Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Ultra 270 Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

In the Furniture Village showroom, the Mlily Ultra 270 felt immediately cushioned and calm, with that classic memory-foam hug rather than a bouncy, responsive feel. As an average-weight combination sleeper, I found it much happier when I rolled onto my side, where my shoulder and hip settled in comfortably, but on my back I could feel my pelvis dipping a touch more than I’d ideally want. The cool-touch removable cover made a nice first impression, and the hypoallergenic spec is useful for family homes, though dry-clean-only care means I’d absolutely use a protector from day one. I’d shortlist it for side-led sleepers who like sink-in foam and want to try before buying, but I’d compare the price carefully against Nectar or Emma before calling it great value.

Why our sleep experts loved it

Mlily earns some credit before I even get onto the Ultra 270. The brand was rolling foam mattresses years before Eve, Otty, Nectar, Leesa and Casper made the format feel new. This model has that same experienced feel in store: tidy, predictable and easy to understand. I did not come away thinking it was poor. I also did not come away thinking it was a clever-value buy, so I would price it directly against Nectar Memory Foam and whatever Emma has on offer that week.

My testing was done in a Furniture Village showroom, on the display base. That matters here. Foam changes character depending on the support beneath it, and this mattress has enough sink in the upper layer for the base to influence the result. Side sleeping felt stronger than back sleeping during my visit. Not by miles, but clearly enough.

What is inside it

The Ultra 270 is a rolled foam mattress with no pillow top. The construction is simple: gel memory foam at the surface, responsive transition foam below, then high-density support foam at the bottom. It is a familiar stack. Mlily has executed it neatly, yet there is no unusual engineering here that would make me ignore cheaper all-foam rivals.

The cover is removable and made from 60% polyester and 40% ice yarn. It felt cool under my hand in the shop, which is pleasant for the first impression. A retail floor cannot tell you whether it stays comfortable after six hours under a winter duvet or during a hot July night. I would treat the cooling language as a possible benefit, not a settled fact.

At 27 cm deep, the proportions are sensible. It looks substantial on a bed frame without drifting into awkward sheet territory. Care is less convenient: the cover is dry clean only, so a proper protector should go on from the start. One spilled coffee and you will wish you had.

There is no turning required, but regular rotation is still part of ownership. The weights are 28 kg for a double, 33 kg for a king and 39 kg for a super king, so larger sizes need two adults unless you enjoy wrestling mattresses. Slatted bases also need checking, as Furniture Village gives a maximum slat gap of 7.5 cm. Go wider and you risk excess dipping, plus guarantee trouble. It also needs to recover after being rolled and should be aired for 4 hours before use.

Comfort and support

Medium is a fair description in the showroom sense. The top foam takes pressure away from the shoulder quickly, and the base foam keeps the mattress from feeling hollow underneath. There is still a noticeable memory-foam cradle. Some buyers enjoy that held feeling. Others will feel slightly trapped by it.

On my side, the Ultra 270 made the most sense. Shoulder pressure eased, hip support stayed composed and the mattress did not collapse straight through. Back sleeping was more mixed. Initial comfort was good, then the pelvis seemed to settle a little deeper than I would choose for long-term lumbar support.

Motion transfer should be well controlled because this is an all-foam design, although a showroom visit cannot recreate a partner rolling around at 3am. Compared with the Simba Hybrid Original, this Mlily feels calmer and denser, with none of the spring-led push-back you get from a hybrid. Quiet, cushioned, slightly enveloping. That is the character.

Best suited to

Average-weight side sleepers are the easiest recommendation. The medium tension gives enough cushioning at the shoulder and hip, while the support layer underneath stops it feeling flimsy. Combination sleepers who spend some time on their back may also be comfortable, provided they already know they like memory foam.

Front sleepers should be cautious. The deeper foam feel can let the pelvis drop, and that is bad news for the lower back over repeated nights. Heavier back sleepers should test it carefully in store as well. The word medium covers a lot of ground, and this one leans towards the cushioned end on my body.

The hypoallergenic spec is useful, but I would not make it the main reason to buy. The stronger argument for this model is the Furniture Village route: trying it in person, checking the base requirements and having a physical retailer involved if something goes wrong. That service has a cost. It needs to matter to you, because the foam recipe alone does not justify paying a premium.

My buying call

I would shortlist the Ultra 270 for a side sleeper who wants a 27 cm rolled foam mattress from a shop rather than a purely online brand. I would skip it for front sleeping, firmer back support or anyone who dislikes sinking into memory foam. My decision would come down to the day’s deal; without a strong Furniture Village promotion, Nectar Memory Foam would be on the same comparison list before I paid.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability

    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.
