Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Jay-Be Benchmark S5 Hybrid Eco-Friendly Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

As an average-weight combi sleeper, I found the Jay-Be Benchmark S5 acceptable for a quick back-lying try in the showroom, but it lost me as soon as I rolled onto my side. The recycled e-fibres, glue-free mini pocket springs and hypoallergenic, foam-free build are nice touches, yet the open coil core gave it that connected, basic bounce rather than proper contouring. The knitted top felt tidy and lightly padded, but my shoulder and hip wanted more cushioning, and the edge dipped more than I’d like when I sat on it. I’d keep this to a spare room, teenager’s bed or lighter occasional use, because for nightly adult sleep it feels underpowered despite the eco pitch and 5-year guarantee.

Why our sleep experts loved it

I tried the Jay-Be Benchmark S5 Hybrid Eco-Friendly Mattress in a showroom, and it left me with the same reservation I usually have about adult open coil mattresses. The surface has a bit of padding, the eco story is busy, yet the bed underneath feels basic. I would not buy this for a main bedroom.

Jay-Be lists it as medium, with soft white fibres, mini pocket springs and a traditional open coil spring support system. That combination sounds busier on paper than it feels under body weight. The 22cm depth is acceptable for a rolled mattress, though it does not give the sense of substance I would want from something expected to cope with nightly adult use.

What Jay-Be has put together

The green credentials are doing a lot of the selling here. The e-fibres are made from recycled plastic bottles, the mini pocket springs are glue-free, and the mattress is rolled to reduce delivery emissions. Jay-Be also claims e-fibre production uses 90% lower CO2, 99% less water and 99% less land compared with cotton. Useful claims, provided the comfort is there. In the shop, the comfort was the weak link.

The knitted top felt tidy enough under hand, with no scratchy finish or obvious loose stitching on the display model I tested. Visually, though, it has the plain look of a cheaper rolled mattress. No lift in the design. The side turning handles are welcome, since this is single-sided and should be rotated rather than flipped, but that also limits how much you can manage wear over time.

Edge support disappointed me. Sitting near the side produced a soft dip and a slightly unstable feel, so anyone who sleeps close to the edge or sits there while getting dressed may notice it quickly. The padded borders sound reassuring in the description; the showroom feel did not back that up strongly.

Comfort and support in the showroom

The first contact is modestly cushioned. The fibre layer gives a light padded feel, and the micro e-pocket spring layer adds a little response near the top. After a minute or two lying down, the open coil core becomes obvious. It has that connected, old-school spring feel where pressure travels across the mattress instead of being absorbed cleanly.

On my back, the Benchmark S5 was passable for a short lie. Side sleeping was much less convincing. My shoulder did not get enough give, while my hip seemed to meet the spring unit in a fairly blunt way. That is the trade-off I see again and again with this construction: the mattress can feel medium at first touch, then rather crude once your weight settles.

I could not judge overnight heat from a showroom test, and foam-free fibres may appeal to people who dislike memory foam warmth. Still, the cooling and skin-friendly claims should not be treated as proof of better sleep. Hypoallergenic materials are a useful baseline, not a reason to ignore the support feel.

Who it suits, and who should walk past

This makes most sense for a spare room, a teenager, or a lighter adult who wants a low-fuss rolled mattress with a 5-year guarantee. Jay-Be is better known for compact and children’s sleep products, and this model feels closer to that world than to a serious adult hybrid.

Couples should be cautious. The linked spring feel gave me little confidence about motion isolation, and I could not replicate a full night with two people turning, getting up and settling back down. The BS7177: 2008 domestic fire resistance and National Bed Federation approval are reassuring compliance points, yet they do not change how ordinary the mattress feels.

Back sleepers on a tight budget may get along with it for a while. Side sleepers, heavier adults and anyone wanting strong edges should look elsewhere. I would put the same spend toward the IKEA Åbygda or a basic rolled foam mattress with a reflex foam base and a memory foam comfort layer; those usually give a steadier, simpler feel at this end of the market.

My call after trying it

The Benchmark S5 has an eco-conscious specification and UK manufacture, so it is not a careless product. The problem is that the actual lie-down feels underpowered: shallow cushioning, ordinary support and weak sides. Jay-Be can talk about recyclable materials all it likes; I still walked away thinking the mattress belongs in occasional use, not under an adult every night.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Ease of Use

  • Turning handles

Very comfortable mattress, no chemical smells, expanded quickly after taking off the outer packaging and letting it unfurl. Love the fact that it's eco-friendly. Able to use it straight away, although it takes about 24 hours to fully recover from being rolled up. It was about two or three nights before I got used to it, but now I'm sleeping a lot better than I did on my old lumpy mattress.
