Why our sleep experts loved it
If you have landed on the Shire Rochester Crib 5 Contract Waterproof Mattress because you need Crib 5 compliance, you are probably looking for something safe, practical, and easy to keep clean rather than something indulgent. That is exactly the lane this mattress stays in. I have not had the chance to test it in person, Archers is based in Scotland and my assessment here is based on the published construction and the small amount of customer feedback available, not a home trial.
Design and features
This is a classic contract mattress build. You are getting an open coil spring core with a rod edge to firm up the perimeter, plus breathable waterproof panels on the outside. In real world terms, that points to a mattress made to cope with heavy rotation and regular cleaning, and one that will not feel delicate. The Crib 5 angle is the main reason to buy it. In the UK, Crib 5 is the higher fire safety standard you see in care, hospitality, and clinical settings. The benefits are straightforward and genuinely important. It is a spec that helps reduce fire risk in higher risk environments, it is often a requirement for businesses and landlords, and it can offer peace of mind in homes where safety has to be taken more seriously than the average spare room.
The cover being cleanable with anti-bacterial cleaning agents is a big plus for infection control and general hygiene, especially for anyone bed-bound or dealing with continence issues. The fillings are described as hypo-allergenic, anti-bacterial, and resistant to dust mites, which is a sensible set of features for asthma and allergy households. That said, marketing language is easy to write, so I always advise people to treat those claims as supportive rather than miracle-working.
Mattress comfort
Comfort is where I am less enthusiastic. This style of entry level contract mattress has been around for years and it shows. Open coil units tend to feel more uniform and a bit more basic than pocket sprung alternatives, and waterproofing almost always brings a slightly firmer, less plush feel at the surface. It will do the job, but it is not going to give you that sink-in pressure relief most people associate with a genuinely comfortable mattress. If you are buying it for a guest room and expecting boutique hotel comfort, I think you will be disappointed.
Shire positions it as medium support, which sounds friendly, but medium in contract terms can still feel fairly straightforward. The only customer review provided says it is exactly as described, which is helpful context. Nobody is raving about comfort, they are confirming it meets the brief.
Suitability
I agree that medium tension can work for side and back sleepers, and I would also lean it slightly more toward side sleeping for average weight users, assuming the comfort layers are not overly thin. But I would be cautious if you are a back sleeper with recurring lower back pain, or if you are heavier than average. In those cases, I would usually rather see a firmer, more supportive build, ideally pocket springs, to keep the spine steadier over long periods in bed.
This mattress makes the most sense for care homes, HMOs that need the right compliance, guest houses, and family homes where waterproofing and higher fire safety are the priority. If you do not specifically need Crib 5, you can usually buy a nicer feeling mattress for similar money.
The verdict
The Shire Rochester is fit for purpose and honest about what it is. It is a lower tier contract mattress that has stuck around because some buyers need exactly this combination of Crib 5 compliance, wipe-clean practicality, and decent value. But if comfort is your main goal, I would not choose it. I would choose it when safety spec and hygiene come first, and I would accept the trade-off in feel because in that context it is the right compromise.
