommend the Grigio Ottoman Bed Frame if you are into contemporary luxe styling and are drawn to high gloss, marble effect finishes, if you already own or plan to buy other pieces from the Grigio bedroom, living or dining ranges so the bed will fit into a coordinated set, if you need serious under bed storage and would make full use of a large ottoman compartment, and if you like a sturdy, substantial frame and are happy to pay a little more for something that feels like a permanent piece of furniture rather than a temporary solution.
Who it does not suit I would be more cautious if you have a traditional or cottage style bedroom with timber furniture and softer, more classic styling, as in that context the headboard is going to look jarringly modern. It is also not ideal if you dislike high gloss or reflective finishes, or are very bothered by the appearance of small scratches and smudges over time. If you want a very understated bed frame that quietly blends into the background, the Grigio simply is not that type of design. Likewise, if you need ultra quick delivery or are on a very tight budget, there are plainer ottoman frames that are cheaper and sometimes available faster.
Final Verdict On the whole, I would say that my view of the Grigio Ottoman Bed Frame is that it is a well made, good value ottoman bed with a very specific, bold aesthetic. The construction feels solid, the storage is genuinely generous, and the combination of upholstered comfort and wipe clean ceramic is practical if you take care of it.
Personally, the styling does not work for me. The headboard in particular feels like a big, glossy statement that clashes with my more traditional design preferences, and I would not choose it for my own bedroom. But that is a question of taste rather than quality. If you already gravitate towards modern, high gloss furniture and want your bed to be the focal point of the room, this could be a strong choice, especially when it is on promotion.
If you are in any doubt, I would strongly suggest seeing it in store, standing back and trying to imagine it against your actual walls and furniture. If you love the look, the underlying frame, storage and build quality should serve you well for years. If, like me, you hesitate over the headboard, that hesitation probably tells you everything you need to know.
