Why our sleep experts loved it
The Willow and Eve Bed Co Sleep Comfort Mattress is pitched as a medium to firm, affordable option with a traditional feel. I have not had the chance to try this one in person, and I also have not slept on it at home. My assessment is based on the published specification and the pattern that I have seen over the years with similar constructions. Archers is based in Scotland, so this is very much an online, spec led review. And I will be honest, the build here makes me cautious before I even get into the finer details.
Design and features
You are looking at a classic open coil spring core with hypo allergenic white fibre comfort layers and a damask cover, finished with deep quilting for a smoother surface. It is also a two sided mattress, and the brand recommends regular rotation and flipping, which is a positive. Two sided models can last longer when they are properly maintained, simply because you are not grinding down the same comfort layers night after night.
There is also a rod edge wire around the perimeter to reduce that saggy edge feeling that cheaper open coil mattresses can suffer from. That said, rod edging is not the same as genuinely strong edge support from a higher end spring unit, so I would still expect some sit down compression over time, especially if you perch on the side to put socks on.
Mattress comfort
This is where my opinion gets blunt. Open coil springs plus white fibre fillings is one of the most unforgiving combinations in modern mattress retail. Open coil units tend to distribute load across the whole surface rather than responding precisely under your shoulders and hips, so you can end up feeling a bit perched. White fibre tends to add initial loft, but it compresses, and it is not the sort of cushioning that gives you that “ahh” feeling when you lie down.
Yet customers do report comfort, which matters. Several reviews describe a great sleep and good value, and one buyer even purchased a second for an elderly parent who loved it. Others call it bouncy and comfortable, and a few mention it sleeping cool, which tracks with breathable fibre and an open spring system that lets air move around. But there is also a review from a side sleeper who found it too firm with hip pain and needed a topper. I find that completely believable with this build.
Suitability
On paper, medium firm should suit back and side sleepers of average weight, and I agree in principle. Back sleepers are the safest bet here, because firmer, flatter support can keep the lumbar area from dipping too far. Side sleepers are more complicated. If you have wider hips or shoulders, or you are lighter and need more pressure relief to “sink in” a touch, I would not expect the fibre layers to contour enough on their own. You may end up doing what that reviewer did, adding a topper to create the missing softness.
For guest rooms, first flats, and anyone who wants a traditional, no fuss mattress at a keen price, I can see why it gets positive feedback. For chronic pain, it is a gamble. One reviewer felt it helped them sleep better, but another had the opposite experience. That swing is typical of firmer, simpler constructions.
The verdict
I like the price, I like the fact it is two sided, and I like that many buyers say it is comfortable and great value. But I do not like the core recipe. Open coil and white fibre is budget through and through, and in my experience it is rarely the best use of your money if comfort is the priority. At similar prices you can often find a basic reflex foam mattress that offers more consistent pressure relief and a more “finished” feel, even if it is less traditional. If you want bounce, breathability, and you sleep mostly on your back, this could be a decent buy. If you are a dedicated side sleeper, or you want that cosy cushioning straight away, I would keep browsing, unless you are happy budgeting for a topper from day one.
