Why our sleep experts loved it
Highgrove’s Edmonton Mattress in a Box is one of those very practical, no-nonsense options that pops up when you want a decent night’s sleep without handing over premium money. I should be clear about the limits of this review though. I have not tested the Edmonton in person, and I did not get to try it in store either, Archers is up in Scotland and I did not have the opportunity to visit. So this is a spec-led assessment, built from the construction details, brand cues, and the real-world customer comments available.
Design and features
The Edmonton combines high-density foam comfort layers with a traditional open coil spring unit. That immediately tells me what it is trying to be. Supportive enough for everyday use, forgiving enough for mixed sleeping styles, and affordable enough to land in that popular family guest room and first flat bracket. The advanced reflex foam core is described as contouring and pressure relieving, and on paper that is believable. Reflex foam is often used to create an even, buoyant feel rather than a deep hug, so you get a fairly responsive surface that suits people who do not want to feel stuck.
The spring system is the older style hourglass open coil, linked together with helical wires. It is stable at first, but it is not the longest-lasting approach when compared with pocket springs. In my experience, open coil units are more likely to lose their crispness over time, especially around the hips where the most load tends to sit. And the one year guarantee is a quiet hint that this is built to a price, not built for the long haul.
It is double-sided, which I genuinely like at this level. Being able to rotate and flip it can slow down wear, and the reinforced handles are a small but helpful touch for making that doable without a wrestling match. The roll-up delivery is also a win. Getting a mattress into a car, up tight stairs, or through a narrow hallway is often the worst part of the whole process, and a boxed format makes that painless.
Mattress comfort
Medium support is the headline, and I would expect this to feel comfortably balanced rather than plush. You will not get that thick, hotel-style cushioned top, the white fibre and foam mix at this price point tends to feel more functional than indulgent. But for many people that is fine, you lie down and it does its job. The foam layer should take the edge off the spring unit and reduce sharp pressure through shoulders and hips, which lines up with customer feedback calling it comfortable and supportive.
Suitability
This medium tension is a solid match for side sleepers, and it usually works well for back sleepers too if you are an average weight and you like a touch of give. But if you are a dedicated back sleeper who wants a flatter, firmer feel under the lumbar area, I think you would be better served by going slightly firmer or moving up to pocket springs for cleaner zoning and better long-term support. For heavier body types, I would be cautious. Open coil can feel a bit too springy and can tire quicker under sustained load.
The customer reviews we have are short but telling. People repeatedly mention comfort, support, and value for money, and one buyer specifically purchased it for their son and felt it delivered. That reads like a mattress that lands well for straightforward everyday use, which is exactly what the Edmonton is built for.
The verdict
I like the Edmonton for what it is. A convenient, medium-feel mattress that should suit most average-weight sleepers, and it is easy to get home and set up. But I do not love the open coil choice if you are buying for the long term, and the one year guarantee backs up my scepticism about durability. If you need something affordable that will work in a pinch, especially for a first home, a child or teen bedroom, or a spare room, this is a sensible buy. If you want a mattress to stay feeling consistent for years, I would spend more and go pocket sprung, even if it means waiting for a better deal.
