Why our sleep experts loved it
The Sealy Ortho Plus Bronze Mattress is a fairly new mattress from Mattress Online and Sealy and is part of a new shake-up in the range that saw all existing models removed and replaced with newer and better performing models. Sealy now aims to offer mid-high range mattresses at mid rage price points thanks to opportunities of scale combined with decades long industry knowledge. The Ortho Plus Bronze has a firmer tension offering and is double sided, both of which have their benefits that we will discuss later in this piece. Until then, let's get into the structure of this mid-range product from one of the industry leaders.
Starting with the support layer that sits at the bottom of the mattress (or in this case, the middle of the mattress since it is dual sided), this product features an PostureTech CS Spring structure. This type of support has been used for a few years now and continues to be used thanks to its mid-tier price point and great support offered. When I sat right on the edge, it held up better than I expected for this sort of spring unit, but you do still get a bit of dip compared to a proper pocket sprung edge. I will still advocate for the better-performing pocket springs that are found in the ultra-premium products but the PostureTech CS Spring featured within this mattress should not be a cause for concern.
Onto the comfort layer and it's quite a predictable story for the Sealy lineup, opting for a safe soft white fiber layer that is sufficiently deep enough to keep the springs away from your body while doing plenty to help the mattress breath through the fibers to help keep you cool. When I pressed into the top, it felt soft and a bit springy rather than sink-in, so don't expect that slow-melting memory foam feel. The result is a soft and comfortable, albeit unimpressive comfort layer that won't hug you too much allowing you to spread out and toss and turn without getting yourself stuck (as becomes the norm with deeper memory foam varieties). If you're a lighter side sleeper, the firmer tension can feel a touch pushy around the shoulder.
Overall, particularly with the 5 year guarantee, you are getting a good quality and lower than expected price point mattress that has been guaranteed for longer than the average which will give a large degree of personal comfort and peace of mind. The firm tension will suit back sleepers and stomach sleepers while the dual sided nature of the product means you get twice the surface area through rotation and flipping which will help prolong life even further. Flipping it is a genuine plus for longevity, but it is a bit of a faff and the mattress can be on the heavier side to manoeuvre. It's a great consideration and one that should be high on your list if it suits your needs.
