Why our sleep experts loved it
The Loxford Maxi Store Ottoman Bed Frame came across better in the showroom than many low-cost ottomans I have handled. Its price is doing a lot of the selling, of course, and I would not pretend the design is adventurous. Even so, the display model did not give me the usual budget-bed worries: flimsy-feeling fabric, a wobbly lift, or a headboard that looks tired before anyone has slept on it.
The bed did feel a touch higher than several neighbouring frames once I lay on it. Some of that was almost certainly the mattress fitted to the shop model, yet the deep storage base plays its part. Shorter buyers should try the height in person rather than relying on photos, especially with a thick mattress.
How it looked on the shop floor
The rounded headboard is a sensible piece of design. It stops the Loxford looking too square and heavy, while the horizontal stitched detail adds just enough shape. Bensons calls it suitable for any home décor, and that stretches the point. It is more accurate to say it will sit quietly in many modern bedrooms, provided velvet is already your sort of finish.
Only 2 plush velvet fabrics are offered: navy and grey. The grey looked like the easier everyday choice and will probably outsell the navy. Navy had more depth under the showroom lights, although it needs a more deliberate room scheme and will be less forgiving with lint. The fabric itself felt good for the money. I pressed and brushed the surface, and it had a soft pile rather than the flat, cheap feel sometimes found on entry-level upholstered frames.
Next to the Dreams Wilson Upholstered Ottoman Bed Frame, the Loxford feels more basic in choice and styling. The Bensons bed answers back with value and a cleaner, less fussy outline. Fair trade-off for a spare room or a main bedroom on a tighter budget.
Opening the ottoman and checking the base
The main reason to buy this frame is the deep end-lift ottoman. Bensons says it gives 60% more storage space than a standard bed frame, and while I could not measure the internal cavity in store, the open base looked properly useful. Spare bedding and bulky winter items would have a much better chance here than in a shallow drawer base.
The lift action on the showroom sample was smooth. No graunching sound, no obvious twist through the frame as it opened. Showroom testing is kinder than home use, mind you. A heavy mattress, a duvet left in place and daily lifting will ask more of the gas struts over time. End-lift storage also needs clear space at the foot, so a cramped bedroom may make access more of a shuffle than the product page suggests.
The sprung slatted base is a good inclusion at this level. It should give the mattress a little flex and allow better ventilation than a solid platform. The word “superior” in the specification feels optimistic, since mattress quality will still dominate comfort. Anyone pairing this with a very heavy mattress should check the guidance before buying.
Who I think it suits
This is best for buyers who want storage capacity first and decorative choice second. The 5 year guarantee helps the case for it, particularly at a lower price point, although it cannot prove how the mechanism will behave after repeated use. No magic here, just a decent-looking ottoman that seems priced keenly.
The raised feel deserves a proper test sit. Taller users may like it. People who prefer a lower bed, or anyone with mobility concerns, may find the finished height a nuisance once their own mattress is on top. I noticed it most when sitting on the edge rather than lying flat.
Customer feedback supplied
No customer reviews were included with the information I was given, so I cannot compare my showroom notes with owner reports. For an ottoman bed, that leaves a gap. Long-term comments often reveal whether the hinge action stays smooth, whether the gas struts weaken, and whether velvet starts to mark in everyday use. My view here comes from hands-on inspection in store, not a home trial.
Limits of this assessment
I could not test the ottoman mechanism after months of daily lifting.
I could not judge how the plush velvet copes with sunlight, pet hair or repeated cleaning.
I could not assess frame noise after long use with a sleeper turning at night.
I did not experience delivery, self-assembly or Bensons’ expert assembly service.
My view after trying it
The Loxford Maxi Store Ottoman Bed Frame is easy to understand: 2 colours, plush velvet, rounded stitched headboard, sprung slats and a deep end-lift store. Limited, yes, especially on colour. Still, ottomans rarely get much cheaper without obvious compromises, and I did not find anything problematic on the shop model. I would pick grey, check the bed height with the mattress you plan to use, and treat the storage as the main win.
