Why our sleep experts loved it
When I tested the Sleep Story Memory Hybrid Mattress in store at Furniture Village, I came away with two clear thoughts. It feels genuinely comfortable for the money you might pay on promotion. And at full price, I think it asks for a bit too much given what you actually get. This is one of those mattresses that makes a strong first impression, especially if you like a medium feel with that familiar memory foam “hug”, but it also raises a few practical questions once you look beyond the initial showroom wow factor.
Design and features
This is a straightforward hybrid build. Pocket springs underneath, memory foam on top, wrapped in a chemical-free polyester cover. It is made in the UK by Highgrove and exclusive to Furniture Village, which will appeal if you like the reassurance of UK manufacture and want something you can try in person rather than taking a punt online.
In king size you get 1400 pocket springs, which is a solid number for pressure relief and for reducing partner disturbance. In store, when I shifted my weight and changed position, the surface settled quickly and the movement didn’t travel much. That is exactly what you want from pocket springs. The mattress is 25.5 cm deep, so it looks properly substantial on a bed frame and doesn’t have that thin, budget profile.
I do want to flag something though. The listed fillings read oddly, with figures that don’t quite align with the overall depth, so I would treat the exact internal measurements with a bit of scepticism and focus more on the overall feel and the presence of a memory foam comfort layer plus a firmer reflex style layer for structure. What matters is that it is a hybrid that aims for comfort first, support second, and it mostly delivers that in store.
Mattress comfort
This is a medium mattress, but it leans towards the plusher side of medium. When I lay on it in store, the memory foam gave a noticeable cushioning effect around the shoulder and hip. That contouring is the main comfort story here, it helps take the edge off pressure points and gives you a calmer, more settled feeling when you stop fidgeting.
But memory foam is memory foam. If you naturally sleep warm, I’d be cautious. In a cool showroom it feels cosy and inviting, yet it still has that gentle heat holding character that some people love and others can’t stand. If you are the sort of sleeper who flips the pillow to find the cold side, you should take a beat before committing. A breathable protector and decent cotton bedding can help, but they won’t fully change how memory foam behaves.
Support is decent, largely because pocket springs are still the best mainstream support core for most households. They compress independently, so you get a more tailored response than old open coil units. There is also a slightly firmer underlayer feel that stops you sinking endlessly. Still, the overall sensation is more cushioned than crisp. If you want a really buoyant, lifted surface, this is probably not your mattress.
Suitability
This is at its best for side sleepers, full stop. The medium tension plus the memory foam contouring is a very friendly combination for shoulders and hips, and in store it did a better job on my side than it did when I switched to my back. Back sleepers can absolutely sleep on it, especially if you are average weight and prefer a little give, but if you are chasing very steady lumbar support and a flatter posture, I think a slightly firmer hybrid would be the smarter buy.
For combination sleepers who roll between side and back, it is workable, although memory foam does slightly slow down movement. You can feel that gentle hold as you change position. It is not dramatic, but it is there. Couples should like it. The pocket springs make it calmer when one person gets in and out of bed, and that is reflected in the customer feedback too. If one of you is a light sleeper, this mattress makes a strong case for itself.
Also pay attention to the base. If you are using a slatted frame, keep the slat gaps within 7.5 cm. If you ignore that, you risk excess dipping and you may end up with comfort complaints that are really base issues. And although the mattress does not require turning, rotating it regularly is still sensible, especially in the first few months when the comfort layers settle.
What customers thought
The most consistent theme I see in customer comments is stability and reduced disturbance. One buyer described it as strong and firm, and said they do not disturb each other when getting out of bed. That lines up with what I felt in store. The spring unit isolates movement well, and the top feels secure rather than flimsy. I also note they called it their second hybrid and said hybrids are worth every penny. That tells me this mattress is attracting people who already understand the hybrid concept and want that familiar blend of support and cushioning.
That said, customer reviews can skew towards the early honeymoon period, when anything new feels amazing compared to a tired old mattress. It is worth remembering that my testing was in store only, so while I can speak confidently about the initial feel, edge support, and general build quality, I cannot claim how it performs after months of nightly use. Foam can soften over time, and that matters most for people who need a firmer, more consistent surface.
The verdict
I like the idea of this mattress more than I like the full price. The combination of 1400 pocket springs and a memory foam comfort layer is a proven formula, and in theory it should be a home run for a lot of sleepers. In practice, it delivers a comfortable, side sleeper friendly medium feel with good motion isolation. It is a pleasant mattress to lie on, and for many households it will feel like an upgrade immediately.
But I can’t ignore the value question. At full price, I think it is a touch expensive for what it is, especially when the wider market is packed with competitive hybrids offering stronger cooling features or more premium covers at similar money. If you catch it in a proper sale, my opinion changes quickly. On promotion it becomes a very compelling buy, and a sensible way to get a dependable hybrid from a big retailer with the benefit of in store testing.
If you are a side sleeper who wants cushioning comfort, sleeps fairly neutral in temperature, and you want less partner disturbance, this is a strong choice if the price is right. If you sleep hot, need firmer back support, or you are paying top end pricing, I would keep shopping and compare before you commit.
