Why our sleep experts loved it
The Staples & Co Artisan Pure Opulence Mattress is another in the “do everything really well but see costs respective of this fact” category of luxury mattresses with strong support, an uber-plush pillowtop surface, natural fibres and a pocket spring count that is frankly impressive. In store (especially in the Medium comfort) what I noticed straight away is that it still leans firmer for Medium (just about this side of neutral overall), but in a very controlled, supportive way, not at all a board-like feel.
If you’re the type who loves a luxe top but never feels properly cradled by soft, slow responding foam, this is very much a mattress aimed squarely at you. For me the drawbacks are the cost and the very real delivery lag that higher end, made-to-order style mattresses often have (depending on postcode and availability).
Construction & Materials A tall mattress at 34cm , so it looks and feels hefty even before you get on it.
The headline feature is the 6000 dual-layer pocket spring system made up of 5000 mini pocket springs plus a lower layer of 1000 full height pocket springs . In real terms what that gives you is a much more finely tuned contour from the minis at the top, with more supportive (i.e. deeper and more structural) underlayer.
On top there is an ultra-deep tufted pillowtop . I am not the biggest pillowtop fan long-term because the loftier, extra cushioned tops can settle most unevenly over the years, unless you are super strict with rotation. That said, it is the instant-comfort-star is undeniably indulgent here, and the tufting does help keep the surface layers more locked in place than a softer, cloudier topper design.
Material-wise, this is where you are paying for the Pure Opulence branding in big ways. The fillings include bamboo (renewably sourced), Tencel fibres, GOTS-approved organic fibres, cotton, flax, Wools of New Zealand wool, UK alpaca wool, as well as an all-seasons wool comfort layer. The cover is described as Belgian damask with M-Pure (natural, chemical-free) fire retardancy.
Firmness & Feel You can get it in Medium , Firm or Extra Firm .
Medium in store felt noticeably firm for the name, but again it was a supportive firmness and there is a cushioned top rather than an unyielding surface. Pillowtop gives you that initial plushiness when you first lie down, then the spring system quickly pushes back, so you are definitely held up rather than swallowed.
If you are moving from a soft or medium hybrid, or a mattress with thick memory foam, you will need an adjustment period to the feeling. The comfort level is much more about buoyant, responsive support and alignment, rather than the deep, hugging sensation.
Performance & Support The thing that makes this mattress feel so competent is of course the spring count and layering strategy. Mini springs right by the surface adapting close to the skin, and full-height springs under that should do a really good job of contouring around curves, without encouraging your spine to bow.
I also like that this has reinforced edge support because in real-world use it makes the whole thing feel more stable if you get in to sit up and put socks on, or use the full width without feeling like you are going to roll right off the edge.
The dips and disturbs from a partner are also likely to be reasonably well managed for a pocket spring mattress like this. Pocket springs move independently, so the overall effect tends to be that less ripple is felt across the surface when someone else turns and wriggles around.
Temperature Regulation Oddly, for a mattress with an ultra-deep pillowtop, I was surprisingly impressed with how cooling it felt in store. One of the big reasons is the choice of fibres that are both breathable and moisture managing (bamboo, flax, wool and Tencel) rather than foams which trap heat, but also the natural airflow you just get through a pocket spring build.
If you struggle with overheating on foam-heavy mattresses, then this sort of build can feel much fresher all through the night, especially in summer, without turning the surface into something slippery or too bouncy.
Practical Features An easy-care, no-turn mattress , which is how I describe them here, you rotate rather than flip.
You also get a free 10-year guarantee and it is made in the UK . The brand positioning a lot of their sales pitch around high quality manufacturing standards and accreditation.
For reassurance and getting it through the door, there is the 40 Night Comfort Guarantee with conditions. Delivery pricing can get on the steep side for higher cost items (a king mattress is more an investment purchase than a weekly shop replacement).
One other practical point to note: at 34cm deep you will want to double check fitted sheet depth for any you have already, or whether your bed frame headboard height will still look visually balanced.
Who It Suits This mattress is a strong match if:
You love a luxe feel, but with actual structure underneath rather than a soft, sink-in profile. You like a firmer Medium, or you know you prefer Firm or Extra Firm already. You are a warmer sleeper and want something more naturally breathable and less foam heavy. You need edge support for using the full mattress without feeling like you are going to roll off. You can justify the higher cost for premium components and made-in-the-UK positioning. Who It Doesn’t Suit I would think twice if:
You are after a seriously soft, sink in and pressure-melting feel (this is plush but there is still solid support going on, plus it actually quite firm under the plush surface). You dislike pillowtops or know you will not rotate regularly and that long-term settling is a concern. You are on a strict budget, because although the value may be high for the specification, the overall entry cost is out of reach for many people. Final Verdict The Staples & Co Artisan Pure Opulence Mattress is a very competently engineered and well-constructed pocket sprung mattress that justifies its luxury look and high cost with serious body-contouring support. The Medium feeling firmer than you might expect will actually be a plus for many sleepers, especially anyone who wants that held, aligned, but cushioned feel.
My real hesitations are the pillowtop from a longer-term ownership angle (glorious now but you need to be the type to rotate on instruction), and the price point, which is too high for many households even though it is clear you are paying for a high quality of component.
If you can afford it and want a breathable, supportive mattress with a genuinely premium construction then it is one of the more convincing premium options in Bensons' Staples & Co range.
