Good mattress, awkward rung. The Signature II is a well-made bed for back and front sleepers who will keep it turned, and the step up it represents is the weakest one in the range. Staples is a maker I like, and the pricing of this one rung annoying me doesn't change that.
The rung below it is the better buy of the two
Take the Signature I first, because the gap between the two of them is the only question worth asking here. Going up gets you 1,000 more mini springs, 2cm more depth at 33cm against 31cm, and two more fibres in the mix, needled wool and Lyocell. The cover is the same. The guarantee is the same length. Both have two rows of true hand side-stitching and both are hand-tufted with British wool.
So here is my problem. The part of this bed that holds you up is 1,200 full-height pocket springs, and the 7,000 minis above them are there to soften the top. The headline count went up by a thousand springs and the layer under your hips didn't move a millimetre. Pay more and I want the supporting layer to grow, not the padding, and that's why I can't send you up this particular step with a straight face.
What the money does get you is a bed built to last
None of that makes it a bad mattress. You can turn this one, which already puts it ahead of the other Staples ranges Bensons sells, all of them no-turn. No-turn is a cost saving the trade learned to present as a convenience, and a bed with two usable faces will outlive one with a single face taking every night of its life.
The cover is a Belgian damask, viscose blended with Lyocell, and the fire retardancy is M-Pure, which the spec calls natural and chemical free. It's made in the UK, in Bensons' own factory at Huntingdon, which holds the Furniture Makers Manufacturing Guild Mark and the BSI Kitemark. No owners have reviewed it yet, so those are the things I'm weighing.
33cm is where sheets and bed height start to matter
Measure two things before you order this one. Measure the pocket depth on your fitted sheets, because 33cm is past the point where a sheet sold as deep will definitely cope. Then work out how high the finished bed lands, your base plus 33cm, measured off the carpet. Sit on that edge in your head and check your feet reach the floor flat.
Turning it is a two-person job and the handles don't change that. My other half gets volunteered for this sort of thing in our house. Avoid this rung if you change the bed alone and already find a mattress corner heavy, if your bed is a climb as it stands, or if you're a lighter side sleeper, because Medium is as soft as this one goes.
What to buy instead
Two answers, and they point the same way. Inside the range, drop down to the Signature I: you keep the wool, the tufting, the turnable build and the same supporting springs, and you stop paying for padding. Outside it, I'd have the Hypnos Luxurious Earth 02 on the list at the same shop, because Hypnos is the maker I trust most in Bensons stores. Get both quoted in your size before you commit either way.
