I'd keep the SleepSoul Air Mattress in a Box for a guest room, and only a guest room. It's an open coil, springs joined into one unit that I'll only defend for a bed guests use now and then, rolled into a box with a soft foam layer on top, and for not much more you can buy a rolled mattress with pocket springs. Owners mostly like it. My objection is the build, not their experience.
A traditional open coil, rolled
SleepSoul describes a traditional open-coil spring system under a soft foam layer and comfort quilting, in a stretch-knit cover. It's 21cm deep and arrives vacuum-packed in a roll, filling out within a couple of hours, SleepSoul says.
Rolling a mattress is fine, and I've no issue with the box, but I'd avoid this one for a bed you sleep on nightly. The problem is what's inside. Open coil springs are joined, so a partner's movement crosses the bed. The unit also tends to sink where you lie each night. A foam layer softens the first impression without changing that.
That's why a spare room is the one place it makes sense. It only ever needs rotating, never flipping, so it asks nothing of you between visits. The cat would be in the box before I'd got the mattress out.
Archers' free delivery ends at the ground-floor door, and a roll goes up the stairs to the spare room far more easily than a flat mattress would. Check the size first, though: Archers only sells it as a single, a small double or a double.
Most owners find it soft and comfy
Most owners rate it highly and call it comfortable, and one calls it very soft. One found it uncomfortable and nothing like the medium support described, and another had the wrong size delivered first, which is a retailer problem rather than a mattress one. That owner's tip is worth keeping, though: note the serial number when it arrives, because a guarantee claim needs it. A small sample, mostly happy.
Pocket springs in the same box
Put the Sareer Matrah Gel Pocket 1000 next to the Air and the extra money is easy to see. Both come rolled from Archers, both are single-sided, and they're 22cm against 21cm. The Sareer swaps the joined coil and soft foam for pocket springs topped with Sareer's latex-and-gel layer, and Archers sells it right up to super king.
For everyday use, buy that one or the Reflex Plus Pocket 1000: pocket springs, in a box. If it's only for occasional guests and price is everything, the Air will do, but I'd still spend a little more on pocket springs.
