Why our sleep experts loved it

I didn't get the time to spend with the Shire Worcester Contract Mattress in store as it is a contract mattress and not typical available through any physical retailers. That said, this mattress is built to solve a paperwork problem first. It has been knocking about this end of the market for years, and the look has not aged kindly. Thin, plain, practical in a rather joyless way. For a last-minute commercial replacement, I understand why it exists. For a normal home bedroom, I would be very reluctant.

The price-led feel is obvious as soon as you press into it. This is cheap contract bedding: useful in a pinch, easy to specify, and very easy to outgrow if anyone expects comfort beyond the basics. Harsh? Possibly. Accurate, yes.

The fire spec carries the product

The Worcester conforms to BS7177:2008 Source 5, medium hazard, so it can be used across many commercial premises such as guest houses, care homes and hotels. That accreditation is the main argument for buying it. Without that, the mattress would be a very ordinary budget open-coil model with a wipe-clean attitude.

At 17cm deep, it looks meagre on the bed base. There is no sense of depth or inviting upholstery, and the profile gives off that spare-room-in-a-budget-inn look. The filling is Soft White Fibres, and in person it feels exactly as simple as that sounds: a little padding on top, then you are quickly down to the spring unit.

The traditional open coil springs have a connected, old-fashioned response. Sit near the side and the supportive wire edge does help stop the border collapsing straight away, yet it still feels quite basic. A Sleepeezee contract pocket-sprung mattress feels steadier under load; the Worcester has the familiar open-coil wobble across the surface. Not subtle.

The cover is water-resistant, and that makes sense for spills, room turnarounds and awkward rental situations. It also gives the mattress a colder, more functional character. The National Bed Federation approval and UK manufacture are useful reassurances, although they do not make it feel any richer.

How it felt lying down

Shire describes the tension as medium, and I would agree. Medium here means approachable rather than luxurious. On my back, the support felt acceptable for a short test, but I did not get the firmer hold through the lower back that I would want for nightly use.

Side sleeping suited it better. Average-weight people should find the surface forgiving enough at the shoulder and hip, mostly because the construction gives way quite quickly. That quick give can feel comfortable for a few minutes in a shop. A full night is another matter, and I could not judge how much the fibres would compress after repeated use in a busy letting room.

Movement travels across the mattress. That joined-spring feel is the giveaway, and anyone sharing with a restless partner may notice it. I couldn't test the response by shifting position in store, nor could I recreate two people sleeping through the night. In a pop-up hotel room or occasional spare, the weakness becomes easier to tolerate.

The mattress is double-sided, so regular flipping should help spread wear. I would take that seriously here, because the 1 year guarantee is short and the build does not suggest a long, pampered domestic lifespan.

Where it makes sense

The medium support can work for both back and side sleepers, with side sleepers getting the easier deal. Average-weight users are the natural fit. Back sleepers who want stronger contouring should look at a firmer mattress, and heavier adults should be cautious because the 17cm build does not give much margin.

The weights show its contract purpose quite neatly: small single 19kg, single 19kg, small double 25kg, double 25kg and king size 35kg. Staff or landlords can move it without too much drama. For a domestic buyer, that portability is not a good enough reason to accept the cheap feel.

For landlords in a bind, emergency accommodation, or a hotelier replacing a failed mattress before the weekend, the Worcester is a practical answer. It ticks the fire-safety box and will get a room operational. In a private master bedroom, even a modest pocket-sprung domestic mattress from Silentnight or Sealy will usually feel calmer and look far better on the bed.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

The mattress is well made and not too heavy to turn. The support is even. It fits my bed which is a large single. I discovered that it is not terribly easy to find large single mattresses.
