Why our sleep experts loved it
I got my hands on the Sealy Divan Bed Base on Glides in Bensons for Beds, and the first thing I did was give it a proper wobble test. It felt solid straight away, with that reassuring 'proper bit of kit' vibe you want from a base. The solid timber frame and sleek silver glides make it feel planted, and when I pressed down on the corners and along the sides it didn't creak or flex in a worrying way. Crafted in the UK by Sealy exclusively for Bensons for Beds, it does come across as well put together, although the 'premium' feel will still depend on which fabric you pick and how fussy you are about finish. It comes with a 5-year guarantee, which is decent, but at this sort of price point I do like seeing longer cover from some brands.
Storage is where this base gets interesting, and it's the bit I spent the most time looking at. You've got ottoman, non-drawer, 2 drawers, 2+2 drawers, and 4 drawers options, so you can match it to your room layout rather than forcing it to work. I pulled the drawers in and out a few times and they did glide smoothly, but do bear in mind drawers on a divan like this are only as useful as the space around the bed, if you're tight to a wall or have bedside tables close in, you might end up not using them as much as you think. Also, if you're the type who stuffs heavy things in (books, tools, that sort of thing), I'd be a bit more careful, divan drawers are great for bedding and clothes, not a garage.
On value for money, it's a competitive buy if you want a Sealy-made base and you like the look. That said, you're paying for the brand and the retailer exclusivity a bit, and I've seen other divans around this price that throw in little extras like better castors, more fabric choices, or a slightly longer guarantee.
Style-wise it's a clean, modern look, with a contemporary woven fabric in Sand or Slate. I ran my hand across the fabric and it felt nice enough, but it's not the thickest, most hard-wearing upholstery I've ever felt, so if you've got pets that like to claw at corners, I'd be realistic about how it might hold up.
Assembly is simple. The parts come in the storage bag and the instructions are straightforward, but it's still a two-person job if you want to avoid scuffing the fabric or wrestling it into place on your own.
