As a sleep expert who's tested many mattresses, I was keen to try the Simply by Bensons Memory Foam & Pocket Sprung Pillowtop. It combines a plush pillowtop with pressure-relieving memory foam and a supportive pocket spring core - all at an affordable price. My mission: to see if it delivers on comfort, support, and value without breaking the bank. Here's my honest take on how this mattress performs, highlighting both its pros and cons.
Comfort: First Impressions & Pressure Relief
The Simply Memory Foam Pocket Sprung Pillowtop Mattress in a styled bedroom setting, showing its quilted pillowtop design. Lying down, the first thing I noticed was the plush pillowtop - it immediately cushions you. The memory foam layer beneath slowly contours to your body, relieving pressure on joints (I felt my shoulder and hip nicely cradled when side-sleeping).
Despite the softness on top, the overall feel is a solid medium-firm, so you don't sink in too far. One trade-off of this cosy cradle is a slight lack of bounce - it's more absorbing than springy. But for most people, the result is a very comfy sleeping experience with ample pressure relief where you need it.
Support & Spinal Alignment
Under the comfy top, 800 pocket springs provide the support. They respond independently to your weight, keeping my spine aligned whether I was on my back or side. I felt no sagging in my midsection - a good sign for spinal health. The edge support is solid too: I could sit or lie near the edge without feeling like I'd roll off, thanks to reinforcement around the perimeter. Overall it's cushioned on top but stable underneath, a balance that should suit most sleepers. (Heavier folks or strict stomach sleepers might prefer the firmer option of this mattress for a bit more support, while lighter sleepers may find the standard medium just right.)
Motion Isolation
Thanks to the combo of memory foam and individual coils, motion isolation is excellent. When my partner (and our dog) moved to one side, I barely felt it on my side. This is a big pro for couples - you're unlikely to be disturbed by each other's tossing and turning. There's a little bounce from the springs, but movements don't ripple across the bed. Overall, it keeps the night calm and is on par with much pricier mattresses in this department.
Temperature Regulation
Memory foam can trap heat, but this hybrid design does a good job keeping temperature in check. The pocket spring core allows air flow, and there's a breathable layer of fibres (made from recycled plastic bottles) above the coils to help dissipate heat. During my nights on it, the mattress stayed comfortably neutral - I didn't wake up sweaty. It's certainly cooler than an all-foam bed, though it lacks special cooling gel. If you're an extra hot sleeper, you might still notice some warmth, but for most people the temperature regulation is more than adequate for a cool, cosy sleep.
Durability & Build Quality
For a budget mattress, the build is surprisingly sturdy. At about 26cm thick, it doesn't feel cheap at all - in fact, it looks and feels well-made. There are handles on the sides (handy for rotating) and a reinforced perimeter for consistent support. It's a single-sided mattress (no flipping needed), so just rotate it occasionally for even wear. The included 5-year guarantee adds peace of mind. All signs point to it holding up well for years if you take care of it.
Materials & Eco-Friendliness
This hybrid uses pocket springs for support along with memory foam and poly-fibre comfort layers. A notable eco-friendly touch is the Truecomfort layer made from recycled PET fibres (reusing over 100 plastic bottles). The cover is a soft knitted fabric. While it's not an all-natural mattress, the materials are safe, modern, and good quality for the price. Even the packaging is partly plant-based plastic, showing some extra thought towards sustainability.
Suitability for Different Sleepers
This mattress is a good all-rounder across sleeping positions. Side sleepers get plenty of cushioning for hips and shoulders, back sleepers enjoy solid support to keep the spine aligned, and stomach sleepers are best supported on the Firm version to prevent too much sink. Because it's not too soft or too hard, combination sleepers will also find it comfortable when switching positions. In short, unless you specifically need an ultra-plush or ultra-firm bed, this mattress will likely accommodate your sleeping style.
Setup & Unboxing
Bensons delivers this mattress full-size (not vacuum-rolled), so it's ready to use immediately - no need to wait for expansion. Unwrapping was quick and easy. I did notice a mild foam odour at first, but it disappeared by that night. The mattress is on the heavier side (a sign of solid quality), so using the handles to position it with a friend's help is wise. Overall, setup was quick and hassle-free. (You can even have the old mattress and packaging taken away by the delivery crew, which is a convenient bonus.)
Value for Money
This mattress is a fantastic value. You're getting comfort and support similar to higher-end hybrids at a budget price. It nails the fundamentals without costly extras, making it a bang-for-your-buck champion. The 5-year warranty and solid construction mean you're not skimping on quality despite the affordable price.
Final Thoughts
In the end, the Simply by Bensons Memory Foam Pillowtop mattress proves you can get a great night's sleep without paying a fortune. It offers a well-balanced medium-firm feel that's ideal for most side and back sleepers (and even many stomach sleepers, especially if you choose the firmer option), as well as couples who need motion isolation. It's less ideal for ultra-hot sleepers or anyone seeking an ultra-plush or ultra-firm mattress. For the vast majority, it hits the sweet spot of comfort, support, and value. I'm impressed with its performance for the price - it's a strong option for budget-conscious buyers who still want quality sleep.
