What our reviewers found

Pros

  • The only soft to medium bed in this range, and the three firmer rungs have nothing like it for a lighter side sleeper.
  • Two foam comfort layers, the lower one cut into five zones, against the single layer on the two cheapest rungs.
  • At 30cm it is the deepest of the four, if a tall bed is what you want in the room.
  • Dreams lists it as compatible with its own Sleepmotion adjustable bases.

Cons

  • A thick slab of plain base foam sits inside the 30cm and no layer in the build carries a published thickness.
  • The one rung with no rolled version, so there is no quick way to get hold of it.
  • The sprung half is one micro-spring layer, with no full height springs and no count to check.
  • The Deluxe Ice, from the same brand in the same shop, costs less and goes 2cm deeper.

The Juniper takes your shoulder and your hip further in than anything else in this range, and then a sheet of tiny springs under all that foam stops the lot. At 30cm it is the deepest of the four new Hyde & Sleep beds at Dreams, the softest graded, and the dearest.

Side sleepers are who it's built for, and the lighter you are the more sense that makes. Avoid it if you weigh more than average, or if you want to be asleep on a new mattress soon. I wouldn't buy it. My gripe with this brand is beds that come out too firm and cost a notch more than they're worth. The Juniper fixes the firmness and leaves the money where it was. Buy the Hyde & Sleep Deluxe Ice instead: less money, 2cm more mattress.

Nobody gives you a thickness for any of that 30cm

The order goes knitted cover, a temperature-adaptive Serene foam, a second Serene foam cut into five zones, one sheet of micro pocket springs, then a thick slab of plain foam. Not one of those layers has a thickness against it. The slab is what I'd want measured, because depth is the cheapest thing to add to a mattress and that is where the cheap centimetres go.

The sprung half of this hybrid is that micro-spring sheet, with no full height springs in it, so don't read hybrid here as the pocket sprung bed the word suggests. Micro springs are a comfort layer wearing a spring's name, to my mind, and they won't hold a hip up like a proper pocket unit. The five zones only work if your body lands where they were drawn.

Nothing claims a thing for the edges, and Hyde & Sleep's own instructions tell you to keep off them. A soft edge shrinks a double towards a small double. The person I share a bed with turns over half the night and takes the duvet along every time, so I spend a fair part of the night hanging off the side.

Soft to medium is the only thing it has over the cheaper rungs

That grade is the one honest reason to pay up here: the other three run from medium to very firm, so a soft bed is the thing you can't buy cheaper in the range. There's no firmer or softer Juniper either, so you live with the grade you order.

Dreams advertises contouring memory foam in it and that memory foam is not in the build, so ask about it before you order if that's why you're here. Being without it is no loss. Memory foam traps heat whatever the cover above it is called, and this foam is sold on recovering faster than memory foam.

The one rung in the range you cannot have in a box

Every other bed here comes rolled and this one doesn't, so ordering it means a long wait and no way round it. That alone would stop me. A mattress you're unsure of is one you want underneath you quickly, and this one asks you to commit to an untried feel and then wait.

Check how deep your fitted sheets are cut before you order, because 30cm is where ordinary sheets give up and a deep set adds to the priciest bed here.

Turn it end over end every week for its first three months and monthly from then on, because there is one sleeping side and that is the only evening out of the dips you'll get. Choose the grade carefully first time, too: Dreams' 100-Night Comfort Guarantee swaps the mattress for another instead of refunding you.

What to buy instead

Buy the Deluxe Ice. Same brand, same shop, less money, 2cm more depth at 32cm, and memory foam that's in the name. It's graded medium, which suits more bodies and is the grade I'd put most people on first.

If it's this new Serene build you're after and a medium feel will do, the Hyde & Sleep Lime Rolled is the medium of this range: 27cm, the same spring sheet, three zones in place of five, and it arrives rolled.

Suitability

  • Back Sleepers 3.5/5
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers 4/5
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers 3/5
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability 3.5/5
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress 3.5/5
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability 3.5/5
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Odour

  • Initial Odour 4/5
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour 5/5
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

Brand Rating

  • Overall Brand Rating 4.5/5
  • This is based on community driven customer reviews tied to product reviews and grouped together at a brand level to produce a score.

Questions and answers about the Hyde & Sleep Juniper Hybrid Serene® Foam Mattress

Common questions answered by our team first, then questions shoppers asked the retailer, with the retailer’s own answers.

Common question
Is the Juniper soft enough for a side sleeper?

Answer: Yes, as long as you're on the light side. Dreams grades it soft to medium, the softest in this range, and there are two foam comfort layers above the springs, so your shoulder and your hip go in before anything firm arrives. A heavier side sleeper will press through that foam and find that thin spring sheet under it, which isn't much to come to rest on.

Common question
Do the five support zones do anything?

Answer: They can, where your body lines up with them. The zones are cut into the lower foam layer and not into the springs, and they are set for one spacing of neck, shoulder, back, hip and leg. Be tall or short of that spacing and the shoulder zone sits under your ribs. Zoning is worth little on its own, so don't pay up for this rung because of it.

Common question
Should I buy the Juniper or the Deluxe Ice?

Answer: The Deluxe Ice, for most people. Same brand, same shop, less money, 32cm against this one's 30cm, five layers, and memory foam in the name of it. It's graded medium, a feel more bodies get on with than soft to medium. Buy the Juniper only if you have already decided that a soft bed is the thing you want.
