Why our sleep experts loved it
The Mammoth Healthpro Elite is one of those mattresses that you lie on in the store and immediately recognise you’re in premium league. It’s tall, heavy and deeply padded, with a huge amount of contouring foam over a very solid spring unit. It also sits well into the luxury price bracket, with a double currently listed at around £2,049.99, reduced from £2,399.99. It’s a big ask for most wallets.
I tested the Mammoth Healthpro Elite in a Bensons showroom, and my first thought was how enveloping it felt for a mattress that is, on paper, rated as medium. There’s a real sense of prestige about Mammoth as a brand, and while they’ve been a little quieter in the mainstream over recent years, their focus has always been on clinically inspired comfort rather than trend-driven marketing. The Healthpro Elite is exclusive to Bensons, and effectively sits as a flagship product, combining an advanced dual-layer pocket spring system with Mammoth’s Medical Grade foam and PostureCells contouring technology.
Mammoth is also the only sleep brand to have an official partnership with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, which gives you a good indication of who they are aiming this at: people who care about spinal alignment, pressure relief and long-term joint comfort just as much as they care about plushness. In my time on the Healthpro Elite, it felt especially tuned to side sleeping, with the shoulders and hips sinking in generously while the midsection stayed well supported. I loved the feel, but at over two thousand pounds for a double this is very much a considered purchase rather than an impulse buy.
Construction & materials Under the bonnet, the Mammoth Healthpro Elite is a hybrid mattress that combines a dense dual-layer pocket spring unit with a slab of Medical Grade foam. There are a quoted 5,600 pocket springs in a king size, comprising 4,000 mini springs and 1,600 full height springs. The mini springs sit higher in the mattress and provide that immediate, responsive contouring as you lie down, while the deeper, full height springs provide core support and help maintain alignment throughout the night. Because each spring is individually encased, they all respond to your body rather than moving en masse, which is important for both pressure relief and partner disturbance.
On top of the spring unit is a 60 mm layer of Medical Grade foam that is zoned into three distinct regions to give targeted support to the shoulders, hips and lower back. In practice, this is what creates that hug you noticed in store. The foam has the behaviour of a more advanced form of memory foam: it has a slower response and a deep, conforming feel, but it is cut with Mammoth’s PostureCells, a series of individual cells that move independently to spread your weight more evenly. Those same channels between the cells also help air to circulate through the comfort layer, rather than trapping heat in a solid slab of foam.
The perimeter is wrapped in Mammoth’s EdgeMax system, a high density foam encasement that reinforces the edges to reduce roll-off and give you more usable sleep surface. The whole mattress is then finished in WAVE performance fabric, a knit cover that has carbon particles woven in to keep the surface feeling fresher and to help with moisture management. On top of that is a deep, reactive quilted top that gives the mattress its pillowy, hotel-bed style first impression as you lie down. The overall depth is a substantial 34.5 cm, so this is a tall mattress that feels every bit as substantial as it looks.
Importantly, the Healthpro Elite is hypoallergenic, made with materials that naturally resist common allergens and dust mites. It is also made in the UK in a factory that has both the Furniture Makers Manufacturing Guild Mark and the British Kitemark, two independent quality stamps rather than marketing fluff. Packaging comes in Mammoth’s I’m Green material, which uses a blend of sugar cane and recycled plastics, a nice touch if you are trying to make more sustainable choices in the bedroom.
Firmness & feel On paper the Mammoth Healthpro Elite is a medium mattress, and I would broadly agree, but the feel will depend heavily on your body weight and sleep position. On my side, the initial impression is soft and deeply cushioned. The quilted top and thick Medical Grade foam allow the shoulders and hips to sink in quite generously, so rather than lying on the bed you feel more like you are being gently held inside it. That tall spring unit underneath stops it from ever feeling sloppy or unsupportive, but there is no denying this is a very “huggy” mattress.
On my back, I found the feel was closer to a true medium: the lumbar area felt nicely supported and my pelvis did not drop away from alignment, but there is still more sink than you would get on a classic firm orthopaedic mattress. Light to average weight back sleepers who like a bit of contouring will probably find this balance very comfortable. If you are heavier, or if you are used to a noticeably firm bed, you may find the foam allows you to drop a touch deeper than ideal over time, especially around the hips.
For front sleepers, I am more cautious. The same plushness that makes it so comfortable on your side means there is potential for the lower back to over-arch when you lie on your stomach, particularly if you are heavier through the hips. I would not rule it out completely if you only occasionally sleep on your front, but if you are a dedicated stomach sleeper who likes to feel lifted on top of the mattress, there are better-suited, firmer options out there.
What really stands out is how even the pressure distribution feels. The zoned foam and independent springs do a very good job of taking the weight off pressure points, so I did not get that familiar pinch under the shoulder that you can get on a less sophisticated medium mattress. Movement is also well controlled; you sink in enough that you are not rolling about, but there is still enough spring response that you can change position without feeling stuck.
Performance & support In terms of overall support, the Healthpro Elite feels very considered. On my side, my spine looked and felt well aligned, with the firmer middle zone of the foam and the deeper springs quietly doing their work underneath the extra sink of the shoulders and hips. On my back, the mattress kept a neutral curve through the lower spine without any sense of being pushed upwards, which is a common issue on very firm orthopaedic designs.
Edge support is better than you might expect for such a plush-feeling mattress. The EdgeMax system means you can sleep right up to the edge without that rolling-off sensation, and I felt comfortably supported when lying near the side. Sitting on the very edge to put on socks, you will still see a fair bit of compression thanks to the thick foam layers, but that is true of most deep hybrids. It is certainly more stable at the sides than many softer memory foam mattresses I have tested.
Partner disturbance is an area where the Mammoth Healthpro Elite really excels. The combination of dual-layer pocket springs and dense foam means that movement is very localised. When I shifted from my back to my side, the other side of the mattress barely flinched. If you or your partner are restless sleepers, or if you go to bed and get up at different times, that level of motion isolation is a real advantage.
Long-term durability is always difficult to judge from short-term testing, but the specification here does inspire confidence. A tall pocket spring core, substantial foam, edge reinforcement and UK manufacturing standards, plus a generous 10 year guarantee, all suggest Mammoth expect this mattress to hold up over time, provided you follow the care instructions and rotate it regularly. As with any deep quilted top, you can expect some body impressions in the upper comfort layers over the years, but that is more a cosmetic issue than a structural one if the springs and core support remain sound.
Temperature regulation Whenever you have this much foam on top of a mattress, there is a risk of it sleeping warm, especially for naturally hot sleepers. Mammoth is clearly aware of this and has tried to build in a few countermeasures. The PostureCells cut through the Medical Grade foam do not only help with contouring, they also create air channels that let heat and moisture move away from the body. The dual layer spring system allows air to circulate inside the mattress more freely than in a solid block of foam, and the WAVE performance fabric is designed to feel cooler and fresher against the skin than a standard stretch knit.
In reality, the Healthpro Elite feels comfortably neutral to very slightly warm. I did not experience any clamminess while testing it, and it is markedly cooler than the older generation of dense memory foam mattresses. That said, if you know you run hot at night, or if you are moving from a very breathable traditional pocket spring mattress with only a thin top layer, you should expect this to feel more cocooning. Pairing it with a breathable protector and cotton bedding will help stay on the right side of cosy rather than stuffy.
Practical features From a practical point of view, there is a lot to like here, with a couple of caveats. The mattress is non-turn, so you only need to rotate it from head to toe rather than flipping it over, which is just as well because at 34.5 cm deep and packed with springs and foam it is a heavy piece of kit. Thankfully Mammoth has included proper flag-stitched handles on the sides, which makes rotating it every few months much more manageable for two people.
The depth does mean you will want a deep fitted sheet, ideally 36 cm or more, to avoid that annoying pinging-off-the-corner situation. If your bed frame has a very shallow headboard cut-out or side rails, it is also worth checking the total height once you add a base and mattress together, just to make sure it still looks proportionate in the room and you are not suddenly climbing a small mountain to get into bed.
Allergy sufferers will appreciate the hypoallergenic sleep surface and the general lack of natural fibres that can harbour dust mites. The fact it is made in the UK with recognised quality marks is reassuring, and the I’m Green packaging is a small but welcome nod to sustainability. On top of the 10 year product guarantee, Bensons adds a 40 Night Comfort Guarantee, so if, after a minimum of five nights, you really do not get on with it and have used a protector, you can arrange an exchange, albeit with some charges attached.
Who it suits In my view, the Mammoth Healthpro Elite is best suited to side sleepers, particularly those who want a lot of pressure relief through the shoulders and hips. The thick Medical Grade foam and dual spring system combine to create a very forgiving top feel that still keeps the spine well aligned, which is exactly what many side sleepers with niggling shoulder or hip pain are looking for.
It is also a strong option for lighter to average weight back sleepers who dislike very firm, board-like mattresses but still want their lower back properly supported. If you like the sensation of being cradled without disappearing into the bed entirely, this hits a sweet spot. Couples will benefit from the excellent motion isolation, and the edge reinforcement means you can use the full width of the mattress, which is handy if one of you tends to migrate across the bed in the night.
Given Mammoth’s clinical positioning and physiotherapy partnership, I would also consider the Healthpro Elite for people who live with ongoing joint aches or back complaints and who have perhaps tried simpler mattresses that have not quite relieved the pressure. It is not a medical device and you should always follow professional advice, but the combination of zoned foam, PostureCells and a highly responsive spring unit give it a very therapeutic feel for the right sleeper.
Who it does not suit Where I would be more cautious is with heavier back or stomach sleepers who like to feel perched on top of the mattress rather than nestled into it. The medium tension springs and generous foam top make this a far friendlier proposition for side sleeping than for pure front sleeping, and if you are significantly above average weight you may find you sink in more deeply than ideal over time, especially around the hips.
If you are an exceptionally hot sleeper, you may also want to think carefully. While the PostureCells, airflow through the springs and WAVE fabric all help, there is still a lot of foam here, and you are wrapped in quite a deep hug. Those who prefer a cool, almost airy feel under them might be better with a slightly firmer, less cocooning hybrid or a more traditional pocket sprung mattress with a thinner comfort layer.
Finally, there is the price. With a double currently at just over £2,000 even after discount, this is a serious investment. If your budget is tight, or if you simply do not want to commit that much money to a mattress, you will find more affordable hybrids that deliver a good level of comfort and support, even if they can’t quite match the specification or the brand prestige here.
Final verdict The Mammoth Healthpro Elite mattress feels every inch the high-spec, clinically informed flagship it is positioned to be. The combination of 5,600 pocket springs, zoned Medical Grade foam, PostureCells contouring and a deep, cushioned top results in a mattress that offers outstanding pressure relief and a luxurious, hugging feel, particularly for side sleepers. Build quality is excellent, the 10 year guarantee is generous, and the UK manufacturing credentials inspire confidence.
The trade-offs are fairly clear. It’s tall, heavy and not the coolest or firmest mattress on the market, and the price pushes it firmly into luxury territory. For many people, that will be hard to justify, however nice it feels in the showroom. But if you are primarily a side sleeper, perhaps with some ongoing shoulder, hip or back discomfort, and you are prepared to invest in a mattress that has been designed with clinical input rather than simply made to a price, the Mammoth Healthpro Elite is a standout option that could easily see you through the next decade of sleep.
