Welcome to my carefully detailed review of the Emma Original Pro Mattress 2025 (previously sold as the Emma® NextGen Cooling Hybrid Mattress, the name it carried at the time of this review), a clever sleep solution aimed at providing optimum comfort and temperature regulation. Having spent a significant amount of time in the mattress industry, I've had the pleasure of testing a wide array of mattresses, and I'm therefore excited to share my insights on this particular model.
How we assessed it
My approach to mattress review involves several critical steps, beginning with a thorough examination of the mattress's construction and the materials used. I scrutinise the product's specifications and look into the individual layers of the mattress, examining how each component functions and how it contributes to the overall sleep experience. Lastly, I consider the overall design, including the mattress cover's aesthetics and practicality. This one has pocket springs zoned in seven areas and encased in HRX foam, with Halo Memory Foam and the graphite-infused ThermoSync™ foam on the comfort side, 27cm deep in all. I'd expect that much foam over springs to feel softer than the medium label suggests, and a good number of owners say it does.
Design and Features
The Emma Original Pro has an array of impressive features, starting with its Vegan-friendly credentials and an NBF-approved manufacturer. One standout feature is its 7-zone pocket spring support system, designed for targeted support and pressure relief. This system provides tailored support for various body parts, ensuring a comfortable resting surface regardless of sleeping position.
Matching its top-notch support system are layers of clever, breathable ThermoSync™ foam that not only adapts to your body shape but also manages temperature exceptionally well. Infused with graphite particles known for capturing and dissipating heat, this ThermoSync layer helps you achieve the dream of cool, uninterrupted sleep.
The mattress possesses an Emma UltraDry™ cover which wicks away moisture, keeping you fresh throughout the night and easily cleanable since it's machine-washable. Other worth mentioning features include its fire-resistant properties, hypoallergenic qualities, and a solid array of awards recognising its exceptional performance in the sleep industry.
Mattress comfort
As subjective as comfort can be, the Emma Original Pro does an excellent job of catering to a broad range of sleep preferences. On paper the medium tension should suit back and side sleepers, because the zoned pocket springs do the supporting while the memory foam lets a shoulder or hip sink in, and side sleepers among the owners agree: one couple wrote that it "moulds to your shape better especially as we're both side sleepers." Having said that, those who primarily sleep on their back may opt for a slightly firmer mattress for even greater support.
Suitability
The mattress is perhaps best-suited to average-weight individuals, regardless of sleeping position. The tailored support of the 7-zone pocket spring system is excellent at contouring and responding to the body without causing undue pressure points. However, my feelings are mixed, almost reminiscent of a nostalgic longing for the Luxe model it replaces, which had superior materials and a feel I personally preferred. However that's not to discount the Emma Original Pro, it's still a good mattress, just not as good as its predecessor in my opinion.
What customers thought
Customer reviews are key in providing a multi-faceted view of the product. Most owners are happy with it. Comfort and support come up again and again, and one wrote that it was the "best night sleep i've had for a long time." Another called it "snuggly and comfy due to the top layer but still firm and supportive." The cooling splits opinion. Some find it "cool and comfortable"; for others it was not: "The memory foam did feel a bit too warm in the summer." The commonest complaint is softness, with a weak edge alongside it. "Too soft and too little edge support", as one owner put it, and another found that "if you sit on the edge of the bed the side collapses." A few king-size buyers also found it narrower than their base. One said it was "3 cm less than a Kingsize should be." One more thing before you order: the comfort trial is an exchange, not a refund, and one owner only found that out when they wanted to send it back. I'd put the mixed reports on cooling down to the memory foam, which sleeps warm for some people whatever is infused into it, and the soft edge fits with several owners saying they can feel the springs at the sides.
The verdict
The Emma Original Pro is an exceptional mattress that delivers on both comfort and temperature regulation. Offering medium firmness, it strikes an admirable balance between support and plush comfort. However, the shadow of its predecessor looms large, and while this new version is more affordable, those who have experienced the old version might miss its luxurious feel. Still, it's a mattress that provides value for money and would be a fine choice for anyone seeking a cooling hybrid mattress that doesn't compromise comfort.
