Why our sleep experts loved it
I've been looking forward to getting my hands on the new Simply Sealy 1000 Pocket Orthopaedic Mattress, a new addition to the Simply range from the popular, and now independent manufacturer, Sealy. I tried it out in person and spent a bit of time sat on the edge and having a proper lie down, rather than just giving it a quick poke and moving on.
This mattress features 1000 springs to provide all-round support for your individual needs and the tension across the layers comes in at a medium-firm. This is a particularly popular tension choice and is perfect if you like a mattress with plenty of support while still being comfortable and soft. On my back, it felt nicely level through the hips, that classic 'ortho' vibe without feeling like a plank. On my side though, I could feel a bit more pressure building around the shoulder than I'd want, so if you're a lighter side sleeper this could come up a touch firm.
The pocket springs respond to your shape and movement for personalised comfort and full body contouring. When I shifted about, I could feel the springs reacting in smaller sections rather than the whole surface moving with me, which is what you want from pocket springs. That said, 1000 springs is a decent count, but it's not the highest you'll see at this price point, so if you're expecting that super 'fine-tuned' contouring you get from higher counts, this sits a step below that.
Expertly hand-tufted to lock in the fillings for extra durability, tufting also provides additional support. Running my hand across the damask cover it felt smooth and properly traditional, but the tufts do give you a slightly more textured feel under a thin sheet, so it's worth knowing if you like a totally flat sleep surface. It's also single-sided so there's no need to turn it over, but you will need to stay on top of rotating it, and there aren't any handles mentioned which makes that job a bit more of a faff.
Finally, the mattress comes with a 5 year guarantee, which seems to be becoming increasingly common with the rise of increased competition from the bed-in-a-box industry. It's a welcome addition to a very reasonably priced mattress, although 5 years still isn't 'best in class' if you're comparing it to some longer guarantees out there. For me personally, this one makes most sense for back sleepers and anyone who likes a supportive, slightly firmer feel without paying over the odds. Sleep in comfort - and confidence - for years to come.
