Why our sleep experts loved it
I tried the Silentnight Revitalise Refresh 800 mattress in a Furniture Village store and, at its current sale pricing, I think it sits firmly in the "good value, but know what you are buying" bracket. It is a straightforward, firm pocket sprung mattress with a modern synthetic comfort layer that aims to behave like foam without the heat build up. The ActiveBreathe layer is pitched as a clever high performance alternative to memory foam, but in practice it feels more like a well engineered fibre pad than a true gel or visco foam comfort layer.
Construction & materials
At the core of the Revitalise Refresh 800 is Silentnight's Mirapocket spring system with 800 pocket springs in a king size. These are individually wrapped coils that move independently, which is what helps with contouring and partner disturbance compared to a traditional open coil mattress. Above the springs sits Silentnight's Eternity layer, designed to add stability and resilience so the mattress keeps its shape for longer rather than sagging prematurely.
The comfort comes from polyester fillings combined with the branded ActiveBreathe fibre layer. This is where the story diverges from standard memory foam or gel hybrid mattresses. Instead of a slab of foam, Silentnight is using a fibre based layer that compresses and rebounds quickly, giving a slightly foam like squish without the dense, slow sink feeling. It is also cheaper to produce than a thick block of quality gel foam, which you can sense when you lie on it, but it does keep the overall price of the mattress more accessible.
The whole mattress is finished in a polyester cover and measures 27.5 cm deep, so it will look substantial on most bed frames without being so tall that standard fitted sheets become a struggle. It is a single sided, non turn design, so you only need to rotate it regularly rather than flipping it, which is helped by the relatively modest weights, around 37.5 kg for a king size. Sizes run from single through to super king, so it will suit most UK bedrooms and bed frames.
Silentnight is also leaning into sustainability here. The mattress is made with around 60% recycled materials and is marketed as 100% recyclable at end of life, and as a brand Silentnight is carbon neutral and working towards net zero by 2040. Furniture Village also includes a 20 year structural guarantee, which is unusually long at this price point, although this covers structural faults rather than comfort changes over time.
Firmness & feel
This is sold as a firm mattress and it feels that way immediately. Lying on my back in store, I sat fairly high on the surface rather than sinking in. My lumbar area felt supported and there was no obvious hammock effect, which is what you want from a firmer pocket sprung mattress. The ActiveBreathe layer adds a touch of surface cushioning so it is not rock hard, but the overall character is definitely on the supportive, no nonsense side rather than plush and enveloping.
On my side I could feel the pressure more clearly through the shoulder and hip than on softer hybrids, especially those with a deeper foam or gel layer. If you are a lightweight side sleeper or prefer that marshmallow, hugged sensation, this is unlikely to be your favourite. For average weight and heavier sleepers who like a firm bed, I think it will feel reassuringly supportive once it has had a few weeks to settle and soften slightly.
Stomach and combination sleepers are better served here. On my front my hips did not drop dramatically, which is often the problem on softer mattresses, and rolling across the surface felt easy because the comfort layer responds quickly. There is none of the slow motion sink you get with traditional memory foam, so you never feel stuck in one position.
Performance & support
The Revitalise Refresh 800 is clearly tuned for supportive, even weight distribution rather than deep cushioning. The zoned Mirapocket springs help keep the spine aligned by giving a bit more pushback where you are heaviest and allowing a touch more give at the shoulders and legs. If you often wake with a sore lower back from softer mattresses, a construction like this can make a noticeable difference.
Motion transfer is reasonably well controlled for a budget to mid range pocket sprung mattress. Because the coils are individually wrapped and there is no bouncy foam on top, movements are softened before they travel across the bed. You can still feel a partner getting in and out or rolling vigorously, but in my store test it felt more muted than an open coil or very springy traditional mattress. It is not as dead to movement as an all foam design, so you will want to decide how sensitive you are to disturbance.
Edge support felt decent rather than exceptional. Sitting right on the side, there was some compression, but I did not feel like I was about to slide off. Lying close to the edge felt secure enough for everyday use. If you routinely sit on the edge to get dressed or share the bed with someone who pushes right out to the sides, this is something to bear in mind, but for the price point it is acceptable.
Temperature regulation
Silentnight's big claim is that ActiveBreathe feels like memory foam but is up to ten times more breathable, and in principle that makes sense. Because the comfort layer is fibre based rather than a solid block of foam, there are more air channels for heat and moisture to dissipate. That, paired with the airflow around pocket springs, gives this mattress a naturally cooler profile than dense memory foam or certain gel foams that can still trap warmth.
In reality, it feels like a standard to slightly cooler pocket sprung mattress with synthetic fillings. I did not get that instant warmth or heat build up you can feel with classic visco foam even in a showroom, which is a positive if you sleep hot. However, if you are expecting the luxurious squish of high quality gel foam combined with a dramatically cooler feel, you may find ActiveBreathe a little underwhelming. It is more of a sensible, breathable alternative than a game changing cooling layer.
Practical features
This is a low maintenance mattress. It does not need turning, only rotating occasionally to help the fillings settle more evenly, which is a relief if you are handling a king or super king size. As with most mattresses today, you are advised to air it for a few hours when it arrives, allow the springs to settle, and expect some minor body impressions as the fillings compress in the first months.
Silentnight specifies that if you are using a slatted bed frame, the gaps between slats should be no wider than 7.5 cm. That is important, because wider gaps can cause the mattress to dip between slats and can void the guarantee. A good mattress protector is strongly recommended, partly to protect your investment and partly because it makes warranty claims much simpler if you ever need them.
In terms of value, the Revitalise Refresh 800 often appears in promotions. At the time of checking, Furniture Village was advertising significant savings, with a king size reduced from its higher list price to a mid £400s Black Friday deal, with smaller sizes a little less. That pricing, combined with the 20 year structural guarantee and eco credentials, makes it a compelling proposition if you are working to a sensible budget rather than chasing luxury finishes.
Who it suits
Back and stomach sleepers who like a firm feel. The Mirapocket springs and firmer comfort profile keep the spine nicely aligned and prevent the hips from dipping too far, which is exactly what many back care advisors suggest for these sleeping positions.
Hot sleepers who dislike traditional memory foam. If you have tried classic visco foam mattresses and found them too warm or too enveloping, the ActiveBreathe layer offers a more breathable, responsive alternative without going fully back to a basic sprung feel.
Shoppers who want decent eco credentials on a budget. The use of recycled materials and the fully recyclable design will appeal if you are trying to buy more thoughtfully but are not ready to spend premium organic or natural fibre money.
Guest rooms and rental properties. The firm feel, sensible construction and straightforward maintenance make this a practical choice for a spare room, especially when bought on a good promotion.
Who it does not suit
Side sleepers who want deep pressure relief. If you are primarily a side sleeper, especially if you are lighter in build or have sensitive shoulders and hips, you may find this mattress too firm and a little unforgiving over long nights. A softer or medium mattress with a thicker foam or pillow top will likely feel more comfortable.
Anyone expecting a true gel foam experience. ActiveBreathe is marketed as a memory foam alternative but it does not replicate the slow sink, contouring hug of quality gel or visco foams. If that cocooned feel is important to you, you may feel this is a cost saving substitute rather than a like-for-like replacement.
Heavier sleepers who want extra longevity. While 800 pocket springs is perfectly respectable at this price, heavier individuals or couples may be better off with a higher spring count mattress from the same Silentnight Revitalise range for additional support and durability over the long term.
Natural fibre purists. The comfort layers and cover are polyester based. If you prefer wool, cotton and other natural fibres next to the skin, this will not tick that box.
Final verdict
The Silentnight Revitalise Refresh 800 mattress is a solid, firmly supportive pocket sprung option that offers good value when discounted, but it is important to be clear about what it is and what it is not. It is not a plush, luxury hybrid with thick gel foam, and the ActiveBreathe layer, while more breathable and responsive, does feel like a simpler, more budget friendly way of nodding to the memory foam trend without the cost or heat.
Where it does score highly is in straightforward support, cooler sleeping compared to dense foam, low maintenance care and an appealing sustainability story. If you like a firmer feel, sleep hot, and want a no fuss mattress from a big UK brand at a reasonable price, this is a very sensible contender. If you are chasing that weightless, cloud like memory foam hug, or you need very soft pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, I would treat this as a starting point in the showroom rather than your final stop.
