Why our sleep experts loved it
Westby is a modern and comfortable bed frame that offers the convenience of twin side storage drawers. Available in either grey or navy velvet, it has a calm, tailored look that feels luxurious without being overly flashy. I was pleased after building and sleeping on it for several weeks that, as upholstered frames in this price range go, it is one of the more well balanced in terms of comfort, stability and genuinely usable storage day to day.
I built the navy version in my own room and lived with it properly, not just a quick sit down. Straight away, running my hand across the velvet and the stitched headboard, it felt softer than I expected for the money, but not flimsy.
Design & First Impressions
The Westby looks smart and inviting. The vertically stitched headboard adds shape and height while the gentle curves along the edges soften the overall look. The velvet finish catches the light well and gives the piece a sense of depth. The navy feels rich and dramatic, the grey looks cool and understated. The matching foot end gives it symmetry and weight while the slim legs prevent the profile from feeling too bulky. Everything about the design feels considered and well proportioned with enough presence to anchor a bedroom without dominating it.
One thing I will say, velvet shows pressure marks and brush strokes in certain light, especially on the navy. It is not a deal breaker, but if you like everything looking perfectly uniform all the time, you will notice it.
Assembly Experience
Assembly is clear and straightforward. Parts are well packaged and clearly labelled and instructions are easy to follow. Two people can build it in under two hours. The slatted base clips together neatly and the drawers slot into place once the frame is secure. It is worth taking the time to align the drawer runners correctly in order to keep the glide smooth. Once built the bed feels solid and stable with no creaking or movement and all panels fitting flush. The whole process feels deliberate and well engineered rather than rushed or overly fiddly.
I built it with one other person and the only bit that slowed us down was getting both drawer runners sitting perfectly level. If you rush that step, the drawers still work, but you can feel a slight scrape and it takes away from the 'premium' feel.
Build Quality & Materials
The overall quality feels strong for a frame in this range. The velvet is soft but durable and holds its colour well, the headboard padding is firm enough to lean against comfortably and the stitching is tight and straight. The sprung slats have a nice flexibility that supports the mattress evenly while the frame itself feels rigid once tightened. The drawers glide quietly and have smooth edges with enough internal space for practical use. It is clear that the frame has been built for everyday life rather than just showroom appeal.
Pressing down on the slats by hand before the mattress went on, you can feel that spring in them, which is great for comfort, but it does mean your mattress feel can soften a touch compared to a solid base. If you already have a softer mattress and you want it to feel firmer, this style of base might not be your favourite.
I also missed having proper carry handles on the base for moving it around once built. You can still shift it, but you end up grabbing the upholstery, and long term that is where scuffs and pulls tend to happen.
Comfort & Stability
Once in place the Westby feels reassuringly steady. The sprung slats add a small amount of give which works well with most mattresses and helps to keep the feel consistent across the bed. Sitting on the edge or leaning against the headboard feels secure with no flex in the joints. The height is well judged, comfortable to climb into and suitable for deeper mattresses. The combination of padded headboard and soft velvet finish gives the bed a genuinely inviting quality that makes it easy to relax into.
In real use, I sat on the edge to put socks on most mornings and it stayed planted, no wobble, no annoying squeaks. Lying back to read, the headboard padding felt supportive rather than sinky, but if you like a really plush headboard you can melt into, this one is on the firmer side.
The slim legs help the look, but they do mean you get a bit less under-bed clearance than some frames, so if you were hoping to slide extra boxes underneath as well as using the drawers, it is a bit limiting.
Storage Functionality
The two side drawers are a standout feature. Centrally positioned for easy reach they slide out smoothly on their runners and each one is large enough to store spare bedding or folded clothes. They are also deep enough to be practical rather than decorative. Drawers feel balanced even when full and the movement remains quiet. Because they are side mounted this design works best in rooms where there is enough space around the bed but for anyone who wants accessible storage without lifting the mattress this is the ticket.
I loaded one drawer with a spare duvet and pillows and the other with jumpers, and they still rolled in and out without that horrible judder you get on cheaper drawer beds. The trade-off is obvious though, if you have a bedside table tight to the frame, you will be shuffling furniture every time you want to get in there.
Everyday Use
After several weeks of use the frame still feels tight and silent. The drawers open and close smoothly and the upholstery has held its texture. The velvet needs an occasional brush or vacuum to stay looking sharp but that is to be expected. It pairs nicely with a medium deep mattress keeping the overall profile visually balanced between headboard and base. The bed adds a gentle touch of luxury without demanding attention. It has the same calm, well made presence that the best upholstered furniture has where everything feels quietly right.
Who It Suits
The Westby is ideal for anyone who wants a comfortable modern bed with a clean shape and practical storage. It suits medium or larger rooms where the drawers can open fully and works well for couples who value both style and functionality. The velvet finish brings warmth to contemporary spaces and softens minimalist ones making it a versatile choice for many homes.
Who It Doesn't Suit
If you are short on space at the sides of your bed the drawers will be harder to access. It is also not the right choice if you prefer a wood or metal frame or if you want maximum storage space that only an ottoman design can offer. The velvet, though durable, will need light upkeep to prevent marks. For those reasons it suits users who appreciate design and comfort over pure utility.
Verdict
Westby Side Drawer Bed Frame delivers real value through a combination of design, comfort and function. It is easy to build, solid once in place and comfortable to use. The twin drawers add useful storage without spoiling the look and the overall quality feels strong for the price. The velvet finish and stitched headboard add enough character to lift a room while still keeping it timeless. If you want a reliable stylish upholstered bed that looks and feels more expensive than it is the Westby is an excellent choice.
For me personally, it sits in the 'good value, easy to live with' bracket because it nails the basics and the drawers are genuinely handy. Just go in knowing the velvet needs a bit of upkeep, the drawer access demands space, and the sprung slats can soften the feel of a mattress slightly.
