Bensons for Beds keeps its budget line under the Simply by Bensons label, and the Beam is one of the sprung mattresses in it. It is made in the UK and carries Kitemark accreditation, meaning the construction has been independently tested against a British Standard. For the cheap end of a national retailer's catalogue, the spec reads well.
The spring unit Individually encased pocket springs carry the load. Each compresses on its own, nothing around it gets dragged down, and the surface ends up following the line of your body: deeper under your hips, barely at all under your ankles. The same independence is what keeps one sleeper's tossing from reaching the other side of the bed. Open coil units, where the springs are wired together and move as a single frame, are what you usually find on the very cheapest beds. Pocket springs, on a bed costing this little, are the best argument the Beam has.
Fillings and feel Press a hand into the quilted pillowtop in a showroom and you get two stages of give, the quilting first, then the fibre beneath. Those comfort layers are recycled synthetic fibre, the future friendly and new-life yarns named on the spec, and in practice that means an airy filling with none of the dense cradle you get from foam. Bensons rate it hypoallergenic, and open fibre of this kind breathes well. The cover is knitted fabric, stretchy enough to move with the springs under it.
There is no memory foam anywhere in the build, and none of the trapped warmth that comes with it. Hot sleepers should count that as a point in its favour. Anyone chasing that sink-in feel should be shopping for a different construction altogether.
Tensions and practical details If you sleep mostly on your side, order the medium; back sleepers tend to want the firm, and the retailer's own guidance splits along the same line. Those are the only two tensions offered. Depth is 26.5cm, standard enough that ordinary sheets go on without a fight, and the perimeter is reinforced for edge support. The mattress is single sided with all the comfort material on top, so it only ever gets rotated end to end, and there are stitched-on handles to make that easier.
What owners report The negative reviews agree with each other, which tells you more than a star average would. A minority of owners describe the surface dipping early, one measuring a 45mm impression inside the first month. Fibre fillings settle with use, all of them do, and a pillowtop shows it sooner when you sleep in exactly the same spot every night. Rotate from week one; it shrinks the risk. Most of the feedback sits at the other end, though. Buyers call it comfortable and well matched to what they asked for in store, and more than one review spends as long praising showroom staff for leaving them alone to browse as it does on the mattress. Funny what people remember after a purchase.
One buyer's delivery failed outright because the mattress would not bend round their staircase. Pocket sprung units arrive at full size (no vacuum-rolled option here), so measure the route to your bedroom before you order if access is tight.
