Why our sleep experts loved it
The Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 is a proper, traditional pocket sprung mattress, the type that can feel so hard to find on the high street these days when foam has become so dominant in the mattress world. I tried it in store at Dreams, and my immediate reaction was that it was too firm for me, way too firm to the point that it was actually causing discomfort after a couple of minutes. That will be a dealbreaker to some people, but for a particular type of sleeper, it is exactly the point.
This is a mattress you buy for the one job it is very good at: providing an uncompromisingly firm, almost orthopaedic, flatter sleep surface. If you are hoping to get even a little bit of cushioned give in the feel, it is likely to disappoint, and it does not try to hide that fact.
Construction & Materials The Kenilworth uses a pocket spring system at its core, with Dreams listing 1443 pocket springs (dependent on size) plus edge support that is designed to reduce that slope at the sides when you sit on the mattress or sleep near the perimeter of the bed.
The top layers are kept fairly traditional and breathable with poly cotton and bamboo viscose fillings listed, finished with an antibacterial bamboo blend cover . The total depth is listed as 23cm . In super king, Dreams lists the weight as 39kg , which gives you an idea it is a substantial, full-size mattress rather than a compressed, boxed roll-up.
Firmness & Feel Very firm is the official comfort grade, and in person, it absolutely lives up to that description. When I laid on it in the shop, I did not get that initial softness you often feel from quilted tops or plusher natural materials in the layers. Instead, it was rigid and unyielding, more like a supportive platform with a thin surface layer than a mattress that moulds around your body.
For me, that resulted in immediate discomfort, especially because there was very little pressure relief through the top. If you are a side sleeper, or you like a mattress to cushion your shoulder and hip, this one is likely to feel too hard, too soon.
Performance & Support If you need a mattress that prioritises alignment over contouring, this is where the Kenilworth makes its case. The pocket springs give a stable, held-up sensation, and the overall build is clearly aimed at keeping your spine level rather than allowing you to sink in.
I can see it working best for back sleepers and stomach sleepers who want their midsection lifted and supported. It is also the sort of mattress that could work for someone who has been advised to go very firm, as long as they know that "very firm" here really does mean that.
Temperature Regulation This was the thing that surprised me most in-store. The bamboo-based fillings and cover did a genuinely convincing job of feeling cool and breathable. When I tested it, I did not get that warm, slightly clingy sensation that I can sometimes find on foam-heavy mattresses, even under the bright lights of a showroom. If you are a hot sleeper, the material choice here makes a lot of sense.
Practical Features The edge support is a practical bonus if you like to use the full width of your mattress or you often sit on the side to get dressed. At 23cm deep , it should also suit most fitted sheets without needing special deep-pocket bedding.
Pricing will matter to most people. When I checked, Dreams had it listed at £1,299 (prices vary by size and promotions) and my honest feeling is that it is on the expensive side for the amount of comfort material you get on top. That said, if you are specifically looking for a premium, traditional, very firm pocket sprung mattress from a well-known British brand, there are not many options like this around these days.
Who It Suits This mattress is best for:
Back sleepers and stomach sleepers who want a very firm, flatter surface that holds you up rather than lets you sink in.
People who actively prefer an orthopaedic-style feel, including those who have been recommended a very firm mattress and know they get on with that sensation.
Hot sleepers who want a cooler, more breathable build than many foam-led alternatives.
Who It Doesn’t Suit This mattress is not a good match for:
Side sleepers, especially if you are sensitive at the shoulder or hip, as the surface feel is too rigid to give much pressure relief.
Anyone who enjoys a cushioned, welcoming top layer or a "hugging" feel.
Shoppers looking for maximum plushness or material-heavy comfort for the money, because the price feels high relative to the simplicity of the comfort layers.
Final Verdict The Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 is a classic example of a mattress that does one job and does it unapologetically. It is very firm in the truest sense, supportive, flat, and with very little interest in softness. I did not like it at all when I tried it in-store because it felt immediately uncomfortable for my body and my preferences, but that does not make it a bad mattress, it just makes it a highly specific one.
If you want a traditional, premium-feeling pocket sprung mattress with breathable bamboo components and you genuinely need something this firm, it is worth considering. If you are even slightly unsure about very firm comfort, I would strongly recommend testing it first, because the feel is not subtle.
