Why our sleep experts loved it
The Silentnight 1000 Mirapocket Pillow Top Mattress is one of the more popular in a new line of budget pocket spring (known as mirapocket for these Silentnight models) mattresses from the retailer MattressNextDay.
I got my hands on this one because I keep seeing it pop up as a ‘safe’ buy for people who want pocket springs without spending a fortune, and I wanted to see if it actually feels like a Silentnight, or just a badge on a budget bed.
This mattress is great for a few reasons, firstly, it is cheap considering the premium brand and good quality components The cost of this mattress is on the low to mid range end in price but by no means a compromise on the fillings and springs included.
That said, you can tell it’s built to hit a price. It’s not the sort of mattress that’s going to give you that super-luxury, hotel-bed weight and finish, and if you’re expecting loads of ‘wow’ for the money, you might find it a bit more simple than the pillow top name suggests.
What's Inside the Silentnight 1000 Mirapocket Pillow Top Mattress? To start, you get 1000 pocket spring mattresses. Pocket springs are probably the best mattress base that you can get, contouring to your body and providing equal springy support. 1000 of them is plenty to give you the body contouring necessary to get a good nights sleep while having enough to prevent roll together and feature edge-support.
When I pressed down with my palm and then my elbow, you can feel the springs reacting in smaller sections rather than the whole surface dipping at once, which is exactly what you want from a pocket spring unit. Sitting on the edge, it held up better than a lot of budget pocket sprung mattresses, but it still compresses, so if you perch on the side to put socks on every morning, you’ll notice it more than you would on a firmer, reinforced edge model.
Motion-wise, it’s decent, but it’s not magic. If you’re a really light sleeper and your partner is a wriggler, you’ll still feel some movement through the top, just less than you would on an open coil mattress.
Further to the pocket springs, you also receive the popular Eco-Comfort layer which gives a deep and soft layer exclusive the the manufacturer that is both environmentally friendly and comfortable, being made initially from many recycled bottles. It is incredible soft and comfortable and a fan favourite for most who try it. Eager to avoid the heat build up reported on competing products, this mattress has opted for the cooling and breathable effects of the eco comfort fillings to beat the competition when it comes to heat retention and heat build up. The result is that there are some cooling properties that pair further with the durable soft touch quilted cover and pocket springs that offset heat build up further.
Running my hand across the quilted cover, it’s got that soft-touch feel you’d expect, and the pillow top gives a nicer first impression than a flat-topped budget mattress. Lying on my back, I felt nicely level through the hips, but on my side I could feel a bit of pressure building around the shoulder after a while, so if you’re a side sleeper under about 70kg, I’d be cautious with the medium tension and you might want something with a plusher comfort layer.
On the temperature side, it does a better job than a thick slab of memory foam, but it’s not an ‘ice cool’ mattress either. If you’re a proper hot sleeper, the Eco-Comfort helps, but you’ll still want to pair it with a breathable protector and decent bedding, because the pillow top does add a bit of cosy warmth.
